Case # 612JP+HCL (The case of Jake Peralta & his contact lenses)
The revelation that Jake wears contact lenses requires some investigation as to when he got them, as unfortunately it happened off screen. Here’s a possible suggestion (with help from @madeofitzits). Also, thank you to Luke Del Tredici for giving us this line…
So, in The Tagger (1.02), he sleeps overnight in the precinct and doesn’t put any contacts in when he gets up.
Then in 48hrs (1.07), unlike Amy, he doesn’t seem to have any issues with his contacts drying out. Also, if someone has their own glasses, do they really desire to do this…?
And do people who wear contacts pour soft drink in their eyes? (1.17)
He has trouble reading this sign on the door from more than about a metre away. (2.06)
However, has no trouble reading these cue cards when he’s being sabotaged by Geoffrey Hoytsman (2.19). They are reasonably close to his face, though.

And he has to stand very close to the screen to watch the feed, which could just be his stubbornness to sit on the mattress. (3.07).
Perhaps Amy had suggested he needs glasses, but specs don’t really go with his whole fun-loving, easy-going personality. Perhaps, like ties, they make him look too serious.
But then very next episode (3.08), we get to see that Jake has glasses somewhat hidden on his desk. These are obviously Andy’s real glasses, but they could also be Jake’s.
Just a few episodes later, he’s excitedly reading signs. Maybe he’s got contacts now and is enjoying his newfound 20/20 vision?
Best bet is that he got contacts sometime in season 3, maybe after Amy’s influence.
