Carl DeMaio: 48.47% (155,871 votes)

Just a quick update (since I actually have a couple of followers)! I am running through the ballot now, and if I have some time tonight I will update my Tumblr with summaries of each thing up for vote. In the meantime, I'm making heavy use of Ballotpedia, Craig and Lou, and The Darryl Johnson Show while looking over these things.
California Proposition 32, the "Paycheck Protection" Initiative (2012)
Short version - What does it do?
Prohibits unions and corporations from using payroll-deducted funds for political contributions.
Fiscal impact:
Increased costs to state and local government, potentially exceeding $1 million annually, to implement and enforce the measure's requirements.
Pro arguments:
Corporations and unions make sizable donations to politicians, which influences the way that they vote. Prohibiting these donations will allow individual voters to have more of a say.
Union members should decide for themselves where their money goes. They should not be forced into donating to a cause they may not necessarily believe in.
Con arguments:
Prop. 32 is unbalanced and will affect unions more than corporations, since corporations rarely use payroll-deducted funds for political purposes while unions rely heavily on it.
It is unconstitutional, restricting freedom of speech.
Union members can already opt-out of having their union dues used for politics.

City of San Diego mayoral debate tonight (October 23rd) at 5:30pm between Bob Filner and Carl DeMaio. You can watch it on Cox channel 114 or at UTTV.com.
Excerpts: "We typically feel that we understand how complex systems work even when our true understanding is superficial. And it is not until we are asked to explain how such a system works — whether it’s what’s involved in a trade deal with China or how a toilet flushes — that we realize how little we actually know." "That’s not much of a shocker, of course. The real surprise is what happens after these same individuals are asked to explain how these policy ideas work: they become more moderate in their political views — either in support of such policies or against them. In fact, not only do their attitudes change, but so does their behavior. In one of our experiments, for example, after attempting to explain how various policy ideas would actually work, people became less likely to donate to organizations that supported the positions they had initially favored. Interestingly, asking people to justify their position — rather than asking them to explain the mechanisms by which a policy would work — doesn’t tend to soften their political views. When we asked participants to state the reasons they were for or against a policy position, their initial attitudes held firm. (Other researchers have found much the same thing: merely discussing an issue often makes people more extreme, not less.)"
Quick Intro
With me being a chronic procrastinator and the election fast approaching, I figured I should start collecting information on the rest of the ballot since I decided ages ago where I settled as far as the presidential election goes.
I live in San Diego, CA and most of the posts will be focused on our local junk. I also happen to be Libertarian-leaning so that may color my posts slightly, but I want to be as impartial as I can be when laying out the pros and cons of each item up for my vote. Hopefully by doing this I can form as logical and educated of an opinion that I can by the time November 6th rolls around.
