Mort (8/8): Frost
Mort (7/8): The Climb
Iām on this weekās Culture Jam by Sharks Eat Meat, talking about my procedural music program, Voodoo Music Generator, as well as about my (non-procedural) songwriting process. Iām in the first part of the episode; however, I highly recommend watching part 2 as well, because it goes on to describe some of the procedural music creations that Los Coulters have been building in Minecraft (weāre talking, chicken-powered music). Wondermark has literally spent the last six weeks doing nothing but comics revolving around increasingly bizarre wordplay upon the phrase ācheck out my sick elephantā, and I think itās the most beautiful thing Iāve ever seen.
(The first comic in the⦠arc, I suppose youād call it?⦠is here, for those who wish to experience them in the intended order.)
For the benefit of the morbidly curious, the Sick Elephant arc concludes as of today. What began as a one-off gag became a three and half month saga exploring every conceivable permutation of an already-forced pun. The link to the first page is in the original post ā and may God have mercy on your soul.
I kept up with it in semi-real time and it was quite a journey. The slow realization that every single comic had the same punchline, the morbid curiosity of seeing how each one was going to work into the format, and the psychotic amusement as he occasionally just layered them in there. I think thereās like twelve in the final comic, but thatās just a guess. Thereās probably more than twelve variations ofĀ āCheck out my sick elephantā. A lot more.
Twenty-one in the final comic. Someone counted them all, in the whole series, and they claim thereās sixty-three in total. (I believe them.)
The other thing no oneās pointed out yet is that in the first Chekhov strip, the dialogue is largelyĀ Chekhov short story titles strung together. I lost count myself (because so many of them are just single words, like āArtā) but I think there are forty-two in all.
I went back and added more after taking this screenshot, but it gives you an idea:
Hereās us playing āCobbled Togetherā (a new song) at band practice a couple weeks ago~~
Mort (5/8): Pillbugs
Mort (4/8): Mantis
you ever got a crush on, presumably, a witch or something, so you gotta go to this midnight party in the middle of the woods even though it creeps you right out? anyway hereās āHarvest Masqueradeā--a song, maybe about that sort of thing
Mort (3/8): Down
Mort (2/8): Up
Mort 1/8, The Leaf
This Saturday Iām going to start a short comic Iāve been working on. Itās only 8 strips, so Iāll post one each Saturday from 10/13 to 12/1. Itāll be officially hosted on my website, but Iāll actually post all of them on Tumblr too.
