Weekend Update
On Saturday the locals had a Frontier Days celebration at a local ranch. I was pretty bored there last year so this year I took my knitting and I was having so much fun I almost didn’t get around to the knitting part.
I put my chair next to the local historical museum table and had a grand time talking to them about archery and atlatls and homesteading. Hopefully I can glean through our arrow bucket and donate some wooden arrows we made that are no longer safe to shoot but perfectly safe for a bit of show and tell at the museum.
I’ve decided to look for some cane plants (arundo donax) to grow in our yard so I can stop asking neighbors for some. It will make a good wind break, dust screen, and hopefully atlatl darts for my quiver. Atlatl darts are 6′ to 9′ long more or less and I’ve made them before but they fell apart on me so I need to try again. I would also like to donate some atlatls and darts to the outdoor museum when I can make the time to do it.
I was sad that the Native American dancers that were at the Frontier Days last year didn’t come this time. I’m guessing passing the hat didn’t cover their trip and they shouldn’t have to suffer just to be here so I hope someone sees the wisdom in funding their journey next time.
We did have karaoke though. I got to see a lot of my friends up there singing.
Sunday I tried to watch 2 full seasons of Game of Thrones so I could return them to the library on time. I only got through one season so I’ll have to reorder the other season and wait for it to come around again.
We also finally made some good headway on the chicken coop and got the roosts in there and 2 of the walls up. It is good to see progress after letting it sit through the triple digit temperatures all summer.
Between sawing wood I got a bit of knitting done on my socks. But it was windy and the wispy sock yarn kept tangling.
Today I was hoping to work on my gourd art with the new carver we got but mother nature decided a big dust storm was more important. I’m lucky my laundry on the clothesline didn’t end up in Barstow, CA. So after we made a trip to a hardware store for more parts for our chicken coop and got some more cat food for the land-o-cats, we headed home.
I’ve fallen in love with some knitting podcasts. I don’t see how those people have the time to make daily youtube videos, make so many knitted, crocheted, and sewn projects, and still work a day job. I must be really bad at time management or they must never sleep. I know doing those is one of my goals, but I don’t even have time and I don’t have a day job either.
Umbrella Fail
Bullet Journal Bye Bye
I got swept up in the bullet journal idea and I’ve been keeping one for a few months. But I realized the only aspect of it that is really useful to me is my month long grid of daily tasks. Also, I was chasing my bullet journal all over the house, never quite remembering where I wrote in it last. Sometimes it was on my desk, other times on my bed or in my knitting bag or on the recliner. So today I bought a $5 wipe off 14 x 14″ memo board at Dollar General and that is going to go up on my bedroom wall. I redid the task list in categories. In other words, under exercise it has belly dancing, hooping, juggling, archery and walking. If in the course of the day if I do one of those things I’d check off both exercise and archery for example. I have 9 major categories which are Exercise, Self-Care, Chores, Arts & Crafts, Writing, Fiber Arts, Relationships, Education, and Metaphysics. Each category will also have a blank line for ‘other’. So if I go swimming, I’d write that under ‘other’ and still get a check mark for exercise. My goal is to hit each category each day. I have so much clarity about this now. I will be able to see at a glance without opening a book just how well I’m doing each day.
And just to make it more fun, I’m going to give myself Slytherin points each day to make a yearly grand total. I’ll post a photo when I get the dry erase board finished.
We finally got a little rain 3 days ago. The thundercloud was right over the mountain my house is at the foot of. So the lightning was scary close. As I drove away I saw a thick bolt of lightning hit the ground just up the hill from me. This area is known for lightning strike fires.
So yesterday I saw a helicopter with a bucket flying over the mountain but I didn’t see any smoke so I don’t know where it was off to. Maybe Big Bear area.
The only way to get to our only bathroom is through the kitchen. So when I woke up I was half asleep as I stumbled into the bathroom. On the way back I was more awake, and saw a scorpion as big as my palm right in the path where I’d just walked barefooted! Well, I was definitely awake then. The kittens were bouncing all over the kitchen too. When I got a better look, it looked dead though. I dropped a plastic fork near it and it didn’t move. So after my heart stopped racing, I got a broom and a dustpan on a long handle and scooped it up so my partner wouldn’t step on it on his way to the bathroom.#desertproblems
So that is how my day started. Happy Sunday.

The Kittens Have No Mittens
I just want to cry because of all the kitten scratches I’ve gotten in the last 12 hours. The four kittens are bouncing off the walls. I’m about to leave the house for the day just to get away from the sharp little monsters. Honestly. Ouch.
Brave starts here.
Eating Experiment
Lately I’ve spent so much money eating out because my house is too hot to stay in. And I can sit in the air conditioned library sometimes, but they open late and close early and they aren’t open at all on Friday and Sunday. Sooooooooooo...I usually hang out at the cafe, the deli, or the laundromat. And I either need breakfast, lunch or dinner or more than one of those.
And right now our kitchen isn’t functional so cooking at home is horrible.
In short, I’m going broke, so I need to find another alternative.
So I’m going to challenge myself either to live off the food that is already in the house or limit my food spending to $1. a day for the rest of July and then August. Hopefully the weather will be out of the triple digits by then and I can go back to cooking like a normal person.
What Is It About Me and Afternoons?
I’m sitting at the library trying to write and about every five minutes I realize I’ve fallen asleep and I wake up doing some crazy gesture with my hand.
Starting Again (I had to re-title my blog because of a typo).
I was at the library reading The Amazing Book is Not on Fire: the World of Dan and Phil. Frankly I’d never heard of them, so after reading it I looked them up on youtube and watched their Pokemon Go episode. I watched a few of their videos and died laughing. Which is hard to do at a library without making any noise.
So based on a page in their book, I wrote the following:
A-Z of Zelena
A. Abracadabra
B. Balloon animals
C. Crochet or Circus
D. Donuts
E. Elephants
F. Fire-dancer
G. Gargoyle
H. Hypnotist
I. Imagination
J. Juggling
K. Knitting
L. Lollipop
M. Monkeys/Milliner
N. Nanowrimo
O. Origami
P. Purple
Q. Queen of Crafts
R. Raks Sharky
Q. Queen of crafts
S. Slyherin
T. Time Travelers Fantasy Society
U. Unicycle
V. Victoriana or Vortex
W. Writer
X. X-tra special
Z. Zelena’s Utopia
This idea came from another page in Phil and Dan’s book.
Hi. This is an autobiography of my teenage years. And by teenage, I mean during the ‘70′s. I sewed my own bell-bottoms, embroidered my own jeans, made hiphuggers and halter tops and tie-dyed my own t-shirts.
I also learned how to juggle and hung out with other jugglers and threw things at each other like balls, rings, pins, torches, machetes and axes.
My favorite high school art teacher was Mr. Danielson. He had long brown hair and a thick beard. He did impressive leatherwork and taught us how to do linoleum block printing and painting and sculpture.
I went to summer school nearly every year so I could take cool classers like sewing, swimming and art.
I was in the choir in Junior High School but in about 10th grade I quit because I didn’t like the songs the choir director picked out. I didn’t think it was right to make us sing religious songs in public school.
My English teacher in high school was so impressed with me she kicked me out of English. She hooked me up with private poetry classes with the head of the English department. His name was Mr. Bigalow and he had big frizzy hair and I was terrified of him.
When 12th grade was about to start I found out I had so many credits after all those summer school classes that they said I could graduate a year early or go to college half the day and high school half the day. I didn’t even know that was possible. And college was way more exciting, so that is what I did.
So what did we do for fun when we didn’t have the Internet? We went roller skating at the skating rink that had old fashioned rules like ‘no jeans allowed’.
I planted a huge garden. I practically lived at the carnival when it came through town each year. I read a ton of books.
I took guitar class in high school so there was always practice. I got all the neighborhood girls together and choreographed a dance to The Lion Sleep’s Tonight.
And in 1977 I took up belly dancing. I also studied mime, ballet, and theater.
So Much For the Novel
I had every intention of going to the library and working on my novel for an hour at least. So I start with a new notebook and put a few sentences and have an idea to use the librarian’s name put through an anagram generator to be the lead character in my book. So then I log into the computer system. That was my first mistake. Turns out her name makes no cool ‘other names’ that are usable, but now I’m logged in and then wind up on websites for fantasy novel name generators, which leads me to sites for Game of Thrones name generators, and next thing I know I’m on Facebook talking about PokemonGo. Now you know why I never finish writing a novel in spite of participating in four or five Nanowrimo contests. Gah, so easily distracted. What am I going to do with myself.
Now I don’t even feel like writing. I feel like looking on Pinterest for the next hour until the library closes.
I brought my knitting too but I didn’t work on that either. Or reading for that matter. And I keep nodding off at the computer keyboard.
A is for Angst
All of my other blogs have a theme and I found I had no blog just to speak my mind. This is my first post in my new blog so I hope you will follow along and keep me company, otherwise I’m just talking to myself.
I lost my temper today because it was so hot in my house. My boyfriend said, “Why don’t you go to the library,” so here I am. The library has air conditioning and my mood immediately improved. What I really wanted to do today was stay home and sew, but I can’t concentrate with my brain cells boiling in my head. I just bought a lot of sewing patterns and I’d like to dive in and make something, but I don’t have a sewing area set up anymore. Life can be so maddening at times.
Tomorrow I’m going to an all day knitting thing so I won’t have to deal with the house being over 100 degrees. One of the women there invites us over to swim, so I hope she is there tomorrow. Her husband is in a hospice so if she doesn’t make it there I understand.
It’s going to be 12 days until the next paycheck so I need to generate some income. I work out of my home, so that is why I’m so angry. I can’t work in that environment. I can do some things at the library. They don’t seem to care if I’m knitting but I’m not going to try to paint in here or do wood burning or any of the other 20 crafts I need to work on right now.
Once the sun goes down we are going to have a campfire and roast hot dogs over the fire and I’m looking forward to that part.
