My father came back from his bike ride with a wounded bird, bleeding from it’s beak, something sticking out of it’s face and a broken wing. We gave it water and I sang and talked to it and held the little box it was in against my chest the whole way to the 24 hour vet that takes injured animals for the wildlife conservationists, and its started cheeping back to me. It’s eyes were open by the time we got there, and they told us they were just going to euthanize it. Watching my father’s face fall as they told us that, and feeling my own heart drop (we both were hoping badly that they could save it) was terrible.

My heart is a tender, sad, thing tonight and I wish I could heal wounds and could have saved it myself. It was a flicker woodpecker. RIP.
