I’m A Dumbass.

Do you ever realize you made a huge mistake and know you look like a dumbass? Because same. 

When I created this blog a few months ago, I made it because I wanted to combine two of my favourite things: Lesbians and dark academia. So I came up with the name Sappic Dark Academia. (do you see the problem already?) I was pretty proud of it. I thought that Sappho has a dark academia vibe.

Little did I know, I was a complete dumbass and I misspelled Sapphic. I MISSPELLED SAPPHIC IN MY FUCKING URL. INSTEAD OF “SAPPHIC” I WROTE “SAPPIC.” So I was going around this whole time thinking “wow, I’m so smart and cool. Look at me coming up with a dope name and posting about lesbians and dark academia,” when in reality I just looked like a fucking dolt.

Anyways, a few people messaged me and pointed out my mistake and I’M SO GRATEFUL THAT THEY DID. Thank you so much to @manicpixiedreamangel and @sweetmotheroffuck for pointing it out to me!!!! I feel like such a dumbass, but I was able to rectify my stupid mistake and change the spelling. You guys are the real friends who tell you when you have spinach in your teeth.

I saw a post (tagged drark academia) yesterday that bemoaned how disappointing it is to live in a place that doesn’t have ‘rich history’ when one could live in a place like Greece, Italy, England, etc. Do not be mistaken: the lack of anglo history does not connote a lack of history.

white people aren’t the only people capable of creating history, and they certainly aren’t the only people worth being interested in.

THIS IS SO IMPORTANT. Non-anglo history is super interesting too! Plus, you don’t need a connection with any history at all to have a dark academia aesthetic. I personally make it a mission of mine to learn about all of the history in the area where I live, whether it’s anglo or not.

A list of more personal dark academia things:

Post a picture of your favourite book, annotated or otherwise.

Outfit pictures – embrace your individual style.

Any pretty locations you visit: libraries, coffee shops, campus buildings, vintage stores, etc.

What you study: confuse the literature students by posting your science work. Stun the science academics with your knowledge of your favourite authors/genres. Help the researchers with your history notes.

Where you study – your own desk, what’s on your desk, when you like to work, etc.

Other: jewellery, your favourite mug, pretty flowers, candles, personal book collection, etc.

Studying. Study notes, thoughts about your research, any text books, etc.

Heavy oxfords paired with your favourite dark trousers; the pockets filled with library and café receipts.

Black earl grey tea and coffee cups left on the window-sill as rain falls softly. A classical record plays in the background, crackling with the grains of time.

The golden September light falling gently on the campus buildings. A cold breeze slips under your tweed and wool as you notice new secret engraving on the stone walls.

The feeling of a new notebook, leather bound and with empty white pages. Your fountain pen rolling along the wooden desk.

Your shoulder aches under the weight of all the books you’ve brought home, perfumed with the ancient musk of the hidden library you’ve discovered for the first time.

The leaves swirling past as you sit on the bench on campus, filling your curious mind with secret languages and the sonnets of your most treasured poet.
