Brett Ratner sexually harassed Ellen Page, a young lesbian, and Johnny Depp abused Amber Heard, a young bisexual woman. Both of those men are 10-15 years older than them. Ratner’s sexual harassment of Page was explicitly homophobic, and Depp’s abuse of Heard was explicitly homophobic. They weren’t just straightforward cases of misogyny. Ratner made a deliberately lesbophobic comment toward Page, and Depp deliberately abused Heard because she is bisexual. This kind of abuse isn’t the same as the abuse that straight women face.

Straight feminists don’t bother mentioning Page and Heard’s names in the long lists of women who’ve been victimized by men like Ratner and Depp. Victims in general tend to be ignored and blamed, but this is especially so for lbpq women and women of color who are victims. There is a hierarchy to the victims we pay attention to and support. The women who are always helped the least and ignored/blamed the most are lbpq women and women of color.

Multiple perpetrators are finally being exposed, which is a good thing, but only straight white women’s abusers are being taken seriously. Furthermore, even when an lbpq woman’s abuser is exposed, most straight feminists only pay attention to the straight female victims of that violence, and ignore the singularly violent interactions that these cishet men have with lbpq women.

Depp is still enjoying media praise, wealth, and new job opportunities. Supposed “progressive, feminist” straight women such as J.K. Rowling go as far as to defend him. Though Heard’s allegations were resoundingly true, he will not lose his job the way the abusers of straight white women are. This is a fact. It’s a fact that straight feminists don’t want to admit. Lbpq women aren’t seen as “good” women to begin with, and thus everyone - including straight women - believes that lbpq women can’t face unique forms of violence at the hands of cishet men. That violence is just not taken seriously.

Even among the scores of women who’ve accused Ratner of sexual harassment and assault, straight feminists will be quick to name straight women’s names but Page’s name will go unlisted.

You have so called feminists who willingly support and get defensive over men like Depp and completely ignore that there are lbpq women who have been victimized by men like Ratner. What makes this worse is when there are lbpq women who turn out to be assaulters, such as Melanie Martinez. Straight women’s reactions to that have been telling. They attribute Martinez’s actions to her sexuality, even though women like Martinez victimize /other/ lbpq women, not straight women. Thus not only do we have straight women ignoring lbpq victims and supporting their abusers, but we also have straight women acting as if lbpq women are inherently abusive/predatory too.

It’s sickening, to say the least. Every conversation on sexual harassment and sexual assault is so fucking heteronormative. I’m so tired of seeing the same clichés and banalities uttered by straight feminists who aren’t doing anything concrete about the issue anyway and who patently refuse to help or support or even acknowledge lbpq women.
