Okay, I did some research into this! Regretfully, I can’t read Italian in order to read the actual study linked in the article, but I did my best to figure it out.

Basically, as far as I can tell, the researchers allegedly used some kind of LLM tech to translate the skeleton’s facial structure into an actual human face, then used photo-editing software to clean up any inconsistencies. However, I can’t tell if that picture is the actual portrait they made, or an alternative image generated with AI to try and illustrate the man more “dynamically”; the wording is a little vague on that subject.

Either way, this really isn’t a very good picture, and even if the research was legit, it ends up giving the impression that the researchers are half-assing their work. If months of study just led to a picture that looks like it was generated for a Facebook boomer meme, what even is the point?

not meaning to sound like i'm trivializing your experiences if you're a college student but there is literally something so sweet and tender to read about how much a student loves and values his girlfriend (also my student in the same class) on the first draft of his essay, only for them to break up before the final draft is due. like. i'm sure this is pretty devastating for both of them but it's kinda...sweet? like something kinda beautiful about how much they loved and supported each other so much that he HAD to talk about her in his personal essay about a completely different topic and now they're cutting class so they don't run into each other? like sad and beautiful. my poor students. i've been there with the college break up due to incompatibility. but like now as an older adult i just kinda appreciate it for what is and it's just kinda so endearing and sweet and sad that they're going through this and im the only one who gets to see it from this angle since no one else is reading this essay. they're like 18-19 and that heartbreak is brutal. i was walking on campus and saw them arguing like yesterday. but like. for a moment, she was his everything and the only person he trusted (besides me since i'm grading it) with this personal story that his essay was about.

so i'm reading about youth liberation and tbh i still think unschooling is dumb in the sense that i don't think it's sustainable, practical, or even helpful when we live under capitalism aside from very specific cases, and i think formal schools (with the obvious education reforms) should still exist even if/when we don't live under capitalism. and i think the vast majority of those who do unschooling aren't doing it as political praxis but are essentially using it as a way to neglect their kids but to still feel good about themselves (as the many i've seen out in the wild are straight up just just conservatives who don't want the "liberal education system" to turn their kids gay). but im reading more about why topic in general because i want to be well-informed and maybe see if i can challenge myself, yknow?

i was reading this one essay and the author said that they unschool their kids and they're fine with their kids not going to school because their kid watches hetalia and made a hetalia OC so the kid ended up learning more about the culture, language, and history for this OC personified country.

and i think that's great actually, using a student's interests to spark more learning naturally. that's actually a literal pedagogical technique that's been studied and researched (ie it's not unique to unschooling and most definitely does not originate from it). like i literally use it in my classroom for my college freshmen.

and yeah i had a hetalia phase as a young teen and a nostalgic fondness for it. the series is problematic but i think most people into it either just don't know that (the younger fans) or are able to engage with it critically (the fans who have been there since they were young teens and they're now 20-30+).

but it's like.

do you know what a fucking whiplash experience it was to see fucking hetalia mentioned in a source i'm reading on the anarchist library?? 😭
