for me Ghost grow up in a religious household, so he was told not to date men or he would end up in hell, and he's already a 'bad' person so being gay would increase his 'punishment' from God. Anyway, the years passed, and Ghost spent his whole life with girls. He didn't get Intimate with any of them, and his excuse was that he didn't believe in sex before marriage, so the girls wouldn't think that they where the problem or anything like that. Then, in the military, he met Johnny, the annoying, stubborn guy who insisted on staying with him even when he tried everything to get rid of him. Gradually, he started missing Johnny when he wasn't around. He started replying to Johnny's messages instead of just reading them. Then he began to open up about his feelings for Johnny, not because he wanted to, but because Johnny made him feel comfortable enough to take off the mask and be Simon instead of Ghost, even if just for a few hours. I feel that sometimes he might be terrified by the fact that he loved Johnny. So, one night he would cry in Johnny's room, and ten other nights he would ignore him and treat him harshly. He would pray every night, but then suddenly he would end up standing at Johnny's door, and suddenly he wouldn't care about going to hell because Johnny was already his paradise, but he's afraid to admit it yet, so he keeps his feelings for Johnny to himself. But when Johnny nearly dies on a mission, Ghost is terrified. He was going to lose his paradise before he'd even had it! So when they return to base, Ghost takes Johnny to a private place. He knows this is against the rules of their job, he knows it might cause problems for both of them, but he doesn't care. That's when he confesses his love to Johnny, and they live happily ever after.
