Working through some of these tutorials today to improve my design.
I created buttons for the UI for the Chemistry Lab projects. The Interface wasn't visually pleasing so the template for the buttons just added a nicer looking element to the application. Small touches make a big difference.
Google Ventures Jake Knapp takes us through the lightning-fast process he employs to get a teams ideas down on paper.
Researching into storyboarding, to look at how other people go about it, and how I can improve my own process.
Myself and Gary have looked at the UI for the EON Exquisite application, which allows the user to chose and modify 3D models of rings. This was heavily based for Tiffany's, as we have proposed to do an application like this for their watches and engagement rings.
I really like the clean, classy UI, using minimal colour and clear information, making the models of the rings the main feature.
Another project that I have storyboarded and created the User Interface for is the Machu Picchu simulation: Allowing users to 'walk around' Machu Picchu and learn about it.
The main icons are for the map and some information. The map icon brings up the map image that you see naming all of the main areas of Machu PIcchu. The user can fast travel to each of these places in the model. Whereas the information icon brings up the history, location and tourist information.
All around the model are little spinning markers with the image of a Quipius (The Incan method for writing information). These bring up information or photographs of the relevant site in that location.
I have gone for an aged parchment feel to the UI, as Machui Picchu is heavily visited for it's Incan history.
This is a storyboard that I created for a proposal of an engineering project. Showing you how a VW Golf works. Looking at the engine, clutch, brakes and gearbox. The user is then tested on what they've learnt by doing a 'mechanic' test where they have to try and fix problems that are occuring by replacing the correct component.
ICube Installation Diagram
EON have a piece of hardware called the ICube, which is a 3D space consisting of 5 screens, 4 projectors, motion tracking etc. Their existing installation diagram showing all of the ICube components looked like this:
This is very informative, however some of the components are outdated and have been upgraded since this one was made. Also, I think it is quite easy to get lost in it - it is not 100% clear when you first look at it what goes where.
Therefore, I have created a new one, with all the updated components and a cleaner look.
I am happy with it, although I know that there may be some changes needed - the components are quite large in relation to the ICube. The box layout may need to be revised too, although I felt that it was a good way to separate the components up into sections.
I am still awaiting feedback, so it will be good for someone else's fresh eye to look at it and critique it.
Heisenberg now has has his iconic hat and glasses. The hat still needs some work.. I need to figure out a nice way of smoothing it without losing geometry. Whenever I used Dynamesh or Dividing half of the hat disappeared. I may need to re-model completely.
Work update - I have sculpted Heisenbergs head more today, adding in a lot more detail to his wrinkles and features, as well as using FiberMesh to add in some hair for his eyebrows/goatee. I coloured him using the spotlight tool, alternating between a few different textures.
I am definitely happy with my result. I would like to add more to him, maybe adding in his glasses and hat, which I would probably be better modelling in 3DS Max and putting them together.
Work in progress - Today we were given an assignment of modelling a celebrities head. We used lined up images imported to ZBrush to help us get the proportions correct.
Considering I'm new to ZBrush, and this started of as a sphere, I am pretty happy with my progress so far and I'm excited to try and get him finished off tomorrow.
I'm really enjoying the ZBrush training so far. Using a few different tools such as dynamesh, masking and the inflat/move brushes we sculpted our own tree last week. Today's task is to colour/texture it. We looked at the polypainting tool briefly, but have been mainly looking at the Spotlight tool. This allows you to both paint on and sculpt on various different textures, with many options as you can see on the wheel above.
Considering my lack of existing modelling/texturing knowledge I am very pleased with the outcome of mine so far. I'm definitely picking things up and I would like to put more practice into in.
Learning the basics on ZBrush today. Overall, I like the interface of it; how you can easily customise it to suit the tools you are working with, and that by holding ctrl whilst hovering over buttons. it gives you a short description of its function.
As I am new to modelling, I only have 3ds Max training to compare it to, but I have enjoyed using ZBrush today. I can imagine it being very time consuming and frustrating to create a photo realistic model, but it was definitely lots of fun for creating a grungy, eroded rock look.
Upon researching Interactive Chemistry Applications, I came across this website which has a series of interactive flash exercises. The concept is definitely one to take on board. It shows interactive experiments, quizzes and examples of reactions. Our applications would obviously be in 3D, not 2D flash animations. I would also expect them to be easier to follow than these examples, visually more exciting and with much more functionality. But in terms of the concept, this was quite a good find.
We want to increase people's awareness of the EON Reality Coding School so that we can attract more students to apply for the next intake. Here's a quick thought process on how we might go about it.
So, hello! First post on my EON blog! This is basically a list of the areas/skills that we will be working on with EON, and where I feel most comfortable with what I already know and what I have learnt through the 3 month training that we have just completed.
I would like to improve my skills on texturing and modelling by the end of the course, but ultimately want to work on building up my design portfolio, and see where I would be able to fit in within EON.
