About Symmetra
I should have probably mentioned this much earlier but oh well-
1. Hindi is not the only language of India. India had like 150+ major languages and ~1200 languages in total. Hindi is one of the most commonly spoken languages in North India and ofc a huge majority of Indians do speak Hindi. But Satya is from Hyderabad, which is a city in South India. A quick google search reveals the language spoken there is a mix of Hindi, Telugu and Urdu. One can argue that she might be comfortable in Hindi. She might be, but Hindi as her mother tongue? I don’t think so.
2. Bollywood is BIG in India. But mostly in the North. South Indian states have their own cinema industries. Andhra Pradesh (Satya’s homestate) ESPECIALLY has a huge and prolific industry with very passionate fans. If Satya grew up in the slums, I’m sure she’s more of a Tollywood fan than Bollywood.
3. Indian traditional outfits and bridal wear vary heavily from state to state. You can usually tell where a person is from by seeing the way they drape a saree, bindi type (the traditional one, not the sticker), etc. But they can very roughly be divided into North and South Indian types. Most bridal sarees you see are North Indian styles. The saree design work, materials, etc is very different from South Indian ones.
4. South Indian and North Indian cuisine is also very different, This includes snacks, desserts and methods of preparation. Naans, chhapattis are very North Indian. Rice, Idlis are South. Though these days you get everything everywhere (Psst, I would recommend not eating North Indian food in the South Indian restaurant and vice-versa, it sucks! >
I implore fanartists and fanfic authors to please research a little before writing Satya. My country is huge and has many many cultures, languages, etc. But Blizzard made it easier by giving her hometown’s name. I myself don’t know much about Hyderabad despite being Indian and a South Indian at that (different state). I know a lot of research is involved. And people might probably not realise your research because they wouldn’t know/care. But please do not assume all Indians’ mother tongue is Hindi, or that everyone watches Bollywood. Again, who knows, Satya might actually be a North Indian who grew up in South India and prefers Hindi over Telugu and Bollywood over Tollywood. It is entirely possible, but quite unlikely. Food is ok though, it’s very possible to get any cuisine anywhere. But it’s nice to see a mention of the famous Hyderabadi biryani maybe?
Please, please read up a little about India. This post isn’t telling you you’re doing it wrong or this is the right way. I’m just asking for a bit of research. Just wikipedia would do. It’s not hard. I’ve seen people do it and get it right. I cannot tell you how exciting it is to read a fic where Satya speaks Telugu. It shows the author’s research and love for Satya. Or see awesome artwork of Satya wearing very beautiful South Indian outfits. I love seeing my county represented. I love it even more when it is done right. This is just a tired plea from a fan. Thank you for reading.
