torrents work like this

i have a file or folder on my pc that i want to share with other people. let's call it gayshit.mp3

unfortunately gayshit.mp3 is 750mb and im not paying for discord nitro so i need another way to send it

i put it into qbittorrent and it makes a torrent file. this is essentially a very small file that points to gayshit.mp3 so other computers can find it. kinda like a treasure map

i send this tiny file to my friend, who loads it into qbittorrent. their computer takes a moment to find mine over the vast expanse of cyberspace and then (as long as my pc is running and the file is still where it should be), it gets copied from my hard drive to theirs

this is the cool part: if somebody else loads that tiny file, they can download it from both of us. if i'm offline but my friend is on, the third person can still get it. this also means that if two people have separate halves of the file, they can download the other half from each other. as long as some combination of people have the pieces between them, they can all have the whole thing.

crucially this does not require a server!!! you can just upload the file to a few people and as long as they keep it, it's still accessible. as long as somebody, somewhere is still connected, it's available forever. the only way it goes away is if everybody disconnects from it.

ive been reading the open veins of latin america and one chapter is called "the sugar is the dagger and the empire is the assassin". galeano (the writer) goes on to explain how cuba was (at the time of writing) moving its economy forward and exporting a lot of sugar. sugar, however, had become a simbol of colonial and imperialist oppression due to how the vast sugarcane plantations of cuba drained the land and ended all diversity of nature, job options and education in the island. it was continuous slavery and humiliation for the cuban people for centuries. yet, while the revolutionary government also sought to diversify its agriculture, it also had been achieving extremely high levels of productivity in the sugar sector and exporting primarily to the rest of the socialist bloc. and this is really interesting: sugar is the dagger, and not the murderer, because it is not the actual cause of the poverty and oppression cuba faced. it was imperialism. sugar, like any other physical economic thing is a mere mechanism. it can be used by the empire against cuba or by cuba against the empire.

really reminds me of situations like anti-civs decrying soviet industrialization (which saved the country from total nazi subjugation) or people talking about things like colonial-era ships as if they by themselves carried some form of mystic evil aura. cuba learned that this is not the correct way to go forward. both of these are not only idealist perspectives but also deeply SILLY ones. go cuba

There's a really good book on colonialism and cotton, it's an actual analysis of modern capitalism and how it was born BECAUSE of cotton. Beckert's ''Empire of Cotton'' -- studied it in history alongside Landes's ''Wealth and poverty of nations'' (the latter blames subjugation on the subjugated but it's interesting to read how the author tried to rationalise colonialism as an inevitable thing).

The industrial revolution needed the products of colonialism to exist. The current capitalist system wouldn't exist without cotton and how the Global North reorganised the global landscape so they could get cheap labor and raw materials.

It's inseparable -- all across the Global South, all across world history -- cotton and colonialism, sugar and imperialism, bananas and imperialism, lithium and 21st century imperialism. You can't disjoint the raw material from the cruelty they're willing to put third world bodies and lives through to get that raw material for cheap, to broaden the profits, to broaden the luxuries.

That's why colonialism, imperialism, cheap labor, etc aren't theoretical concepts: they're material. They're linked to specific events and strategies and raw materials.
