a prom where we have yet to be born but traveled here through a time machine and are in awe of how the past looks the entire time, otherwise, nostalgia for the present
collaborative effort amongst all 39 spring 2016 studio foundations ii students. this project is about love, and what more fitting place to talk about love than prom? below is an excerpt of a poem that was read at the event.
"attention people who don't think you are doing enough to help others: you are beautiful for having that fear you are my kind of person, and I love you
in the countryside where my dad lives it is beautiful with windmills and stars and I know we can help each other achieve for free the fulfillment that corporations are trying to sell us
[heck] yeah, dude! justin bieber is my [freaking] dad!
nothing is promised in the future. right now is the time to be with people
and [screw] any poet who wouldn't tell their audience 'I love you' because it's a cliche if you're reading this, I love you if you're alive, I love you
pretend it's your first day on earth no matter where you are, you're experiencing a sequence of events that may never occur in the universe in that specific way ever again we are the animals that forgot we are animals shout out to the estimated two hundred billion galaxies in our universe the only reason you are made to think that there is something wrong with the way you look is so people can sell you things
if I'm successful on earth then my life will seem like a hug that took eighty years to give a hug is the perfect poem
and why does it cost so much to be alive? and after all this I still support fundraising efforts to give iphone 5's to wild animals our life is so weird i'm sorry! please, recognize your death is coming and cultivate love to everyone you can" - steve roggenbuck, our life is so weird i'm sorry
for those of you unfamiliar with the foundations curriculum, each class is a nine credit hour course made up of four separate classes. sixteen hours a week are spent in the studio during class time, but homework generally must also be done in studio outside of those hours. it is not uncommon for people to stay in the studio late or even all night before a big project is due. as much time as we have spent together over the course of the past year, it shouldn't come as a surprise that several close friendships have been forged out of shared studio hours.
though we may get discouraged at times, we each have a deep love for art. there is something about it that keeps us going, and binds us not only to art but also to each other. it was phrased best by a remarkable artist and instructor, alex hanson: "art makes your friends your friends."

uday challenge
what if the only vowel we had at our disposal was the letter "u"? would we be less inclined to be selfish as a society because we had to talk more about others than ourselves because we would have no word for "i"? In a collaborative effort between fellow artist emma donart and i, we attempted to answer that question. we deemed april 18th "uday" and invited those around us to participate by submitting videos where all other vowels in their phrases were replaced with u's. using our hashtag #udaychallenge they could be featured on our instagram @udaychallenge. We also set up a booth outside the arkansas union on the university of arkansas campus where we offered to record people attempting the challenge and post it directly onto the page. we received a variety of responses.
