Jimena jumped, looking over to see Sarah floating in front of her a bit self-consciously. The girl smiled, though, patting the spot next to her, and slowly Sarah floated over and sat next to her. Well - sat as much as she could. Jimena never did try to understand the physics of spirits too much. It felt like a headache incoming, and she liked spending time with Poppy and Sarah too much to suffer those kinds of headaches.
They sat in silence for a moment, long enough for Jimena to go back to polishing the tack for her horse; long enough that Jimena nearly forgot Sarah was there until the girl was touching her arm, and cold jolted through her. She jumped, twitching a little, before looking back to see Sarah holding something.
"What have you got there, Sarah?"
"...I know Christmas is going to be difficult for you this year," Sarah said, shifting and looking away again. "What with it being a full moon and all." Jimena nodded; it was a little upsetting, but she figured that she'd had Chanukah to spend with her adopted family, and after Christmas, she could give people their gifts and still call it the holidays. Sarah fidgeted again before holding out her hand. Jimena blinked, reached out to her, and Sarah dropped whatever she was holding.
It was a pendant, shaped like a star - but not a Star, and Jimena found she was perfectly alright with that, seeing as she wasn't actually Jewish and it wouldn't feel right. It was soft gold, burnished to look age-worn, yet still cool because the hand that had clung to it no longer had heat. She held it up to her eye and examined it for a moment, before turning a questioning look to Sarah.
Sarah shrugged, looking down at her hands; twisting them over each other and biting her lip.
"I wanted to give it to you now, before full moon exhaustion hits you. It was.. it was my mother's, you see. She never had a lot of jewelry, and I had to look for a very long time to find where it was, but - but I wanted you to have it. I have my Star, it's all I need, my Star, but I wanted you to have something, too, because you've become very dear to me. And I see you as a sister. And I really hope that's okay."
"Dios mío, Sarah, you don't have to give me something so important!"
"But I'd like you to have it. I wouldn't trust anyone else with it."
Jimena stared at her for a long time; stared and wondered if this was Sarah's way of fully accepting her as family. And if it was, Jimena felt something warm and soft and good curl into her stomach, and she wrapped her fingers around the necklace and smiled a shaking smile.
"I'd be honoured to have it, then."
Sarah looked at her, and smiled her soft, shy smile.
