Day 3 #asianpridechallenge TREND is the "V" sign in photos. Do we do it to make our eyes appear bigger and to cover our larger faces? In 1972 the American figure skater Janet Lynn was favored to take home gold in the Olympics in Japan. She fell during her performance and lost the gold metal. Lynn became a media sensation and during her media tours around Japan she always flashed the V-sign. A cultural phenomenon was born. I guess you could also say that that Jun Inoue, singer with the popular band the Spiders, had something to do with it as well. Inoue supposedly would flash a spontaneous V-sign during commercials, and people loved it. The trendy V-sign found itself exported to mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea (where it already enjoyed some recognition because of the decades-long presence of the U.S. military). V could stand for Victory, and w/ our history with war, could symbolize something very positive. ..... But I personally think the V-sign is proliferated much like the American's “duck face” pouts on Instagram + Facebook = all trying to achieve beauty. (Seen doing both in photo above) or maybe we just need something to do with our hands? I dunno. My personal experiences tell me that when you place the V sign close to your face in a photo it makes your face look smaller and eyes rounder. And western beauty tells me that small angled faces are desirable. So why not always do it. Asians love selfies> happy #asianheritagemonth #morethanexotic
DAY2: of my #asianpridechallenge is some history: Since 1953 a S. Korean could get 2 years in prison for cheating on his or her spouse. For the last 62 years, if you cheated on your husand or wife in S Korea, you could end up locked Tf up. The punishment often applied to the "the one who fornicated with the" cheating spouse as well. Supposedly the reason the law existed was to protect women. The idea that men -- who were more economically and socially powerful then-- took advantage of women, and if that man was charged criminally, that would give women more leverage in divorce proceedings to get their fair share. ie: i tip off a cop to raid my husband's hotel room - then we negotiate that I drop the charges after he gives me my divorce and cut. Most women, including the S korean president Park Geun Hye in 2015, believe that the law out lived its usefulness.. The constitutional court over turned that law in 2015, But for the record: an estimated 53,000 s koreans were indicted under the adultry law since they began keeping count in 1985. Day 1: #asianpridechallenge: Fresh Off The Boar star: @wonstancecoo is my current hero. Fusion did a study that (surprise) Asian-Americans are severely underrepresented on TV. Out of 100 network TV shows, only 37.9% had at least one cast member of Asian descent, and only 7.8% of those shows had multiple main cast members of Asian descent. And out of 800 main cast members on 100 network TV shows, only 52 (6.5%) were of Asian descent. --- @wonstancecoo said in an interview "[Diversity] doesn’t mean we want the white people to write Asian stories. What I want is to foster the Asian-American writers and directors and producers and actors…foster their stories to come into the spotlight a little bit. I want to support uniquely Asian-American stories. I don’t want to just play the hostage in some big studio movie. If I get that, that’s great. But if it coincides with an opportunity about the Asian-American experience that pays me, like, a quarter of the salary, I’d rather do that." ... I salute you Ms Wu. Happy #asianheritagemonth
