Sarah has grown comfortable with her sadness over the years. It’s a hard thing to accomplish, but she’s realized that it’s a part of her and she can’t really change that. Ways she’s gotten comfortable with this is by considering her empathy a strength rather than a weakness, and often makes sad playlists that vary on what she’s feeling sad about or why. 

The one thing she feels guilty about often is how her sadness rubs off on others. She really tries to keep it to herself at times in order to keep those around her happier, but that doesn’t come easy to her. It’s a big reason why she goes to therapy, so she can put her sadness into that rather than her close friends.

The library is her safe space. Reading helps her block out the sadness, but then she gets wrapped up into the stories she’s reading and gets overly emotional over whatever is happening in the plots she’s currently reading. Sometimes she has to force herself to read non fiction because it’s harder to get sad over that than fiction stories. Trying to unravel the secrets of evermore is also a wonderful distraction from her sadness

She misses her family and dog so so much! She started taking care of local stray cats near the library for awhile, and eventually one just wouldn’t leave her alone that she just had to take her home with her. She named the cat Mallory and she quickly became her emotional support animal. Luckily since she was an outdoor cat already from being a stray, Mallory is used to going places and Sarah can take her along on walks and stuff!

Thankfully Sarah has her friends to keep her grounded and help her out of her funks at times. even if her sadness doesn’t fully go away, she still knows she has support from them and that’s all she really needs to get through. If only she could have her family close by too, but she hopes that this is only temporary, that someday she will find her way back to them again.

Did Fraser need yet another book on currently studied phobias and their underlying affect on the brain? No. No, he did not. But he had heard that a new one was just recently published and there wasn’t anything wrong with having the most up to date research. Or, at least, that’s what he was telling himself as he scoured the rows of the library looking for it. He was getting close ( he assumed ) when he noticed a familiar face. “Aren’t you off today?” He asked, not trying to sound accusatory in any way but he was pretty sure Sarah didn’t work today. “I am looking for something but I don’t want to bother you, you seem pretty wrapped up in something yourself.”

It was nice to see Fraser in the library, despite knowing he was probably looking for something psychology-related again. Not that there was anything wrong with that, she thought, but she often tried to avoid those topics. Learning about different phobias and mental illnesses only made her sad for those suffering with them. Sarah shrugged her shoulders sheepishly at her friend’s question. “Guilty,” she sighed lightly. “I just got caught up in some research, but I should probably give up for the day,” she admitted, already growing tired of the never ending research that came with learning more about Evermore. Besides, she didn’t mind giving up her search for the day to help Fraser out — maybe it would ease his nerves some. “That’s okay, I don’t mind. What are you looking for today?”

Reading wasn’t exactly chief among Flora’s many and varied hobbies, but even she had to admit that there was something to the concept of curling up in the comforts of her pillow-top bed with a good book for an hour or so before turning in for the night. Most of the appeal centered around the opportunity to shut her mind off for a few precious hours – to become so absorbed in a storyline that there simply wouldn’t be room for the laundry list of to-dos and mental notes stored in that brain of hers – but then again, the broad-chested man with the chiseled face and flowing blonde hair that was plastered front and center on the cover certainly didn’t hurt, either. What could she say? Even the most uptight of people had their weaknesses, and if cheesy romances were her worst vices, Flora figured she was still in good shape. 

Unfortunately, the woman quickly discovered that she was woefully out of touch with the inner workings of the library, which left her with no other option but to wander through row after row of shelves in the hopes of finding the section she so desperately needed. Thankfully, the universe decided to drop help right into her lap in the form of a complete and total stranger. “Well, now that you mention it, I could use some help. I was looking for…” she paused, swallowing thickly as the mental picture of that cover flashed in her mind, a pointed accusation of just how embarrassing asking a total stranger for help in finding a trashy romance novel would be. “Fiction.” Yes, yes - vague enough not to put a pin on her thoughts, but just enough to get her in the right direction. Sure, the delivery was stiff, but it might’ve at least been enough for her to pull her diversion off. “Yes! That’s it – the fiction section. I was hoping I could find it on my own, but this place is like a maze.”

Sarah held her notebook close to her as she waited to hear what the other needed help with. She didn’t mind helping, for it was her job, even if she wasn’t technically on the clock. She needed a distraction, anyway, for she had been looking through the non-fiction section for long enough to give herself a headache. She could feel the woman’s hesitation, but wouldn’t have any judgement no matter what she was looking for.

A slight smile formed as soon as fiction was mentioned — a guilty pleasure of hers even if it made her sad sometimes (more so than not). “Sure, I can help you with that. Follow me,” she answered, leading the woman away from the non-fiction area. “I know what you mean.. I work here and still get lost sometimes.” The fiction section wasn’t too far away from where they were, but she wasn’t sure if the woman just wanted to find the general area or was looking for anything specific. “Any particular fiction genre you’re looking for? There’s a lot to choose from there, so I might be able to help you narrow it down?”

Zane must have looked out of place, aimlessly wandering down the aisles of non-fiction A to Z. It might have just been easier to search for the book Jack was looking for on the internet but then Zane remembered something about sourcing information and like most people he didn’t trust the stuff online. Lingering around the fantasy section Zane slumped into a defeat against the shelf. “Ah!” he yelped, not expecting anyone to be around him, let alone reach out to him, but then again he hadn’t spent much time libraries. He didn’t need to with a roommate like Jack. “Help would really good actually” he chuckled, not even able to hide the pleading in his voice. “I’ve been looking for stuff on supernatural sightings– you know small towns and stuff… and man I’ve got no clue what I’m doing.”

Even when Sarah wasn’t working, she was used to helping others find something. The library could be awfully confusing, even when there frequently. She could tell the other was lost in the aisle of books, and didn’t mind helping him out. She could sense that he was anxious, and was quick to apologize as she seemed to spook him. “Sorry! Sorry,” she repeated quickly, giving a sheepish smile in hopes to ease his nerves. “Supernatural sightings? Let’s see...” She paused to think for a moment, then motioned for him to follow her. “I think they make those sorts of books harder to find, to be honest.” Just like books on Evermore’s history and other things related. She swore it was as if they didn’t want people to look into that stuff. “Are you doing some research, or just looking out of curiosity?”

Starter: Open Location: Library

Sarah spent a lot of time at the library, even on her days off. She had worked today, but ended up staying for awhile after her shift, lost in the research of Evermore and avoiding any fiction stories for the sake of her emotions. The last book she read, she ended up crying for hours after it ended, and couldn’t stop thinking about it for days. How do people just finish a book and move on with their lives so easily? Her fingers danced across the spines of different books on the shelves, a notebook held close to her chest with her other arm. No research would be complete without some notes to go along with it. She hadn’t initially realized someone else was close by, though, glancing in their direction and immediately feeling like she was in their way. “Sorry .. Are you looking for something, too? I can get out of the way, or help you find something if you need it.”

Sarah Triste is based on Sadness from Inside Out. She is a 27 year old gifted human, librarian, and uses she/her pronouns. She has the power of intuitive empathy. Sarah is portrayed by Jessica Sula and she is open.  

CATCHING MY DEATH, AND I COULDN’T BE SURE

Sarah Triste was born to kind, doting parents; a family that loved and wanted her to succeed at her own pace. She did well in school, she didn’t have trouble making friends, money was never an issue in her life, and yet… she was sad. As far back as her memories went, she was just sad, even as a toddler on the playground followed around by this dark cloud of emotion. For awhile, she didn’t understand it. She just knew that people were struggling all of the time and she could feel it — the loneliness, the stress, the brokenness they all felt. It built and it built until it was so heavy she found herself collapsing underneath it, and there was nothing anyone could do. The sadder she became, the sadder those that loved her were. It was a never-ending cycle she couldn’t help but feed into until it was impossible to tell if she was sad at all or simply numb. Waking up in Evermore shortly after graduation she missed her parents, her childhood home and her puppy, but she had been hurting for so long… it didn’t feel all that different. No one seemed to have answers, and everyone seemed to want them. She wasn’t sure what she was meant to do now, so she cried it out, got a job at the library and researches all of the town history she can in her spare time. She doesn’t think she’ll be the one to find an answer, but the lore takes her mind off of her emotions. The library is the perfect place for her to be, a place where people are so caught up in thinking and studying that their feelings aren’t as strong. A place where she can just breathe. Sarah is hopeful that one day someone will figure out how to break the curse that holds them in place so she can get back to her family, but even when they do… she can’t say she’ll be happy about it.

I HAD A FEELING SO PECULIAR

❀ Eeyore Shepard: Being around Eeyore brings her down, pessimism radiates off of her — but she also seems to understand the heaviness she feels, so Sarah makes it a point to every so often sit in their sadness together. ❀ Nicholas St. North: He’s such a kind person, Sarah feels bad for hanging out around him. While her power is taking on the emotions of everyone else, she can’t help but notice her outlook tends to bring them down more, and she doesn’t want him to get hurt for being nice to her. ❀ Tessa Iri: Tessa is like a walking ray of sunshine. Her personality is so pure and genuine, being around her brings Sarah… not quite joy, but peace.
