Sarai Ayutthaya was born in Seattle, Washington, to Thai immigrant parents who placed great importance on hard work and education. Being the youngest of three children, she always felt the pressure to match her older siblings' achievements—they both received academic scholarships to prestigious universities. When she was 6, her father’s job transferred the family to Covington, Georgia. The move was difficult for her, who missed the bustling energy of Seattle and her friends from kindergarten. However, her parents saw Covington as a great place to raise here—a small town with good schools, affordable housing, and a tight-knit community. Despite her initial shyness, she eventually adapted to her new environment in the South.

She was incredibly close with her older brothers, Daw and Sud, despite the age difference. They spent weekends exploring the woods near their home, teaching her about nature and whittling small figurines out of wood to decorate her room. Throughout the week, they would help her with her homework and were always cheering her on. Although she was a serious student, Sarai also expanded her social horizons during high school. Sarai joined the track team and student newspaper, developing a tight-knit group of friends who shared her quirky sense of humor. Through her friendships, she discovered a passion for creative writing, where she filled countless notebooks with poetry and short stories.

During her time at Emory University, she fully immersed herself in the world of journalism. She joined the university newspaper as a staff writer—where she had the opportunity to cover a wide range of topics, from campus events to local news stories. Her passion for writing and storytelling grew with every article she wrote, and she quickly became known for her insightful and engaging pieces. Additionally, she took on a role as a radio show host at the university's station, where she interviewed local artists, musicians, and activists, giving her a platform to share their stories with the community. These experiences not only honed her writing skills, but also solidified her desire to pursue a career in journalism. She realized that through writing, she could inform, inspire, and make a difference in the world.

After graduating from Emory, Sarai stayed in Atlanta where job prospects for aspiring writers were plentiful—much bigger than it would be in Covington... The idea of tasting the different food, and writing about it was really appealing to her. Following a devastating breakup with her longtime boyfriend, six months ago, Sarai decided to move back to Covington to be closer to her parents. Even though she was still a restaurant columnist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, she worked from home unless they needed her. The rest of the time, Sarai was thrilled to call Covington home again. Being back in the warmth of her hometown and finding solace in home-cooked meals and family was just what she needed to start healing her broken heart. She recently adopted a kitten, a boy she named Gizmo.

"Ah, nice," Nicola commented as she glanced over the book set on the counter for purchase. For a moment her eyes lingered on the cover, then they shifted to the reader. "I've been curious about this one. Will you come back once you've gotten through it and let me know your review?" The 'to be read' pile was in fact many piles and all stacked very high. It seemed a daily practice to add new titles and new authors to explore to what was quickly approaching the realm of impossible to achieve. "Can I ask why you've picked this one up today?"

Sarai was at the Lost Page looking for the recent fantasy bestseller that had been talked about all over Tiktok. She peered back at the voice talking to her and smiled when she recognized Nicola. "Tiktok." She chuckled. "Predictable, but that's how I get my recommendations. I've heard so many good things about this one, I couldn't resist picking it up. You know me, I'm a sucker for anything with magic and adventure. I'll definitely report back once I finish it. Maybe we can grab coffee and I can give you all the juicy details." She winked playfully. "How are you, Nicola? I hope your week has been kind to you."

Accepting the file that she had, Wyatt looked up at Sarai when she questioned his intentions with the article that she was sharing with him. For a second, he studied her features for any indication that she was joking. Maybe a glint in her eye to suggest that she was just pulling his leg. Yet her expression was resolute and curious. As though she really expected him to unveil some master plan on how he intended to, to use her words, ‘make his life a living hell or something.’ Taking another pause, Wyatt’s shoulders shook with laughter as opened the manilla folder and pulled out the article. Folding it into thirds, he slipped in into the inside pocket of his coat.

“Just because we’re exchanging information in manilla folders, doesn’t mean we’re in a movie, Sarai.” He was only teasing of course, but her suggestion that he was out for Jace’s blood was humorous to him. Wyatt could only wonder what she imagined that he would do with the article that she shared. At most if there was something damning enough, he could share it with the Georgia Bar Association. But at the end of the day, Wyatt was not seeking Jace’s downfall. They were not sworn enemies, nor did he care to make the man’s life a living hell, as she so eloquently phrased. "Are we not? Damn, I was hoping we were in the movies." Sarai feigned disappointment. Although a part of her wasn't sure if it would make for a very exciting film. It wasn't that she wanted to see Jace's life ruined, per se. But a petty part of her was hoping that Wyatt's digging might uncover something that would take Jace down a peg or two. Lord knows his ego could use some deflating. Still, she knew it was probably best not to get her hopes up. Wyatt seemed more curious than vengeful. The thought of spending an extended period of time around Jace made her skin crawl. "How did your father put up with him? Because eww..." She cringed, the mere idea of it making her want to run and scrub herself raw in the shower. 

She shook her head, annoyance flashing across her features as she recalled her past interactions with Jace. "He just irritates me. Imagine not being able to let shit go over a paper. I mean, I didn't write anything that was slanderous. He's just sensitive." Her brows furrowed as she took another sip of her latte, the warmth doing little to soothe her agitation. "So you're not planning any grand takedowns then?" She asked, disappointment in her tone. "Pity. I was kind of hoping you had some secret plan to expose him as the ass he is." She sighed, setting her cup down and leaning back in her chair. "Guess I'll just have to settle for the small satisfaction of knowing someone else sees through his bullshit too."

“I told you I have nothing to wear,” her clothes were still in her suitcase at Georgie’s place. Eventually, she would either have to look into getting her own place or shifting back with her parents. Seeing as they were not fully appraised of her “situation” with Connor. . . you know, their divorce. . . she preferred to couch surf with her various friends in town. She’d thus far given them a bullshit excuse and eventually she would break it to them. Granted, they’d seen the tabloids and asked her questions. She’d brushed them aside as baseless rumors. Her and Connor were still very much in love. They were still very much together. All empty words. Boldfaced lies.

Scanning her friend’s closet, she tried to find something suitable for herself. What was Sarai’s was Michelle’s, after all. Vice versa of course. Though her closet was not nearly as nicely organized now because she did not have one. Pulling out a dress that seemed nice enough, she evaluated it. Was it excessive considering they were just going to brunch in Covington? It wasn’t like there would be paparazzi. Michelle was not famous enough to generate that much press, but this was Covington, not L.A. People knew her here. She might have a touch of fame in Hollywood, but surely in her hometown, she was considered a star, right? Michelle could only hope. Otherwise, her entire decade of work would be for naught. “What about this,” she asked, holding up an option that might have been suitable for brunch in another city. Not their tiny hometown.

Sarai lounged back in her spot on the bed as she watched Michelle rummage through her closet—trying to find something suitable to wear for their brunch outing. Her best friend was used to a more glamorous lifestyle, but in Covington, things were a bit more laid-back. Which meant she never found the need to go overboard with her wardrobe. "That dress is cute," she said with a grin, her eyes twinkling with amusement. Getting up, she walked over to the closet and pulled out a simple sundress with a floral pattern. "How about this one? It's casual but still cute, and you won't feel overdressed." Sarai held the dress up against Michelle, tilting her head as she assessed the look. "Plus, it'll show off your killer legs," she added with a wink before going back to the bed and taking a seat once more.

"If I haven’t told you yet, I'm really glad you're here," Sarai said, truly meaning every word. "I know things have been rough lately, but I want you to know that I'm always here for you. No matter what." That was what best friends did, wasn’t it? It would be odd for her not to be supportive. Sensing that the mood was getting a bit heavy, she decided to lighten things up. "About the brunch spot we're going to. It’s one of the best places I’ve been too, even better than what it was before it reopened. I should know since I reviewed the place." she said, wiggling her brows.

It was the most basic of lessons: water makes things wet. So it wasn’t like Lee didn’t know he was going to end up literally soaked, shirt and jeans thick with water and clinging uncomfortably cold to his skin. It was just that he hadn’t thought that far ahead, beyond how good it felt in that moment, almost as if the rain was carrying something away with it as it pooled towards the storm drains. He very well could end up with a cold, huddled in the entryway, waiting for the rain to pass, then walking home. Or maybe he should just walk home despite the downpour? Hearing him address her as little had her gasping. "Excuse you, I'm not so little anymore." She shook her head, "I'm just heading home, actually. Stopped by to pick up my takeout order," she explained, gesturing towards Brunch and Barrel. "I drove here, so if you need a ride back to your place, I'm happy to give you one." She studied him for a moment, taking in his drenched appearance. Despite the fact that he was soaked to the bone, there was something almost serene about the way he stood there, as if the rain was washing away more than just the dirt and grime of the day. It was a feeling she could relate to—sometimes, it was nice to just let go and let the elements take over.

Sarai paused, tilting her head to the side as she considered him. "Seriously though, Lee. What's got you standing out here in the pouring rain? Is everything okay?" She asked—her tone shifting from playful to concerned. At times, people sought out the rain when they needed a moment to themselves, to process something heavy or to just escape from the world for a little while. Maybe she was just worried for no reason.

Sarai carried coffee and some pastries to Caria's boutique, Remedy Wellness—a smile blooming on her lips. The sun shone brightly, hinting at the arrival of spring. She loved spring. Pretty soon, she would be able to walk around with sandals and sundresses. The bell chimed as she pushed the door to the boutique. As soon as she spotted her friend, her smile widened, and she headed straight for the counter—placing the coffee and pastry she'd bought for Caria on the cash register. 

"I come bearing gifts. Who's your favorite local friend?" She asked teasingly, before her phone buzzed. “One minute.” She said, swiping at the LCD screen. It was a text from her Editor. Sarai quickly shot back a reply before looking up at Caria again. "So, how have you been?" She asked, her gaze sweeping around the boutique curiously. "Got any new pieces you could recommend for me?"

Amelia knew not to pick a super scary movie for their movie night so she went with The Strangers. It was one of her favorite movies with how realistic the plot was to real life. The ending credits have rolled and she couldn’t help but look over at Sarai to see how she was doing. When she let out a small scream at her cat meowing, she had to hold back a small laugh. The girl was a trooper for putting up with her and her horror movie fetish.

“Of course I’ll stay the night. I mean you are absolutely right it is too late to drive home.” It was never too late for her to drive home but she could tell the other was freaked and she wasn’t going to let her suffer through the night scared and alone. Plus, she was enjoying herself too much to actually want to leave. “I think it’s the perfect night to stay over too.”

She moved to grab a drink as she glanced over at the girl. “So, what did you think of the movie? Not too scary right? I tried to pick one that wouldn’t be too bad.” She was just glad that Sarai gave the movie a chance even though it may have scarred her. “Do you want to watch a romance movie to get rid of the horror?” She suggested.

Sarai flashed Amelia a sheepish smile, still clutching the blanket tightly. "Great, I'm glad you're going to stay. I just want to make sure you're safe, you know?" She said, trying to play it off as concern for her friend, but her wide eyes and the way she kept glancing towards the dark hallway betrayed her true feelings. She let out a nervous laugh as Gizmo continued to nuzzle against her, seeking attention. "I mean, I'm not scared or anything. It's just, you know, better to be cautious. Plus, it's always more fun having a sleepover with your bestie, right?" She rambled, her words tumbling out in a rush as she tried to cover up her embarrassment at being so easily spooked.

When Amelia asked about the movie, she shrugged, attempting to appear nonchalant. "It was... intense. I mean, I'm not usually a big horror movie fan, but I've got to admit, it kept me on the edge of my seat." She admitted, her voice a little shaky. "But hey, I'm always up for trying new things, even if they do give me nightmares for a week." She joked, trying to lighten the mood.

While she wasn’t in the mood to watch anything else, maybe a romance movie would help with her fear. "Yes, please. I think my poor heart could use a break from all the suspense and jump scares. Let's find the cheesiest, most predictable rom-com we can and just relax." She said, finally loosening her grip on the blanket and reaching for the remote. "And maybe we should keep the lights on."

Taylor was halfway through her questions section of her lecture when she noticed a familiar face sitting at the far back of the auditorium. Since this was an open lecture, there were several new faces occupying those seats that weren't in her classes already, which, of course, the slender woman welcomed with grace, because the more people seemed interested by these topics, the more they asked questions, granting her the chance to spread more awareness on things people usually misunderstood.

But Sarai being there meant the younger woman had actually taken upon Taylor's invitation for dinner and drinks later, right? At least, she assumed so.

Once the lecture was over and in batches, students emptied the auditorium, the professor's green hues settled on the cute brunette, plastering a smirk on her plump lips as Taylor grabbed her papers, books and bag. "I see you've decided to come." Her perfectly designed brow arched up at her own statement. "What's your conclusion, then?" As she asked her question, the young professor began stepping down from the stage and walk towards the petite brunette. "Do people only come to my classes because I look this good?"

Sarai felt a wave of embarrassment wash over her as she realized she must have looked like a lovesick puppy during the entire lecture. There was no denying it now, she was drawn to Rain. The way she moved and spoke with such confidence and grace. It was as if the woman had a magnetic pull on her—making it impossible to focus on anything else. Was she paying attention to the actual lecture? Not even a little. Her attention was struck on Rain.

As the students filed out of the auditorium, she lingered behind, her heart racing as Rain approached her with a smirk on her lips—her gaze lingering on the other's mouth for a second too long. She felt her cheeks flush at the professor's teasing question, knowing she had been caught red-handed. "I have to admit, I wasn't paying much attention to the content," she confessed, a sheepish grin spreading across her face. "But in my defense, it's hard to focus when you have such a captivating presence."

"I highly doubt that people go to your classes just for your looks alone," she continued, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Your brilliant mind and engaging teaching style have a lot to do with it too." Taking a step closer to the professor, she uttered—ignoring the butterflies in her stomach. "Now, about that meal you mentioned... I know a great spot just a few blocks from here. What do you say we continue this conversation over there?"

"It really is surprisingly small," she chuckled in agreement. "I mean, I knew you were American, but what are the odds, huh?" It was really a slim chance and yet here they were. She couldn't help but think that meant something, or maybe she was just overthinking things—as usual. "Well, I'm definitely excited for it, despite the headaches around it," she shrugged. "I've been experimenting the menu at home. But my fiancee, my step-daughter and my sister aren't exactly the most unbiased with their taste tryings." They were in fact very much the opposite of it. "I do hope it's a hit when it opens though."

"Oh, Gizmo is a sweet name," she commented, looking down at the bags briefly and then back at Sarai. "Ours are Shadow and Tiger. What kind of cat is Gizmo?" she asked, not just out of politeness, she was in fact interested. Greta was never a pet person, having grown up in a boarding school with no such luxuries. But she loved cats and it was nice when she and Lake adopted theirs. It was something she appreciated now. "I love cats really, they're so full of personality."

When Sarai thanked her for the invited, Greta nodded. "I sure hope you like the food this time." There was a bitter note in Greta's tone, and she regret it the minute she said it. "Sorry, that was uncalled for," she said in a sigh. "My bad."

Sarai would have never imagined Greta was from Covington. What were the chances? Right now, she was still on the fence on whether or not she liked this new discovery. "It really is quite the coincidence," she agreed, nodding her head. "But maybe it's a sign that we were meant to cross paths again." She didn’t want to go around feeling worried in her own town. "I'm sure your family's opinions are still valuable. Biasness is not a bad thing," she chuckled. "It's always good to have a supportive circle around you." Her own family always had her back—which she truly appreciated.

When the conversation shifted to their pets, Sarai's eyes lit up with enthusiasm. "Gizmo is a little British shorthair," she explained, a fond smile playing on her lips. "He's a bit round, but he’s got so much energy. I can barely keep up with him sometimes." She laughed, picturing the playful kitten in her mind. "Shadow and Tiger sound like lovely names. I bet they bring a lot of joy to your home."

As the chef mentioned hoping she would enjoy the food at the new restaurant, a flicker of guilt crossed Sarai's features. She took a deep breath and met Greta's gaze with sincerity. "I understand your reservations about my opinion, given everything. But I want you to know that I've always aimed to be fair and objective in my reviews. It's my job to provide honest feedback, even if it's not always glowing." She paused for a moment, choosing her words carefully. "I truly believe in your talent as a chef, and I have no doubt that your restaurant will be a success. My past critique was never meant to be a personal attack on you or your abilities." She offered a sincere smile, hoping the other understood it truly wasn’t personal.

For someone like Reyhan, who didn't let people in easily, it felt really nice to hear those words. 'I appreciate you', 'you're the best'... Though she wasn't a people's pleaser, it did make her feel appreciated. It did make her feel like she had done something right. So, as she kept her arms around Sarai for and extra heartbeat, the older woman took the opportunity and pressed a soft kiss on her friend's cheek. "I appreciate you too, yavrum." My little one, she'd called Sarai in her mother language. It was a term she didn't use easily, but it seemed fitting for the younger woman at this stage of their friendship. "I'll always be here." Because even if Reyhan ended up leaving Covington in search for other things, she wouldn't forget the people she had met and the relationships she'd forged in the small Georgian town.

And then, when Sarai went ahead and tried to explain what had happened between her fiancé and the younger woman, Reyhan still felt like there was more to the story than the brunette was letting on. "He deserved better? What do you mean?" Because to her, it didn't seem like Sarai was the kind of person who would openly play with someone else's feelings or to paint herself as a bad person. During the years she had spent with the food critic, she couldn't remember a single time which Sarai had done that: painted herself as the villain of her own story, so that's why this was so confusing to Reyhan.

As they moved on to another topic, one that apparently was more interesting than discussing Sarai's break up on a deeper level, Reyhan couldn't help but laugh at the younger woman. "I mean... I agree. I think I was too focused on trying to be in relationships that I was missing out on all of the fun." She couldn't, for the life of her, tell Sarai that being on a relationship with the blonde man who had been a constant in her apartment lately hadn't crossed her mind, but at least, she had been having fun with other people, too. "Um... both? I mean... I've been seeing this guy more regularly. He's been coming to the apartment a lot, but I've also been going on dates with women, so, no one can revoke my bisexual card just yet." She laughed for a moment. In all honestly, Reyhan couldn't remember the last time she'd been this happy, this wholesome before. Not only in terms of being sexually satisfied, but also in her career too with signing Walter to JJP and all. There was a soft sigh that escaped her lips before resting her head on Sarai's shoulder for a moment. "It's been really fun. Sarai's face softened at Reyhan's term of endearment—feeling the warmth and affection behind the foreign word. "Yavrum?" she asked, tilting her head curiously. "What does that mean?" She loved learning new things from her friend, especially when it came to her culture and language.

Thinking about Trevor deserving better had her smile faltering slightly. She sighed, absently stroking Gizmo's fur as she gathered her thoughts. "It's just... I feel like I hurt him, you know? Even though I didn't mean to." Her voice was quiet, thoughts of how things went down filling her with regret. "He was always so good to me, and I…” she went quiet, brows pinched together, “I couldn't give him what he needed. What he deserved." She shook her head, trying to push away the guilt that still lingered—leaning against the other for comfort.

Thankfully, as the conversation shifted to her best friend’s dating life, her mood brightened once more. She grinned, playfully nudging her friend with her elbow. "Look at you, playing the field! I'm so proud." She laughed, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "And hey. Bisexuality is a beautiful thing, embrace it. You’re not the only one in that boat, I am too. Women are beautiful. I can’t just jump on dicks when there are all the pretties out in the world." She winked, letting Reyhan know that she fully supported her. 

She instinctively wrapped an arm around her bestie’s shoulder, pulling her close as the rested her head on Sarai's shoulder. She supposed she understood Rey’s fears about catching feelings, especially when you’re trying to not go down that route. "I get that, trust me. It's scary, putting yourself out there like that." Sarai gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze. "But you're strong, Rey. You've got this. And if you do catch feelings, well... that's not always a bad thing, right? Maybe he feels the same too."It wouldn’t be a stretch in her opinion. Only an idiot wouldn’t love her best friend.

"Honestly, I'm not really looking for love right now. After everything with Trevor, I... I'm just not ready." She sighed, absently twirling a strand of hair around her finger. "I don't want to risk hurting someone else the way I hurt him. So for now, I'm focusing on myself." She peered down at Gizmo, still purring contentedly in her lap. "And on this little furball, of course." She grinned, scratching the kitten behind the ears.

“Big brothers can be…a handful at times.” Drew chuckled before taking another sip from his coffee, aware that if he got started on the topic, he’d probably end up complaining about his big brother and while he trusted Sarai enough to do that, he wasn’t in the right frame of mind to do that right now. “Unique way is right,” Drew absentmindedly rubbed the spot on his cheek where Ryan had punched him, wondering if that was in part because of how much is brother couldn’t stand him? Or really because he knew Drew loved him enough to take it and not retaliate? “I think with practice it would become easier, if you had to do that for work or something..” Drew smiled at her before shaking his head, “but instead you get to use the pen as your microphone.” 

Drew didn’t know of course how close Ellie and Sarai were, but when she’d expressed being surprised at knowing they were married—he got his answer. “Yeah, I mean—they got a divorce, at least as far as I know.” That was the hard part, admitting that he may not know everything going on in his own brother’s life right now thanks to the turmoil in their own relationship. “I just—it’s something I shouldn’t talk about because I’ve only heard it from Ryan but I’m going to believe my brother about it,” he sighed before nodding. “I get that, but with him being my brother, it’s hard for me not to pick sides, you know?” For Drew it was simple—Ryan above everyone else. Sure they might have their own issues with one another but that was still his big brother and Drew would always have his back. “I’m sure you’d react similarly, if it was one of your brothers in this type of situation.”  | @saraiayutthaya

Having brothers definitely wasn’t easy. Hers loved her very much, but some of the things they did were judgment inducing for sure. "Mine are a mess to be honest," she said with a laugh—thinking back on some of her brothers' past hijinks. Oh she had a million stories to share about them. “I’m not telling you which one, but one of them shoved a carrot up his nose the other day and we had to call 911.” 

Sarai nodded, listening without being hypercritical. Was she surprised? Yes. She hadn't realized the situation was that serious, though. Still, she didn't want to pry or take sides, especially when she didn't know all the details. "I appreciate you giving me a heads up about the situation. I care about Ellie, but I also understand you wanting to support your brother." He had to. Families always had each other’s backs. 

She paused, taking a sip of coffee as she considered her words carefully. "It's an unfortunate situation all around it seems. I hope they could move forward with no negative feelings one day." Any kind of negativity made her stomach twist, and she wanted nothing to do with it. Wanting to steer the conversation to lighter territory, she asked, "On a happier note, what's the best prank you ever pulled on Ryan growing up? I feel like you've got some good stories there. I know I do…"

"I wouldn't worry much about that if I were you." Taylor shook her head. It still pained her just how much society imposed body standards on women, which would bring about comments such as the one Sarai had made. Alas, she wasn't the younger woman, so she couldn't sit there and act like she knew what had prompted Sarai to say it. "I feel like you'd look beautiful either way. Because, like you've said, you're happy doing what you're doing." And in the end, that is what should matter. Not someone's weight.

The way Sarai used humor amused Taylor. It was nothing new, it wasn't like she hadn't seen this way of charm being used before, but coming from someone who she had such close ties with, it was definitely amusing. "What makes you think I'd take back my invite?" She asked, brow arched as she uncrossed her legs and leaned forward, resting her arms on her knees as she held onto that warm cup of coffee the waitress had brought in. "Do people take back their invites a lot around you?" The green-eyed woman cocked her head to the side. "What a rude thing to do to such pretty little woman." There was a question that danced on the tip of her tongue as she meticulously watched Sarai's every move: are you flirting with me?

Nonsense.

She told herself that much as she leaned back, resting easily against the comfortable chair and sipping on the bitter liquid that filled her cup.

Again, Sarai's words caused Taylor's brow to arch up. No, she wasn't imagining things. She really was flirting, wasn't she? "I have not, no. But with you as my guide, I can't say I'd ever feel inclined to leave the hotel room." The older woman caught herself saying. It came like second nature to her, flirting with beautiful women. Even if said woman had grown up running around her own backyard. Again, Taylor leaned forward, and she was about to say something else when her phone rang.

The professor excused herself for a moment there and headed to the counter while still on her phone to ask for a to-go cup, before she returned to Sarai. "I'm afraid I'll have to cut this meeting short. I need to resolve some things." She seemed as apologetically as she looked. And within reason, as she had barely started to talk to the other woman and was now being forced to leave. "Come to my lecture this Friday. We'll go out in the city afterward. What do you say?" Though there was no malice in her invitation, Taylor wouldn't make any promises. They were both grown women, weren't they? And, from the looks of it, Sarai seemed interested. Taylor inched close, dangerously close to Sarai's face, but made a quick detour to her ear. "I promise I don't bite." She whispered close to the younger woman's ear, before planting a kiss on Sarai's exposed shoulder and straightened up, turning around to leave. / @saraiayutthaya

It was flattering to hear Rain praising her looks. Of course, she didn't put much stock in appearances herself. She was happy and confident in who she was, and that was what mattered most. "I guess I'm lucky then," she responded with a playful grin. "Beauty in all forms, right? As long as I can still enjoy my food tours without turning into a blob, I'll consider it a win."

"I was hoping you wouldn’t. I'd be heartbroken," she teased, leaning in with feigned seriousness. "And yes, it seems like an epidemic around me—invites disappearing like socks in a laundry room. But I suppose my irresistible charm is making you keep yours on the table.” There was something undeniably alluring about the professor that made Sarai stumble over her words a bit. The way Rain leaned in and called her a pretty little woman made her heart skip and her knees go weak. She got the sense the professor was flirting with her, though she couldn't be sure. Was she flirting back? A little. There was no harm in that, right? And for the first time in months, she felt alive again.

The other mentioning not wanting to leave the hotel room with her as a guide had a blush creep up her cheeks. Did she mean they were? No… It couldn’t be. She wouldn’t, right? "If you get the right rooms, you might not want to. Some even give great massages." She quipped, a pout gracing her features. "It’ll be too bad though... I make a pretty fantastic tour guide and I promise, I'll make sure it's worth your while."

Their banter was interrupted by a phone call. “Sure, go on.” She said, her eyes on the woman as Rain took the call. When she came back and told Sarai she had to cut their meeting short, disappointment filled her. As the professor moved in close, whispering in her ear, a shiver run down her spine. The woman’s lips grazing her shoulder didn't help matters. She blinked rapidly, trying to gather her composure. 

"I, uh...yeah, Friday sounds good," she managed to get out, her voice sounding breathier than usual. She wasn't sure what had come over her. Maybe it was just nice to have someone pay her that kind of attention after her breakup. Or maybe it was something more. In any case, as she watched Rain walk away, she found herself very much looking forward to their next encounter.

"Nah, it still tastes like ass." He doubled down, and shook his head, "I'll leave the powers of be to you." He might drink a frapp or something, but outside of that, he just didn't vibe with a cup of coffee. He was more a Monster's guy. "My soul thanks you, and your hard work. I'll keep this in mine at Christmas time." Liam was definitely a big pets guy. Hell, the man even enjoyed being around animals of bigger and more dangerous sizes. He didn't discriminate, they were all babies. "Looks like tomorrow is the winner." He responded, "I have a thing with Amelia on Saturday. So, tomorrow works."

He shrugged, "I mean, I could always dig deeper, but I don't think I care to be smacked today. So, yeah, I'm going to sit with cat lady." It was safe, and while he wasn't about safe often, he could be from time to time. He held his hands up in surrender, "I wouldn't expect anything less. Hell, it's not like you'd be the first one to try." Liam stated, "But be aware, if we're fighting, I like to put on a show. So, expect it to be bingeworthy." He laughed as she backtracked on her statement, "What's that saying, Sarai? No pain, no gain?" He rose a brow at her, "Never told you for a quitter." He was also simply just messy with her.

“You don’t know what you’re missing, my friend.” Sarai shook her head—unable to imagine a life without coffee. "Ooooh... Look at little Liam making plans with girls." She teased, unable to resist giving him a hard time. While she was happy for him, she couldn't pass up the opportunity to poke fun. "You better be nice to her, Liam. I'm not kidding. She's a good person, and I adore her, so be good." Amelia was tough as nails, but every girl had a vulnerable side, and knowing the two’s history together, she didn’t want her friend to experience yet another heartbreak. “Alright, let’s do tomorrow. Whenever you’re free, come on over.” 

“Hey, who are you to call me a quitter? I’m trying to save myself here.” The man was like seven feet tall or something, and although she wasn’t dainty by any means, he still towered over her. Who the hell wanted to get hurt from kicking someone’s tall behind? “Unless…” She allowed the word to trail off, “you get off on letting pretty women go all dominatrix on you. That’s it, isn’t it? That’s your kink? Come on, you can be candid with me, I’m not going to tell anyone,” the next part was uttered under her breath, “just everyone following my blog.” If she didn’t see him as a great friend, she would never imagine teasing him this way. But Liam was like a brother to her. A very tall, giant of a brother.

Taylor smiled back. The petite woman sitting across from her didn't need to know just how unhappy she was to be back in Covington. She didn't need to know that if things worked out just fine, in a few months Taylor would be gone again... even if it was to another satellite city, close to Atlanta. That was, if tenure was on the table for the professor. "Well, for someone who loves eating as much as me, I'd say it's one hell of a job, you know?" And from the looks of it, if it made Sarai smile this brightly, then perhaps the woman was great at her job. No one looked this happy and accomplished in a job they hated. "You look happy while doing it..." She said with a hint of a smile spreading across her fleshy lips. "At least... your micro expressions tell me so." With a smirk, the older woman cocked her head to the side, circling her own face with her index finger, to indicate she was actually talking about Sarai.

As they kept talking, however, Taylor couldn't help but wonder if sweet little Sarai was flirting with her or if she had always been this sassy. They hadn't interacted much back in the day, always seeing her with either Jenna or Lily, but now, as she sat across from the brunette and she mentioned things like 'not wanting to leave the classroom if her professor looked like Taylor', she couldn't help but wonder if she was reading too much into it. "So you're saying my students are only there because I look like this?" Again, the professor motioned her free hand over her face and along her body, then, she shook her head while letting out a heavy sigh. "Damn, I didn't know that getting a PhD early in life and all of those years researching things would serve me nothing. I'm all beauty and no brains!" She retorted with humor as her smirk lasted for a hint of a second on her lips, before being hidden by the cup of coffee the waitress had brought her. "Come by Emory next Friday. I'm giving a lecture on different types of Psychosis, so you can see whether you'll be staying or leaving my classroom." Despite it being a topic most wouldn't be interested, Taylor was intrigued by the younger woman's words. So, almost in a challenging way, she posed the invitation, in hopes to see her there. Besides, it was a lecture open to several courses, so she didn't think Sarai would find it hard to follow.

The more Sarai spoke, however, the more interesting Taylor realized she had become. She was no longer Jenna's younger friend, the one her sister sheltered from the world and loved having sleepovers with. She had grown into this gorgeous, smart, well-traveled, fully-lipped, soft-skinned woman. "Egypt, huh? Damn, Sarai... you've traveled a lot more than I did, I think." Taylor happily ignored the comment on the whole 'home' ordeal, because Covington hadn't been home to Taylor for such a long time. Exotic places, though? Would she be judged if she said the apex between women's thighs? That could count as exotic to some. "I think I'd go with Greece. I went there a couple of years ago with my ex and Athens was lovely. There was something so endearing about the way Rain showed interest in her work. Sarai didn’t even know why she should care or it was important, it just was. "It is a great job. I’m surprised I haven’t ballooned up yet?" With the way she ate, it was a miracle she was still slim. Mama always said she took after papa. The man was still so fit for a sixty-eight year old. “I am. I’ve read that you need to be happy with your job, and I’m doing just that.” If she wasn’t, she wouldn’t ever consider doing this for so long. Her gaze lingered on Rain’s finger, and it led her to wondering if it was as soft as she looked. She blinked a few times—forcing her thoughts from such ridiculous thoughts. 

Leaning back, a light chuckle escaped her lips—amused by the other’s statement. "Oh, definitely. It's all about your looks, of course. The PhD and years of research are just... what, fancy decorations." The cup she held paused midway to her lips as she leaned in slightly, "I’m kidding. I know you’re a smart woman. It’s just a plus that you have your looks on your side as well.” No one could get far in life on looks alone. Unless you were a model or something. “Don’t tempt me. If your invite still stands and I’m not working, I will be there.” The words sounded like a threat, but really, if she were to attend, there was a high possibility she would end up drooling over the professor—lecture be damned.

"I have. Some people spend their money on expensive makeup, I spend mine on vacations.” Her priority was a lot different from most. Sarai didn’t want to travel when she was at retirement age. She wanted to do it now, while she was young and able to move. It would be such a waste to do that when her joints creaked. Just thinking about it had her wincing. “I haven’t been to Greece yet, but that would be on my bucket list, someday. You must have a lot of fun with your ex.” Did her words sound bitter? If it was, she didn’t intend for it to come out that way. “Maybe someday, I’ll be able to go.” She shrugged. A smile flickered on her features once more before another question slipped past her lips. “Have you ever been to Thailand? It’s so beautiful there. It’s been a few years since I’ve been, but maybe we could go together. I could be your personal tour guide.”

It was nice to have the type of job that would allow people to travel this much, and, in Sarai's case, as Lily had told her, it involved food? For someone who loved eating as much as Taylor did, it felt like a dream come true, to go to restaurants and get paid to eat. "Lily said you're a food critic? Is it for a blog, a newspaper...?" Taylor asked curiously, before glancing at one of the servers and placing an order for an Americano with an extra shot of espresso. "I'd love to take you out one of these days to your favorite spots nearby. I've been away for so many years, I don't know what's good and what isn't anymore." She smiled while crossing one leg over the other, her green hues not leaving Sarai's lovely, small face. It made her think of the times she used to braid her hair along with Jenna's. A time in which the girls would invade her room and piss her off by doing so, only to ask Taylor to hang out with them. It's because you're super cool, sis! Jenna had said.

If she could go back in time, she would have enjoyed those moments more.

As the duo started talking about Taylor, she couldn't help but feel like the younger woman was flirting with her? Maybe? It was probably because of the 'pretty professor' comment, because while she didn't consider herself shy, those words were usually used with that connotation with her. "So far, I haven't heard anyone say anything, but they keep coming to the classes, so maybe I'm doing something right." Again, she smiled, noticing a hint of blood rushing to Sarai's cheek at that comment about her job. "Can't say I feed into the teacher x student kink, especially since it might get me fired, but I'm enjoying it." Tay nodded, shifting her attention for a mere second to the waitress who had brought her order. After thanking the woman, her green orbs returned to Sarai. "I'd rather be involved in academia than having a practice. I've also thought about venturing into criminal profiling, but the things I've seen and heard... sometimes they're hard to shake. I can't promise I won't jump on a criminal's throat if they were told to me in person." The brunette chuckled. "Enough about crimes though. New York, Milan, huh? Sarai's cheeks flushed a deeper pink as Rain asked about her job as a food critic. There was something so charming about the way Rain showed interest in her work. "Yeah, Lily's got it right. I write for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and I write reviews for restaurants. It's a fun gig, I get to eat amazing food and then write about my experience." She smiled at Rain's offer to take her out to her favorite spots. Should she be feeling this excited? No. But she couldn’t stop the fluttering in her stomach. "I'd love that. It would be so nice to rediscover the food scene together." She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear shyly. "I know the perfect little French cafe that just opened up downtown. We should check it out."

As the conversation shifted to the other’s teaching, she was once again struck by the other woman's beauty. Maybe it was her intelligence or perhaps it was her confidence. Whatever it was, she found it incredibly attractive. "I'm sure you're an amazing professor. You always were one of the smartest people I knew." And she was also funny. The way she spoke about her students returning to her class, it brought a smile to Sarai’s face. "I’m telling you, it has to be your pretty face," she paused before teasing back, “then again, you are witty. I wouldn’t want to leave you classroom if you were my professor. Kink or not, I would have had a far better time in class.” She had no regrets for saying that. It was far too easy to let the words slip out.

Her smile faltered a little, head nodding at the other’s take on why she chose to teach. If she had a sister who’d been murdered, she didn’t think she would be able to work on the field any longer either. "I can see how you'd be drawn to that field with your background, though I imagine it takes a toll." 

Thankfully, the topic shifted to her favorite travel destinations. She pondered for a moment before making her reply. "New York is always fun, so much energy and so many new restaurants to try. But believe it or not, my favorite so far is Egypt. I mean, I’ve never done a review of the restaurants, but you really have to see the Pyramids. In my opinion, everyone should go at least once in their lifetime." She smiled across the table at Rain, tucking her hair behind her ear again shyly. "But you know, as much as I love traveling, it's always nice to come back home. No place like home.” She took a sip of coffee before asking, “What about you? Have you gone anywhere exotic before?”

Dior laughed lightly at her words. "You're aware that I'm one of the worst cooks ever, right? Ahalya and I almost burned water last time she visited me. We laughed about it, but it was also very eye opening." She murmured with a soft laugh. To be fair though, Dior felt like she was incredibly talented in several other aspects of her life, therefore not knowing how to cook was a small price to pay for all the good things that she had. "Agreed with the hangovers though. I haven't been able to handle them since I turned 30. Oh drinking is so nice, but it's also so overrated."

She loved hearing her close friends or people in general talking about their passions, so hearing Sarai talk so fondly of her profession always brought a smile to Dior's face. "Oh, you're so lucky. Getting paid to eat must feel so nice." She teased lightly, grinning widely back at her friend as they kept walking around the grocery store. "You're sweet, I'll still be doing my regular gigs around town in the summer too, so you'll be seeing my face often." She shook her head though, slipping an arm around her friend's shoulders in a side hug. "I could never do that! Not to flex but I've been kinda famous for a little bit now and you guys haven't even noticed, trust me."

"You and Ahalya trying to burn water, now that's a sight I wish I'd seen. Don't be so hard on yourself, cooking just takes practice. But if I were you, I wouldn’t be too sad. I'm sure you have many other talents that more than make up for not being a chef." Dior excelled in so many aspects of life—her musical gift for one. Not knowing how to cook wouldn’t diminish she was as a person. “Hangovers are the worse at this age.” Sarai couldn’t deny it, she was lucky for getting paid to eat. "It definitely has its perks, but it's not all fun and games. I have to be objective in my reviews, and try to play nice, even when the food is mediocre.” She chuckled. “But yes, I do enjoy the tasty parts of the job."

Hearing Dior would still be performing around town filled Sarai with excitement. She would love to watch her friend light up the stage with her performance. "I'm so glad, you can bet I will be there front and center," she said, giving the other’s shoulders an affectionate squeeze. "I see clearly the fame hasn't gone to your head at all…" she added with a laugh—clearly teasing.
