BIOGRAPHY:
addiction tw, overdose tw.
Born into a huge family, Dior Patricia Carter grew up in a warm home filled with laughs, homemade food, hardworking parents and two siblings that she adored. She didn’t really struggled with the middle child syndrome, as from a young age, Dior gave herself the role of caretaker in their family and therefore always felt like she was more mature than she ever really needed to be.
She was the definition of a flower child, always a smile on her face, always ready to perform acts of service for even strangers even as she grew up and started high school, there was no way for people to see the middle Carter without a warm smile on her face.
Where her brother, Jameson, was more academically inclined, Dior was more into less structure and more creativity. She was seven when she picked up her first instrument after spending some time begging her parents for one, but the connection to that instrument was immediate and soon, she was learning her favorite songs, singing them and playing in the comfort of her bedroom.
She didn’t think too much of her talent, until she became a teenager and began to write songs. Writing was her escape, the only way she ever let out her negative thoughts, her confusing feelings. It was such a healthy way to deal with her demons, to continue to be the ray of sunshine that everyone had always knew her as.
It was also a way to process feelings, emotions and love. Which as a teenager, she had more than a handful of those and boy, did she write about her first kiss, her first heartbreak, her first love. By the time she was a senior in high school, Dior was fronting her own band. She was more into playing guitar than she was into singing or even writing.
And when graduation came and went and everyone expected the talented soon-to-be-a-star young woman to leave, she surprised everyone by staying home and going to UGA, a university only an hour away from Covington and her family. Just how she liked it. Not even her first love leaving town was enough to make her want to leave.
Dior never dreamed of touring and being a rockstar, she loved music and she loved playing but she could never see herself traveling everyday, not seeing her people whenever she wanted to, never even thought that she could stay away from Covington long enough. Instead, she dreamed of showing people what music could do for them. But despite this, after getting her degree, Dior packed up her bags and followed the same man that she’d let go years prior to New York. Her stay there though, was short-lived as only six months later, heartbroken, she was back in Covington.
She began teaching when she got back, and began performing at bars and on the street by herself. She was back with her family and back to the place that she had always called home. Years later, Dior still remained the caretaker in her family, she would check on her parents, check on her sister, text Jameson when he decided to move. She got another band together, her life started to make sense again.
But then her ex came back, and just as he did, Dior began to notice that her sister wasn’t okay. She wasn’t herself and for the first time since she had met him, she put her feelings aside and focused on saving her younger sister. She had to let go of her own dreams in order to help someone that she adored. Their parents helped her, but for the most part, it was Dior who constantly helped the youngest Carter; she moved her into her apartment, checked in on her sobriety and even with all the efforts, her sister never recovered, not until her overdose.
That was the turning point for Dior, it was clear no matter how much she wanted to help her, she couldn’t. She had to be strong enough to send her sister to rehab, to understand that she wasn’t good enough to help her out. So she did and now she fights herself constantly, wonders if it’s right to send her away.
Since then, her life has slowly began to make sense though and Dior has realized the amount of effort and time that she had spent not ever focusing on herself. She would do it all again, but with Jameson in town, her sister recovering and a nephew to look after, she feels like she can breathe again for the first time in years.
RANDOM FACTS
Like her siblings, Dior got her middle name from one of her father's favorite crime authors: Patricia Highsmith, who wrote a little novel called The Talented Mr. Ripley
Although she owns an apartment of her own, Dior spends a lot of time at her parents, siblings or other relatives' homes and uses her place as more of her creative space than anything else
She cannot cook to save her life and pretty much lives off takeout, eating out and pre-cooked meals, and also lots of sandwiches
Dior has only had one serious, tumultuous and wild relationship all her life. It's been on-and-off, in between hookups, flings since she was a junior in high school.
She will literally fly or drive anywhere just to see her favorite bands in concert
One of her goals is to make the Covington music scene grow, so she's recently been getting very involved with that.
The name of her band is Holy Sing Batman, a fun name she came up with after one of her students compared her "double life" to Batman's after seeing her perform at a festival.
Said band is very much in the folk / alternative spectrum, think their sound is like: The Civil Wars, Rhiannon Giddens, Angus and Julia Stone
