GROVER WEARING A RASTA CAP IS CULTURAL APPROPRIATION
Like why is nobody talking about this? Like the fandom has called out Rick for stereotyping cultures but what about the only case I have seen of cultural appropriation and people ignoring it! So Grover, my main victim- I mean subject, is what we gonna be talking about and how this counts as cultural appropriation.
1. Rick didn’t do his research. Rasta caps are made for people with dreadlocks and mostly only used when men pray since hair is very powerful in Rastafarian culture. Using a Rasta cap to hide something that a character is ashamed of is straight mockery of this culture.
2. Grover is white. Now you may be asking “what is the problem with someone being white and Rastafarian?” so let me explain. Rastafarians believe that Jesus wasn’t white but black and Africa is the paradise of the whole world and that they shall not comb or cut their TIGHTLY COILED hair so it shall give them power and loc together so the chances of meeting a white Rastafarian is basically nonexistent.
3. Grover is deemed as a “nature freak”. Another stereotype attached to Rastafarians, they are hippies who are nature lovers. NOT TRUE AT ALL. It just states in their bible that they are not to eat anything that doesn’t nutrition the body which includes meat does not make them nature freaks.
4. Grover hat is deemed as ugly. It is one thing to appropriate but it is another thing to describe a very important spiritual object like trash. That is like if Grover was a girl and instead of wearing a Rasta cap he wore a hijab and it was treated like and deemed trash, he would get a lot more backlash but somehow this is no biggie.
5. The fan art. Oh god this gonna get messy. Let me show you what is not cultural appropriation:
Now let me show you what is:
So your telling me everybody tried to cancel Rick for the Piper wearing feather problem but I have seen nobody bring this up? I am calling that BS.
6. People participate in this when cosplaying. You are doing the same thing as the author, being ignorant and not doing your research.
7. I HAVE SEEN NOBODY TALK ABOUT THIS. As a person who has an uncle who is Rastafarians I have seen the discrimination against him. He gets stares in the streets, spit upon, and curses by tourists and locals. It is just sad that nobody talks about THIS in general fiction and none fiction. People getting there dreadlocks which they have grown their whole life cut off because it is deemed naughty and unruly.
So I am begging you please talk about this topic because it just saddens me.
Also big Thank you for reading this whole post because I know it is kinda long. Thank u so much and stay safe!
