Women in the MACA, the largest prison in Ivory Coast. In the middle of the large expanse that is home to 4500 male inmates, you find a small colourful building with hopeful words painted on the windows. “Travail, Education, Ensemble”

There, the women’s quarters are run like a multinational company with rules, timetables, moneymaking tasks and hierarchy. At the head of it all, chief inmate Bintu who allegedly poisoned her husband but denies it.

It takes only a second to see the difference with the chaos that reigns in the males’ quarters.
