"Fantastic" Frank McCay! I wonder what Frank would do to make kids laugh instead of scream?

[Flashback] Meetin' Johnnayyyy
Delicately Johnny pulled the page out of the book, tearing along the perforated line until he held the severed page in hand. Reluctant to fold it, he instead slid it into one of his folders. He wanted to show the guys later, he was sure they’d be just as impressed.
"I have no problem modeling," Johnny said with another smug look of achievement. "I did some for an art class in high school. It was pretty fun. Of course, none of the students there were anything like you—You have real promise"
It was probably just his ego speaking at that point, but Johnny liked the attention paid to him by almost every monster on campus. He deserved it, after all, being at the top of his tier in Scaring.
"So what do you do when you’re not busy filling sketchbooks with your talent?" he schmoozed, leaning against the table again.
She was beyond pleased to see that he seemed to truly appreciate her work. Not many people did these days. Most people saw her talent as just a neat party trick, they didn't see it as the unique skill it actually was. Kenzie smiled and bit her lip, perching her chin on her knuckles.
She laughed, lightly nibbling on the tip of her pencil. "Oh, you're full'a noise." She said jokingly in response to his compliment.
"What do I do?" Kenzie scoffed and rolled her eyes."WELL, I'm workin' part time at a fashion design college with my ma. Though callin' it PART TIME ought'a be illegal. I'm tellin' ya, Johnny, if I hafta sew one more hem, hear ONE MORE WORD outta those ungrateful little shmucks they call models, I'm gonna freakin' plotz! They're workin' me to the bone ova' there and my ma takes half my pay!"
Her skin and fins had grown redder and redder as she continued to spiel, and she was now completely crimson. Kenzie sighed and rolled her worry-ridden shoulders, forcing a smile once again. "Oh! And I do makeup for people's special occasions sometimes."
[Standing on her bed, rolled up magazine in her hand]
"Alright, where'd you go, ya filthy little mistake of na--"
[One huge roach crawls across her foot.]
[A BLOOD CURDLING SHRIEK IS HEARD FROM HER ROOM, having fallen off of the bed and onto her nightstand, smashing a lamp and taking down a poster in the process]
[Flashback] Meetin' Johnnayyyy
Johnny’s interest piqued the moment she showed him the page she had been doodling on, enchanted that she had seen fit to sketch his likeness. He looked amazing from every angle of course, and Kenzie certainly captured his good looks. Spot on, in fact. He pulled the sketchbook from her hands and admired the page for a moment, smug smirk creeping up his face.
"Well, then," he said, "we wouldn’t want to potentially damage those talented hands of yours. I’d hate if you chipped a claw."
He glanced back down at the page, tail wagging a bit more as he took in the strong, smooth lines. It was just a sketch, but it looked great. Johnny didn’t have an artistic bone in his body; his mother had all but despaired when he failed to learn a single musical instrument throughout middle and high school. He always made a point to praise others for their talents.
"This is really good," he said. "Mind if I keep it?"
"Pfft, tell me about it! Ya know how much I hafta' pay each month to have these babies filed?" Kenzie laughed and folded her arms on the table, flipping a hair fin out of her face.
"Nah, go ahead! I've got sketchbooks full of em back in my dorm." She smiled, then sputtered as she realized what that sounded like. "Not of YOU, of course, I just meant that I've got sketchbooks full of just doodles in general, ya know?" The purple hue returned to her skin and hair and she bit her lip.
"But maybe I can draw ya again sometime? I can do much betta' than that and you're pretty fun to doodle, I gotta say."
[Flashback] Meetin' Johnnayyyy
"I used to play football in high school," Johnny admitted, withdrawing his hand back across the table. "I was quarterback, actually. Did pretty well for myself, and I would have been able to score a full ride to Fear Tech on a sports scholarship if I hadn’t had my heart set on the Scare Program at MU.”
He shrugged as though he were being modest about it. He hadn’t joined the MU team due to his intense desire to excel in his classes, and football practice didn’t leave a lot of time for practicing anything else.
"I still scrimmage with the guys and anyone else who wants to mess around," he grinned. "Maybe you’d like to ‘get your hands dirty’ sometime. You could always be on my team.”
Kenzie laughed and flipped her sketchbook open, sifting through it in search of an empty page. "Football, huh? Now how'd I guess?" She listened as he spoke, sketching a few random figures onto the blank sheet, trying to come across as bored, even though she was far from it. Her mother always taught her not to appear overly interested in a guy, even if she was. Keep him baited, reel him in, then give him some slack, then reel him in.
"I appreciate the offer, but Johnny, sweetheart, when I said I'm willin' to dirty up these paws, football wasn't anywhere on the agenda. Sports aren't really my thing!" Her pink eyes flickered up from the page to meet his.
"Unless you were talkin' figuratively, then I might take ya up on that offer." She snickered and turned the sketchbook to face him, the once blank page now showcased several small, but wonderfully detailed sketches of Johnny himself. "Anyways, no sports for me! I'm more of an artsy fartsy kinda gal, see?"
[Flashback] Meetin' Johnnayyyy
"Not every monster was meant to be a Scarer," Johnny said, leaning his elbow on the edge of the table. "Take the difference between you and I—I’m built for Scaring. Horns, claws, and a pretty impressive set of jaws, plus, it’s practically in my blood. There was just no way I was going to try for anything else.”
He reached across the table and tapped a claw against Kenzie’s hand, and her fur was definitely as soft as it looked.
"I wouldn’t expect you to be a Scarer," he smirked. "You’re too….hmm, soft. Plush. You look like the kind of monster who prefers to be taken care of than do any actual work…not that I think you’re actually like that.”
Kenzie smirked as she took note of his teeth, horns, and claws as he mentioned them. They certainly were impressive little accessories, she had to admit. "Hm." she hummed. "Yeah, I can't really see ya with any other major, anywa-"
She paused as his claw touched her hand, which quickly curled into a fist. "Hah! You can bet cha horns I love bein' taken care of, but that doesn't mean I'm not willin' to get my hands dirty from time to time!" Kenzie laughed happily. "Take that however ya like."
"So, aside from scaring and stuff, do ya have any other talents or hobbies? Like sports or somethin'? "
[Flashback] Meetin' Johnnayyyy
He liked her.
She had a charming sort of speech impediment, but she also had a good attitude and was forward and to the point. He liked a monster with confidence, who wasn’t afraid to talk more than was socially acceptable at any given time. His tail wagged gently from side to side when she picked her hand out of his, and that blush did not go unnoticed.
"Film studies," he grinned. "That’d be the main reason I haven’t seen you outside of parties—the building for those classes is across campus. I’m a Scaring major, minoring in psychology of fear. You probably knew that, too."
"God, I know, it's like we're out in freakin' Limbo over there." She gestured idly in the direction of Liberal Arts building.
"Pfft, 'course I knew, ya might as well have 'Scarin' major' tattooed across your face!" Kenzie chuckled, resting her chin in her palm.
"I'd love to be a Scarer, but who am I kiddin'? Only thing scary about me is my temper and my ability to scarf down six trays'a sushi in under ten minutes. Though I guess that's more impressive than it is scary, dependin' on how ya look at it!" She sighed.
Kenzie crossed her legs, her skin fading to a light turquoise as she began to unwind. She had to admit- though she hated to- that talking to Johnny was rather intimidating. But she was too lost in those violet eyes to care at the moment.
Ooooh, looks tasty!
Film studies major?? How have we not met yet?? *squeals happily, hugs her* I'm Amelia Johnson, and I can already tell that we are going to be, like THE bestest best friends, ever!
"Get outta town!" she gasped excitedly, lightly shoving the girl's shoulder. "It's probably because I skipped half the classes this semester." She giggled. "Kenzie Berkovi-" her introduction was cut short by Amelia's tight hug, to which she responded with a laugh. "Berkovits!" she continued. "We gotta hang out sometime or somethin'! You can text, right?"
[Flashback] Meetin' Johnnayyyy
"Not officially, no," Johnny smirked, reaching across the table for a handshake; always a handshake, it left an impression, his grandfather always said. Firm and tight, so they don’t forget you.
"Johnny Worthington, but you already knew that," he said. "Sorry, but I’m not sure I’ve ever heard your name before; Seen you hang out with the PNKs fairly often, but beyond that I’m pretty sure I would have remembered your name if I had gotten a hold of it."
She was gorgeous, just the sort of monster he liked to be seen with. Hardly scary, but looks were deceiving, and if she really was hanging out with the PNKs, then he was confident their personalities might have rubbed off on her.
"'Course I do, your name echoes through the quad 'round the clock." Kenzie let out a small chuckle, her skin and hair-fins already beginning to take on a more purplish hue; her form of blushing. A curse, really.
"Yeah, the girls n' I are pretty close, I guess ya could say. When I'm not stealin' their clothes, they're snatchin' mine." She snerked. "Name's Kenzie Berkovits!" She reached a violet hand over to shake his. "Film studies major, hate every wakin' second of it, yadda yadda yadda. Nice to finally meet ya, Mista' Worthingon."
The corners of her mouth turned upward in a sly grin as she finally removed her hand from his.
[Flashback] Meetin' Johnnayyyy
The Quad was packed with students hustling along to their next class, trying to get back to their dorms, or hanging out with friends during a period break. It was a great area to be in, with its trees and sloping hills that led down to the School of Science and football field, and Johnny could never help his penchant to take it all in as if he owned it.
And in a way, he did.
He was the top student at the school with the highest grades and president of the best fraternity on campus. Everyone knew his name and everyone knew who he was. It was great, being popular and well-loved.
There were always those trying to steal his spotlight, though. As usual, without fail, every time he found himself among a crowd of admirers, someone across the Quad let out an ungodly (but impressive) shriek, causing nine different heads to turn away from Johnny, and that didn’t sit too well with him.
Of course he was curious, and so with a small word excusing himself from the gathering of monsters, he headed across the grounds, looking for the monster who couldn’t bottle up their emotions.
It wasn’t all that hard to spot her, either. She sat by herself at one of the picnic tables scattered across campus, staring down at a sketchbook with a medusa-esque gaze he could only assume intended to force her drawing to finish itself.
"Looks like you’re missing something there, Killer," Johnny schmoozed, inviting himself to sit down right across from the monster, who was someone he could only barely remember seeing before, hanging out with the PNKs.
Kenzie groaned and slapped her sketchbook shut, hiding her face in her palms with a sigh of defeat. "'Enter the design contest,' they said, 'it'll be tons'a fun' they said!" She muttered to herself through clenched teeth as she massaged her temples. "The only fun I'm gonna have is when I tear those morons a new one for ever gettin' me caught up in this mishegas in the FIRST place!"
Kenzie continued to rant under her breath, a string of profanities spewing from her mouth as she recalled more assignments that were due within the next few days.
As she removed her hands from her face to reach for another pencil from her backpack, she was shocked to find none other than Johnny Worthington sitting right across from her. She gasped lightly and leaned back a bit.
"Jeez, ya nearly scared the fur off'a me!" She said, putting a hand to her chest, then laughed a bit as he spoke. "Feh! I'll tell ya what I'm missin' alright, what I'm missin' is my patience." She rolled her eyes and leaned over to grab her a pencil from her backpack. "You're Johnny, right? I don't think we've ever officially met."
Meetin' Johnnayyyy
Finally, a freakin' break. Although she'd only attended two classes so far that day, Kenzie felt as though she'd been studying her tail off for days on end. She and Crystal DuBois, one of her closest friends, sat at a picnic table in the quad as the rest of the PNKs flitted about, socializing and passing out invitations for the upcoming sorority party.
Sketchbook open, Kenzie sketched furiously, various squiggles and scratches forming what appeared to be a dress design. "No, no, no, wrong, wrong, WRONG!" she shouted, angrily ripping the sheet out and crumpling it up. "I swear to Fitz, Crystal, if I hafta draw one more stinkin' dress I'm gonna rip my FINS OUT, YA HEAR ME?"
Crystal merely rolled her eyes. "I think everyone on campus heard you, Kenzie."
Kenzie snarled and gripped her pencil tightly, successfully cracking it in half. "KEEP SASSIN' ME, YA LITTLE SHMUCK, I'LL--" The monstress quickly stopped herself and sighed, rubbing her temples as her skin began to turn a darker shade of fuchsia. "Listen, Crys, I've got like FIFTY deadlines to meet today alone and my hide is really chappin'. You go ahead with the girls, I'll catch up with you later, alright?" Crystal laughed a bit and nodded, leaning over to give her fuming monster a kiss on the cheek. "Whatever you say! Just try not to stress yourself out too much, red isn't a very good color on you."
And with that, she was off, leaving Kenzie to her marinate in her angst. Without a pencil.
