my takeaway from one piece live action is that, oda said that he took this chance because the quality of cgi in current industry could make it feasible to adapt his manga now and yet the actual show has so much practical effects, they build the physical sets, the actors did their own stunts, the camera work mimicked anime’s. yes the cgi and special effects help immensely but the fact that they did all of these on top of cgi work just proves how much the team behind the show care about the IP and are One Piece superfans who are respectfully knowledgeable.

one of my favorite things about one piece live action: it doesn't try to "fix" the outfits or the gimmicks or anything to make them "cooler". the weird cat dude is still wearing that weird cat outfit!!! they fucking hiss!! buggy is somehow more buggy than he is in the original!!! they didn't look at one piece and decide that it would be better without the camp, they instead went all in on the goofy, silly, cartoonishness and it works so so well i love it

It has an OFFICIAL HOLIDAY IN JAPAN TO CELEBRATE IT'S SERIALIZATION. ONE PIECE DAY, JULY 22ND.

It has a world record for best selling manga series in history (that it beat ITSELF IN YEARS LATER)

It surpassed Batman, and is only just behind Superman as the best selling comic in history, and Superman has decades of history before it (starting 1938, OP started 1997), with Superman selling 600mil and OP selling 510mil copies

It's also just behind Harry Potter in sales numbers, with HP selling over 600mil

In the next decade, it is entirely possible that One Piece will become the best selling book series of all time, novel, comic, manga, or otherwise

*note: those are the most accurate sales numbers i could find, with 100% accurate sources for Superman and HP's 600mil sales hard to pin down.

I know people have all sorts of opinions on how Garp is handled in the live action but, for me, I just find him hilarious. Like, from the perspective of someone familiar with the show and knowing Luffy and Garp's relationship, Garp's expressions after learning what Luffy is up to in the early episodes are funny!

Garp, episode 1: *after being told a pirate with a straw hat robbed a marine base* There's more than one straw hat in the world, it doesn't HAVE to be Luffy.

Coby, episode 2: The pirate's name was Luffy 😔

Garp: *speedrunning the five stages of grief* Goddammit.
