Garner Holt Productions has a new animatronic Abraham Lincoln bust. It’s set to be part of a series called “Living Faces of History” – not necessarily headed to a Disney theme park near you.
This video is less “Hey, look, it’s Abraham Lincoln!” and more “Hey, look what kind of faces this thing can make!” but it’s still impressive.

First off, the range of motion and fluidity is amazing here, and second off, this really drives home how important subtlety and restraint are in animating human characters in robotic form, given how easily the expressions here range from stunningly convincing in terms of solemnity and gentle humor, which you would want in this type of application, to like roboAbe is high out of his mind, or wacky and crazy eyed, or will straight up fucking kill you. It has seamless transitions and very little separating how quickly the face changes or expressions amplified beyond a desired level, demonstrating the need for care and detailed planning in what looks natural in the art form of performing robots designed to look human.
