Alright forgive the lack of cohesion here im writing it on the floor of a hallway, but like
the fact that Satoshi and Goh donāt have the same goal is kind of intrinsic to what makes their dynamic, particularly as a ship but in general too, so good.
Something I see people point out when criticizing the show is that āSatoshiās already seen all these PokĆ©mon before why does he careā and it makes me so sad because theyāre missing the point! Thereās a lot of scenes youāll find where Goh catches something and Satoshi praises him for it, and the wording is almost something like āgood for you, goh!ā Because itās not about Satoshi, this is Gohās goal. But what makes this dynamic so good is that Satoshi praises him anyway. Because they Care about each other and their goals!! And while catching everything is no longer something Satoshi pursues, he wants to cheer on Goh!! Thatās really sweet and legitimately something very human??
Like I know for a Fact I have friends who I donāt share certain interests with. One of my friends Loves this DND podcast and I've never listened to it! But when he tells me about the plot or shows me art he made or something, I fucking listen!!!!! Because I care about my friends and what they like!! And I think a lot of the people reading this do too. I donāt like tangled that much, but my sister does, and seeing good stuff about it makes me happy because I think sheād like it! And on the inverse, thereās this! I talked to my friend about this show and because of how I felt about it, he became a little interested, and now I send him screencaps of it at midnight and cry!
and thats what's happening with goh!!!
Like listen, Goh was always going to be a perfect match for Satoshi narrative wise. Meta wise, he's filling a roll that was typically filled by 2 people at least and 5 at most. So he compliments and contrasts Satoshi, of course he does. He was *made* to compliment Satoshi, to show off his best traits and fill in gaps for things he doesn't have. both in personality (i.e, goh being slightly more pessimistic to offset Satoshi's relentless positivity), and in narrative purpose (goh catches pokemon so that satoshi can focus on battling and the show still shows off a decent amount of pokemon to get kids invested in buying cards for 15$ at a walmart). And this is all going both ways, Satoshi fills in for Goh's gaps, Satoshi contrasts and compliments Goh!
So they don't have the same goal, because it'd be boring if they did. Because the relationship is that much stronger and wonderful if they don't share the precise same interests but they enjoy watching the other succeeded. Goh was not interested in battling before he met Satoshi. That's so important and I feel like we forget it too much. Goh saw battling as a Means to and End and had no interest in it at all. But because of Satoshi?? He gets so excited for his battles and cheers him on so much!! They even train together on occasion!
It's really sweet, Goh's character means so much to me.

Small rant for the recent journeys episode:
Thank you Pokemon Journeys for giving Goh some actual character development. Although in my opinion, itās really late for this development and itās about time heās really gotten some. This episode was perfect for putting this out there for Goh. We know Goh is a timid guy, who mostly likes to stay with himself, he isnāt a team player yeah. But Gary was spot on in this episode. I felt like Gary really struck it in to Goh, that selfishness will seriously get you nowhere. #1 Poke Tutor
Iāll admit though, this episode was really overwhelming. By the time I finished the episode I was a bit irritated at Goh for screwing up the battle for everyone. They seriously could of had a chance, but eh that articuno did seem a bit busted anyway. But otherwise it was a pretty good development for Goh. Cant wait to see more from Project Mew.
Oh and, Tokio was great here too but I felt like his re-introduction wouldāve been better in a different episode. He had some good defense though.
Poor ash throughout this whole thing, imagine seeing conflict between 2 of your best friends.

No.
All right, well... maybe I shouldn't state that as a fact when it's not like I know for sure. š This post could end up aging very badly, in fact, but I have no problem admitting I'm wrong when I'm wrong.
I just don't think this is one of those times. š
I've already written extensively as to why I believe Journeys/PM2019 could very well be the new norm going forward. You can read that here if you'd like. This is going to be more straight to the point.
PokƩmon Journeys broke a number of patterns/traditions the anime has followed consistently since it began:
Isn't set in the newest region at the time (Galar).
Ash's traveling companion isn't based off of a playable character in the newest game or a NPC from the game (Sword and Shield).
Ash doesn't pursue the regional gym challenge. An alternate means of challenging the champion is created specifically for the anime.
PokƩmon GO continues to receive updates and exists alongside the traditional games. It remains extremely profitable and popular (source). Goh (and his goal/catching style) was introduced to promote/represent PokƩmon GO. The style of gameplay (and other aspects of the app) are sure to continue to be represented in the anime, alongside the traditional games.
Furthermore, previous traveling companions were tied to their respective gens. With the exception of Misty and Brock, traveling companions are changed out with each new gen. Goh isn't tied to a specific gen, and as for Misty and Brock, that exception actually works in Goh's favor as that means just as they remained a part of the anime for an extended period of time, so can Goh.
Goh is the first of Ash's companions to catch all three starters from the newest region at the time. The anime could easily repeat that.
None of this may mean anything and come November or so, the anime could go in an entirely different direction.
Or... the current format could continue, and with it, characters like Goh, could remain a part of the anime.
It's hard not to worry that Journeys/PM19 may be concluding and I'm right there will all of you, but there's enough of an argument to be made that this saga will continue on as there is it will end. Don't give up hope. š
Also Pokemon has been been following fan expectations. For example when people complained more and more about the Pokemon games being stale ever since generation 6 and that they wanted a Pokemon game to be new and fresh again, they listened. When Breath of the Wild came out, the fans were arguing how they wanted a Pokemon game to be just like that, and we ended up getting Legends Arceus and Gen 9 in that style.
If fans hadn't actively seaked out a Pokemon game like Breath of the Wild we probably wouldn't have gotten one, or not as soon as we did.
Goh has become a fan favorite. Despite all the "goh hate" we might see, Goh is actually one of the most popular Ash companions. Seeing as Pokemon actively listens to its fans now, they most likely won't have Goh disappear. In fact, Pokemon brought back so many of Ash's previous companions, and even multiple times in the season - like Dawn and the Alola gang - showing that they are willing to bring back and keep companions that have become a fan favorite.
I rlly love these 2 ppl for this post since I've been kinda down bc a lot of ppl said that journeys is to end soon especially with the new op like what eternalstargazer said, "hints of finality". Pokemon Journeys has been such a big big part of my life and even though knowing each pokemon series (as of S&M) ends at 3 seasons, I feel like it's too short for journeys which isn't set in a particular region and they're going around each region discovering new things. If anything, I still want to wake up looking forward to every friday, to seeing the characters I love most and watching this show which has brought me so much happiness and comfort. This whole thread made me feel hopeful they're gonna be around for a bit longer because I'll be honestly speaking, even if it's just a kids show, it has impacted my life so much.

This post is purely self indulgent, but the newest pokemon op has been living rent free in my head for 2 days and I just had to jot down all my thoughts. There are SO many parallels and symbolism present to show how far Satoshi, Gou, and Koharu have come in the anime, based on direct comparisons in the past openings to the present. This is going to be a long post, so the full analysis is below the cut so as not to fill your dashes with an unescapable SatoGou ride.

Now, the thing I can assume is that Gou was wearing the armor and it broke bc āoh im turning tinyā yes im tired BUT YEAH the point is if Gou was the only one SHOWN to have the armor on (when Ash was pointing to dialga and palkia) BUT KOHARU TOO ALSO HAVING THOSE BROKEN PARTICLES AROUND HER does that mean.
We might get both evil Gou and Koharu.
Might be tripping but its a possibility
Next thing I wanna touch up is about how //probably// Satoshi and Gou never met in that alternate universe. Just how many things changed just because neither of them was in each otherās lives? See we might have a possibility of Gou being on the bad side bc I dont even think Satoshi and Gou met over there like theres a reason why their meeting was fated in the //canon world// like Arceus do be doing weird shit to them what you doing š and theres so many things that could have made Gou snap thus probably joining Team Rocket.
AND THEN THERES KOHARU. How? And why? Reasons I could think of is how much her classmates look to her as the professorās daughter and stuff? Yeah that. Also the fact that her friend probably just turned evil and rumours also could be spreading around yknow? Crazy shit
Or maybe its just Gou alone who knows im not confident about the idea and then questioned myself why am I typing this BUT I MADE 2 WHOLE PARAGRAPHS so im just gonna post this anyways, take it how you like!! I wanna hear what you guys think :)
