Kazumi was always a fan of the colors, while you enjoyed the breezy feeling from being ย up so high. You never realized how little of the sky you actually got to see until you moved to Hyogo.
Now, on days like this, driving along the mountainside in the early mornings was your favorite pastime. Today, you hadnโt planned on going for a drive until a text from Hikari awoke you. It was a bummer youโd be stuck with some random for the biggest assignment of the school year, but it wasnโt like you were lacking in the intelligence department.
After you had gotten back from your drive, you put together a breakfast for Aunt Mai. Just some fluffy pancakes and cut up strawberries should do, enough to fill her up. Then, you left a small note and took off for school.
There was only one downside to your love for cruising. Gas. You had completely forgotten to fill up your tank the night before, and it didnโt help that you emptied almost all of it on your leisure ride this morning. If you stopped to fill it, youโd be late to first period. But you knew if you didnโt stop, your car would probably give out on the way to school. You just hoped your teacher would understand.
The halls were already empty by the time you got there, but you were glad that nobody had to see you shuffling across the school at 8:30 in the morning. You slow right before you make it to the door to compose yourself, huffing out a breath and straightening your skirt. You turn into the doorway, trying to avoid the eyes on you.
โAhh, glad you finally made it, y/n. Please have a seat, Iโm assigning partners now.โ You nod politely toward your teacher, Kada-sensei, before bee-lining for the only empty table. You take a seat and keep your eyes low, trying not to glance and a group of girls eyeing you from across the classroom. As your teacher continues to call out pairs, you realize sheโs grouping by table partners. You let out a sigh of relief at the empty seat to your right.
Suddenly, thereโs a soft knock at the door, despite it being propped open. The girls who were just staring at you now had their eyes fixated on the figure leaning against the doorway.
โSunarin, youโre late.โ Kada puts a hand on her hip ย and raises an eyebrow at the boy. He lets out a small chuckle and walks into the classroom. All eyes trail after him.
โAh, at least I showed up, Kada-san.โ She clicks her tongue and shakes her head.
โTake a seat, Iโm assigning partners now.โ She nods towards your table, at the empty chair next to you. You take a breath and turn toward you left, staring intently out the window. You hear whispering across the classroom, then a girl speaks up.
โRin! You can sit here!โ You look over to a girl with bright red hair waving a hand towards a newly empty chair. Though the table was obviously only fit for two people, it was swarming with girls. One of them is sitting on the edge of the table, happily swinging her feet. The redhead briefly glances at you, smirking, before she grins at the boy.
โAiko, you are already partnered with Sai. Sai, please refrain from sitting on the tables..โ Sai huffs and reluctantly sits back down next to Aiko. The boy, whoโs still standing at the front of the class, scoffs at the girl's antics and starts walking towards you. โY/n & Sunarin.โ You bite down on your tongue in annoyance. He looks at you, an uninterested expression on his face. His tie is loose, backpack hanging over his shoulder. He sits down as Kada begins going over the details of your assignment.
โMachida-san, is it?โ You glance over and furrow your brows at him, giving him a confused look. He smirks, โRintarou.โ He holds out his hand. You look down at his hand, then at his face. Now you can kind of see why the girls seemed to be fawning over him. Your expression is indifferent as you shake his hand and turn back towards the board. Out of the corner of your eye you can see the groups of girls glaring in your direction.
โThe research outline of your project will be due on Sunday, at midnight, in time for you to discuss on Monday. Please remember that this is a paired assignment, and your entire grade will rely on it. Both individuals must provide acceptable amounts of work, otherwise, both will be docked points.โ Kada-sensei highlights this info on the board, while a majority of the class begins to protest. She turns and raises her hand to silence them. โBecause this project is not the only thing we will be doing in class, you are expected to work on it on your own time. This includes on weekends and after school. I expect those who participate in extracurricular activities to keep up.โ
Suna groans, loud enough for Kada to hear. โSunarin, do you have something to say?โ She turns toward your table, waiting expectantly.
โNo maโam.โ Suna gives her a smile.
โGood, as captain of the volleyball team, I expect you to be able to manage your time wisely.โ She turns back toward the board and continues talking.
Great, the biggest assignment of the year, not to mention your final grade, relies on some jock with a fanclub, who looks like heโs about to fall asleep 15 minutes into class.
3 minutes later you look over to see Suna with his cheek pressed into the desk, a puddle of drool forming on the table. Oh yeah, you think, thisโll be great.
