Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. - Matthew 4:1-4 KJV

Everyone faces temptation everyday. It may be something as unimportant as having an extra piece of candy, or skipping exercise, but it could be as serious as giving in to road rage, drinking too much, cheating, gambling, taking drugs, or – insert your favorite vice!

Jesus Christ let us know that this is something we all must overcome. And what and whom to lean on in order to do so. When you face a temptation, how do you respond? Jesus looked to Holy Bible Scripture - the Word of God - for the answer. And so should we!

The other day I was reminded of the old WWJD bracelets that young people wore to remind them of how we should act. And it’s the perfect question to ask ourselves – What would Jesus do? The first commandment is one of the hardest to keep: “I am the Lord, your God. You shall not have strange gods before me.”

Think you don’t have a problem with this one? Think again! Everytime we put our needs before God, we set ourselves up as gods. Everytime we choose pleasure, money, sports - anything that we put before God in our lives - we have created idols and false gods for ourselves. A sin God absolutely hates and strictly forbids.

We as Christians believe that the Holy Spirit will give us all the strength we need to overcome the temptations that come our way. But we need to listen to God - not to the music, movies or TV - to help form our consciences so that we know what is right and what is wrong. And to lean on Him and His Holy Word. In other words, do as Jesus did and look to the Holy Bible for our answers for how to live and we will be armed to fight the daily battle that is sure to come our way.

In this sinful flesh, we are all tempted to break His commandments, but He has given us His Word and Holy Spirit to help us stand firm. He will grant us the graces we need to follow His will and ways and resist Satan and evil in all its forms as well as the sinful desires of the flesh. God’s will be done!
