I saw someone on twitter try to explain that “Isn’t She Lovely” was used in the last episode as an expression of Jax’s love towards Ribbit and it is just mind boggling how some people really try to ignore the transfem implications. The song is about a baby girl! It’s not romantic if you actually listen to the lyrics. And Ribbit isn’t even IN the scene when it happens!!

Except, he’s being super vague about it, just saying shit like “I’ve buried a body before, I’m not afraid to do it again” and Eddie, a little clueless, and a lot stoned (because he wasn’t expecting Mike in his home at 8pm on a Friday) just blurts out “Wow I didn’t know you cared about Steve that much!”

And that’s how the kids find out Steve & Eddie are dating

it's so simple. so easy. just... stop. If you have ronance in your fic, do NOT tag it in 'relationships'. Here's what you want to do.

do you see how you can include ronance as a side pairing? DO THIS. You don't have to follow the suggestions either, you can literally put robin buckley/nancy wheeler as a whole tag in the 'additional tags' without modifying it for 'established' or 'minor'.

It's very easy and it will make people happy instead of causing rage posts like this one. Ao3 has such a fantastic tagging system, PLEASE use it.

THE RELATIONSHIP TAG IS SACRED. IT IS FOR THE PRIMARY RELATIONSHIP(S) YOUR STORY IS FOCUSED ON AND NOTHING ELSE.

There’s a reason there is a separate field for relationship tagging and that reason is that most people know what ship they want to be reading about when they are searching for fanfiction. 

You’re not trying to fool search engines with your tags to get more hits. That won’t help you! People might click on your fic to see if their ship is in there but when it isn’t, they’re gonna nope right back out again.

Be a good neighbor! Tag properly!

See there IS a way to do this with the current layout of AO3, but it is not spelled out for people so they just continually make the same mistakes.

This post is super helpful and I hope it gets enough spread that people are actually mindful of the tags they use!

However, AO3 really needs to make a separate tag field for background relationships. It needs to be spelled out more plainly, otherwise no one who has not run into this scenario that is uploading their own fanfiction will get the message and the cycle will continue for any fandom.

petition for AO3 to have filters for “main pairing(s)” and “background pairing(s)” so that people don’t waste their time when desperately searching for fic of their favorite pairing only to be overwhelmed by a more popular pairing of the same fandom in THEIR ship tag!! and with this change, then may order, peace, and love be restored to the universe…
