Do u know about vet tech
Unfortunately I don’t know a lot about vet tech. It’s not a very common thing for people to become vet techs here in SA. Most people go the veterinary route or vet nursing route. We also have Animal Health Technicians here. Is that a thing overseas?
What are some good qualities/passions to have if you want to be a vet?(Other than love for animals)
This is such a nice question so thank you for asking! ♥️
Here is just a short list of qualities that I think make a good vet:
1. Diligent and a good work ethic - This job is taxing and requires a lot of hard work! I think the people who make the best vets are the ones who are willing to go above and beyond and put in the extra hours to do more and give their patients and clients the best care.
2. Caring - Patient care is so important to me and I think caring vets are the best ones! You can really tell when a vet genuinely cares for their patient and is willing to go the extra mile to make sure they are comfortable.
3. A good listener - So much of the profession is about listening to people and understanding.
4. Honest
5. Ethical - there are so many ethical and moral dilemas that pop in this career and having good ethics and values is so important.
6. Love for animal (especially dogs! 🤩) - You do have to kind of love animals because you’ve got to work with them everyday! And you have to love dogs because dogs are awesome and amazing 🤣😂
Wow tough question to answer - there are tonnes of other things but that’s a few I can think of off the top of my head.
PS Vets are also just humans though and make mistakes - trust me I’ve made plenty this year!
How long do you study for vet
The veterinary degree in South Africa takes 6 years to complete.
Is life science (biology) compulsory to have in high school to become a veterinarian
No, strangely enough it’s not! You only need to have done Physics, Maths and English at school level to be eligible to apply.
I’ve always found it strange that Life Sciences is not a requirement as so much of the veterinary course is to do with biology! Oh well I guess we’ll never know 🙈🙈🙈
Hi there, I’m in grade 11 and interested in studying veterinary science. I want to do job shadowing and community service in the field . I was wandering how would I keep record of this to supplement my application next year?
That’s a really question! 😄
When you apply to do veterinary you will get official forms that you can ask the vets you shadowed to fill out for you. But these will only be available to you once you are doing the application process.
I would recommend for now that you ask the vets to write you a short letter stating what dates you were there and some of the things you saw and maybe some comments about your behaviour/professionalism etc. You can then attach these to your application as there is a place to upload supporting documentation.
Well done for choosing to job shadow and get to know more about the profession. You will be so grateful for the experience you’ll get!
Is Trigonometry a big section when studying veterinary?
First year Maths was such a long time ago! I honesly can’t remember! 🙈
I can say this though... You only do Maths in first year for one semester (6 months). So if you think about it in the context of a 6 year degree it’s really not that much! 😄🤣
PS I hated the Maths in first year which is probably why I’ve tried to erase it from my memory and can’t think what we did.
Can I be a vet without studying Mathematics and Physics. I've read somewhere that it depends on which animals you are willing to work with.
Nope unfortunately you won’t be able to do veterinary without having done Maths and Physics at school. Remember that all vets have to study the same 6 year course regardless of what animals they want to work with. It’s only after you have qualified that you can then decide to specialise in one species such as horses or wildlife etc.
Location of Vet college in Pretoria
The veterinary campus is called Onderstepoort and is located in the northern suburbs of Pretoria. It is in Old Soutpan Road so have a look on Google Maps to see exactly where it is.
Where Hatfield located in Pretoria
Hatfield is Hatfield 🙈 I can’t give anymore information than that... The campus is in Lynwood Road so have a look on Google Maps to find out exactly where it is.
Hey Amy. I'm starting clinics soon. Any advice?
I’m so excited for you! This was honestly the best year and a half of my studies and enjoyed it so much! 😄 I don’t have a lot of advice... Try be organised with that you keep on you at all times like a pen, highlighter, stethoscope, lead, small calculator, note pad etc. Try read up where you can before hand especially for surgeries because you’ll learn a lot more if you have a basic idea of what’s going on. Make friends with the nurse students! The nurses helped me so much when I was in clinics and were always keen to lend me a hand when they could see I was super busy! But I was equally helpful to them in return to pay back the favours 🤪😉 Most importantly enjoy it and don’t take things too seriously! Good luck and have the best time ♥️🐾

How much does it cost to study
I don’t know the answer to this off hand. Please look at the university’s website under the fees section to find out more.
Hi i am grade 11 and i want to study vetscience but i dont have maths and physics will i ve able tp do an additiinal course in maths and science to
Unfortunately you won’t be able to apply for the veterinary course unless you have done Mathematics and Physical Sciences at school. You may have to redo your matric which some people have done after school to try and get into veterinary. Not sure if you do a BSc at university level if you can apply using those subjects. You’ll have to enquire with the university directly to get more information.
Applied for Veterinary Science in 2020???
Please read this important information...
Some people have contacted me recently about the Value Added Form/Questionnaire and some of you are not aware that it has already been sent out and is available for you to complete.
Please have a look at the Student Centre on your UP Portal to find the questionnaire. If you are having trouble please contact the university directly or get in contact with someone else who has also applied.
NB! NB! NB! It is due on 30 June 2019!!!
If you do not fill out this section of the application you will not be considered for veterinary in 2020!!
Hi Seeing as the cost of studying runs upwards of half a million, how much can you expect to earn?
The salary for a veterinarian varies greatly depending on what industry you choose to work in. At the moment, community service veterinarians are paid as full state vets directly after graduating. This is an extremely good salary which I don’t feel comfortable disclosing on this forum. Thereafter the salary will depend on what job you get as a vet and in which part of South Africa you choose to work.
How much does it more or less cost
Please have a look at the university’s website to get all of the fee information.
