Summary: Ray and his friends are practicing baseball when they come up with the idea of throwing the ball at a group of girls to get their attention. One girl in particular - you - is having none of it, and that’s the one Ray goes after (literally!).
Format: Short Story
Word Count: 1.4k
Genre: Fluff
Additional Tags/Warnings: no use of (Y/N); setting is TBD; one character from the book is here (you’ll see); strong language; boys being boys; enemies to lovers; making out; X-Men reference (IYKYK); written in the present tense
Author’s Note: I managed to write this in 2 days (really 1 day because I wrote a majority of it during some downtime at an audition). I also managed to write in the present tense for the first time ever. I was going to wait to post, but I’m so proud and excited for myself that I’m saying “screw it” and posting it now. Enjoy!
P.S. There is a character that makes an appearance towards the end, and that will be the subject of my next multi-chapter fic.
P.P.S. I DO NOT OWN THE LONG WALK IN ANY FORMAT, NOR DO I OWN ANY OF ITS CHARACTERS!!!
It’s a hot one in Ray’s tiny Maine town, and not just because it’s summertime. He and his pals all turn to gawk at the girls who have been burning holes in the boys’ backs for the past thirty minutes.
Wednesday was chosen as the designated day for Ray and his baseball teammates to go to the park and play/practice. They were going about their game like normal when one of the batters hit the ball so far it landed right in front of a small group of girls from school who were resting and gossiping under a tree. They all screamed in shock, which quickly gave way to “ooo’s” when the batter came over to get the ball back. He caught the eye of one girl and flirted with her for a bit before returning to the game. After that, the boys took turns throwing the ball towards the group and talking to their pick when they came to collect.
It’s Ray’s turn now. He’s been getting small glimpses every now and then, trying to see who’s left. He finally stops at one wearing a crochet bandana - you. You stand out to him because of your looks, or look rather. While the other girls seem amused and flattered at the attention, you have your arms crossed over your chest and narrowed eyes that look like they could shoot lasers. Ray doesn’t know whether to be threatened or turned on by you.
“Focus, Garraty!” he hears one of his friends yell.
He turns his attention back to home plate. As pitcher, he winds up the ball and throws with all his might. The ball hits with a crack and makes its way up and over to your group. It falls perfectly into place. Ray gives a curt nod to signal that he’s going to get it before slowly making his way over to you.
He’s a bit surprised when you get up and snatch the ball up for him. That feeling morphs into concern when you start running away.
“Hey!” he calls out. When that doesn’t stop you, he tries again, louder. “HEY!”
You still don’t stop. If anything, you run faster. He can’t hear his friends cheering him on as he picks up his pace to catch up with you.
You disappear into the nearby woods. As Ray enters them himself, he can just barely make out your frame through all the trees. He loses you for a brief minute and stops to take everything in. He’s looking for you like he’s looking for Waldo.
“Hello.”
Ray whips his head around. There you are, your hands placed behind your back, looking so innocent.
“Where’s the ball?” he asks.
“Wow, what manners,” you comment. “No ‘hello’ back.”
“Where’s the ball?” he asks again, trying his best to sound serious.
You think about it. Your face lights up, but in a fake way. “Oh! You mean the baseball?”
“Yes.”
“I threw it away.”
Ray blinks at your simple answer. “You threw it away?”
You nod.
“Where?”
You shrug nonchalantly.
He walks past you, scanning the area he presumes you came from in the hopes it’ll appear before him. When it doesn’t, he lets out a groan.
“Why would you do that?! That was our only ball!”
You cross your arms back over your chest. “Well, maybe you should practice more because you guys suck.”
“We don’t suck! We were just messing around so we could talk to you girls.”
“You know, where I’m from, if a guy really likes a girl, he goes up to her and talks to her like a normal person.”
Ray lets out an annoyed sigh. “Yeah? Well, welcome to Maine.”
“Thanks, but I don’t want to be here.”
“Well, Maine doesn’t want you or your lousy attitude.”
You gasp, which makes Ray smirk. “How dare you! I’ll have you know plenty of boys wanted me back home! They chase me around all the time!”
He slowly makes his way over to you. He gets close to your ear and lowers his voice even though you two are the only ones around. “If that’s true, then why am I the only one here?”
You scoff before countering with, “Like I’d want you anyway.”
Ray’s jaw drops, causing you to form your own smirk. “What’s wrong with me?” He holds his arms out to show off. “I’m a good guy. I don’t drink or smoke. I respect my mom. I do okay in school.”
“What do you want? A medal?” you interrupt.
“And I helped my baseball team go to state last year!”
You hum at that.
“What?” Ray questions.
“You didn’t say anything about winning.”
He waves you off in frustration. As he continues looking around for his ball, you fiddle with your bandana. He notices and considers it for a second. It’s blue with what looks like daisies all over it. It looks… nice.
“Did you make that?” he finds himself asking.
You stop and, thinking that he’s making fun of you, straighten up to defiantly answer, “As a matter of fact, I did. I make them all the time. I even took some of them to the local market back home.”
Ray hums.
“What?”
“You didn’t say anything about anyone buying them.”
“Fuck you,” you spit at him.
“Fuck you,” he fires back.
“FUCK YOU!” you shout.
“FUCK YOU!” he echoes, matching your volume.
You two are close now, only an inch away from touching chests, which are going in and out with heavy breathing. Neither one of you plan to back down. You look deep into each other’s eyes.
You notice how his hair can get just as red as his temper in a certain light and that he has freckles dusted along his nose.
He notices how your eyes shine when you’re riled up and your lips pout ever so slightly.
Before either of you know it, you’re making out against a tree. His hands are moving from your back to your waist, as if he’s debating whether to stay or go, while yours are on his face to keep him as close to you as possible. You both let out little whimpers as you sloppily kiss, though yours stem from both him and the tree bark that’s digging into your back.
You two eventually pull back for air, your lips releasing with a pop. You stare at each other in awe. You then begin to laugh at the same time, first lightly then loudly. Ray has to step back and hunch over, his hands gripping his knees, while you hold onto your sides.
When you’re done, you go back to staring at each other, more softly this time, like you’re meeting for the first time properly.
“Hello,” Ray says what he should’ve said the first time.
“Hello,” you repeat.
“Welcome to Maine.”
“Thank you. I’m happy to be here.” You seem to mean it.
He smiles. You notice that one of his front teeth is chipped a little. You find it cute and blush, turning your head away so he won’t see.
You then remember something. You reach around, pick something up off the ground, and hold it up for Ray to see. It was dumb luck that the tree he backed you up against was the same one that hid his baseball.
His eyes widen. “Why you little-”
Before he can finish his sentence, you say, “Think fast,” and toss the ball in his direction. He catches it with ease. His eyes move between the ball and you while he scoffs in disbelief. You lean against the tree, a mischievous grin gracing your face.
Ray walks back over to you. He finds a piece of hair that has escaped your bandana and tucks it behind your ear. His hand then moves down to cup your cheek. It’s so warm, you can’t help nuzzling into him.
He inches forward to kiss you again. Right when he’s about to reach your lips, you turn your head so he lands on your cheek instead. He stays there for a second, startled, before removing himself.
“Sorry!” you giggle. “It’s just… I don’t even know your name.”
He realizes that that is indeed a fact and aims to correct it. “Right! Sorry! I’m Ray. Ray Garraty.”
Your face lights up in earnest at the name. It feels right for him.

TORI: OK! I’ll have dinner ready by then. Be safe, puppy! 😘
WIHLBORG: 😘
Tori lifted her head up from her phone to check the time. Eight on the dot. She then looked at her progress, which was currently scattered around the kitchen counter and stove. All she needed to do was add some finishing touches and dinner would indeed be ready by the time her boyfriend got home from “work.”
After the kidnapping incident, Wihlborg and Tori slowly but surely moved forward. It took him a bit longer to get over things (longer than he would’ve liked or admitted to) but he did, especially when he taught Tori how to shoot a gun (which turned him on more than he thought or would admit to). Before they knew it, they had made it to the one-year mark. They had plans to celebrate that night.
Tori could hardly believe it. They had been through so much in the past year - good, bad, and downright ugly. Things were good right now, though, and they couldn’t be happier.
As she stirred the green beans, she heard the front door alarm being disabled before a key jiggled its way into the lock. She didn’t need to turn around to see who was coming in.
“Honey, I’m home,” Wihlborg’s voice announced.
She threw a quick glance over her shoulder. “Hey, puppy! How are we feeling after work?”
“Pretty good. Pretty good.” The sound of his receding footsteps and voice indicated that he was heading to the bedroom.
“That’s… good! Dinner will be ready in a couple minutes.”
“No worries. I’m gonna get cleaned up.”
While he showered and changed, Tori got the table set up. She laid out their fancy plates and utensils first, then placed mats down for the hot food. The menu included salad, grilled chicken, green beans, and herb potatoes - all of which looked incredible, if she did say so herself.
“That looks amazing,” Wihlborg validated her from behind. She turned to look at him properly. He was in one of his tracksuits, leaning against the wall, his mouth practically watering.
“Me or the food?” she teased.
“Both.”
She blushed. “Thank you.” For his honesty, she rewarded him with a kiss. “I’ll get our drinks. You sit down and help yourself.”
He did as he was told, and made sure he could still be heard over the running water as he spoke. “You know, I got myself a little something while I was away.”
“Mmm? Treating yourself?”
“Yeah. I stopped by this cool place and bought a new ring.”
“Sounds nice.”
“It was. The problem is, something happened and they ended up giving me the wrong one. It’s too small. They boxed it up, so I didn’t know about it until I was on my way back here.”
Tori brought the glasses over and tsked. “I’m sorry about that.”
Wihlborg shrugged. “It’s okay. I took another look at it and… I think it’ll fit you.”
Her eyes lit up. “Really?!”
He nodded.
Even though she had just sat down, Tori leapt from her spot to sit in his lap and plant a big kiss on his lips. She managed to pull herself away long enough to say, “Thank you so much, Wihlborg! We’ll be, like, twinning! Or maybe not. I don’t know what the ring looks like. And I know twinning isn’t really your thing. Sorry.”
She bashfully got off her boyfriend to return to her seat. Wihlborg just hummed. The two sat in a rather awkward silence for a moment or two.
“So, can I see it now, or…?”
“Oh! Right!” Wihlborg looked down at his pants’ pocket. There was an outline of a square, like a box.
The ring.
He laid one hand on it. He hesitated pulling it out, opting instead to move his gaze between it and Tori. The longer he waited, the more suspicious she got.
What is he so nervous about? she pondered. It’s just a souvenir ring.
Wihlborg finally took the box out. It was small and in blue velvet. He set it in front of her. She playfully widened her eyes. “Fancy!” she noted as she picked it up.
She didn’t really know what she expected when she opened the box. It certainly wasn’t a diamond ring.
At first, Tori was ecstatic. It was so beautiful - a big, oval diamond in the center with a few smaller diamonds going down either side of a gold band.
Next, she was confused. How could Wihlborg have gotten something like this mixed up? She knew his taste in rings, and this wasn’t it. It looked like an-
Then, realization. This wasn’t any old souvenir ring. It was an engagement ring.
Finally, stunned silence.
All she could do was stare at it, not daring to move. She slowly brought her gaze up to Wihlborg. Upon first glance, he seemed as cool as a cucumber. It was his eyes, though, that gave him away. They were expectant, hopeful, and desperate all at once.
“Wihlborg,” she whispered, not wanting to shatter their little bubble, “is this what I think it is?”
“I don’t know. What do you think it is?”
“I think it’s… an engagement ring.”
“It is.”
Tori inhaled sharply. She dared to speak up as she inquired/stuttered, “Are… Are you… proposing to me?”
“No.”
In the time it took her to blink in surprise, Wihlborg lowered himself down on one knee. He gently placed his hands over hers and the box. “Now I’m proposing to you.”
She forced herself not to get too emotional so she could listen to him speak.
“Victoria Wright, I’m dangerous. I do dangerous things. I know dangerous people. Sometimes, I get caught up in everything and I don’t feel… human. There’s two things that help me remember that I am - my toy car, and you. Ever since I met you, you have made me feel… well, you make me feel. It’s my job to take life, but you make me alive. And I know I’ve made mistakes, especially when you were… yeah… and that was a huge wake-up call for me. It made me want to try harder for you because you deserve that and so much more. I don’t want to lose you, and I promise that I will do everything in my power to protect you, cherish you, and make you as happy as you make me. It may not be easy, but we’ve come this far and I honestly believe we can go further. And when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible. So, I’m asking you, begging you… will you marry me?”
Tears trickled down Tori’s cheeks in the middle of his speech. They came even harder when he finally popped the question. She hiccuped as she looked deep into the eyes of the man she loved with all her heart. Only one thing was on her mind.
“I just need to know, did you buy this ring or steal it when you were working?”
Wihlborg gaped at her odd question. “What? What?! No, I didn’t steal it! I bought it like a normal person!”
“I’m sorry! I was curious!”
He held a hand up. “Wait, Tori, are you saying yes?”
“Yes, you dummy!” she exclaimed with glee.
“Okay! Okay!” He let out a shaky laugh as he took the ring out and slid it on her finger, which was also shaky. “You sure know how to keep a guy on his toes.”
“That’s why you love me… and why you want me to be your wife.”
Wihlborg sighed. “Yes.”
Tori smiled, the tears having finally subsided. She beamed down at her new ring. “Well, Wihlborg, yes. I will be your wife.”
With an overwhelming burst of energy, he jumped up to his feet and brought her up with him. The two laughed and held each other close. They soon came together for a passionate kiss. He could feel the coolness of her ring’s band on his cheek, and it was such a wonderful feeling.
Tori’s eyes suddenly shot open. She broke free to ask, “Did you quote When Harry Met Sally in your proposal?”
Wihlborg scratched the back of his neck, slightly embarrassed at having been caught. “Yeah. I was wondering if you’d catch that.”
She giggled. “Awe, you are too silly and romantic!” Her tone shifted as she said with such sincerity, “And I adore you.” She went back to kissing her new fiancé, only to pull away again after a second to bring something else up. “Um, one other thing. About the wedding.”
“I’ll give you anything you want,” Wihlborg said, then thought better and added, “Within reason.”
“Don’t worry. I don’t want that much. I know most girls want something big, and maybe I did when I was little, but now… I don’t know. I don’t think it’s us. I’d be fine with just you, me, Danny, and Anata. Is that reasonable enough for you?”
“Definitely. In fact, I have half a mind to suggest that we find some courthouse and elope. Saves time and money.”
Tori’s eyes widened at the idea.
“Wait, would you actually be okay with that?” he asked.
The grin slowly forming on her face was all the answer he needed.
It took them a couple weeks to get a date set at the courthouse, find some clothes that were akin to wedding attire (Wihlborg had his work suit; Tori found a white spaghetti-strap dress with a short, lacy skirt at one of her favorite boutiques), and bring Dolinski and Anata onboard as their best man and maid-of-honor. The only thing that Dolinski asked was that his mother prepare a wedding lunch.
“She complains about being bored all the time, and she’s all about romance.”
By the end of the month, everything was set. Tori and Wihlborg stood hand in hand in the small courthouse. They tried to listen to the judge go over the legal stuff before adding in his personal thoughts on love and marriage. However, they were more interested in studying each other, counting down the seconds until they became one.
It seemed like their whole relationship flashed before them, their past and even a bit of their future:
Boy meets girl.
Boy falls for girl.
Boy turns out to be a hitman.
Girl loves boy anyway.
Boy saves girl from a kidnapping.
Boy and girl decide to get married.
Boy and girl go on to have kids - one boy and one girl and that’s it (or so they think until they unexpectedly have a third).
Boy and girl move to a bigger place in Wales.
Boy and girl raise strong, independent children (at least one of them decides to follow in their dad’s footsteps).
Boy and girl eventually retire from their jobs to live a more leisurely life.
Boy and girl die without any regrets.
“I do,” Wihlborg agreed to all of it with zero hesitation.
“I do,” Tori echoed.
“I now pronounce you man and wife,” the judge announced with great pride. “You may kiss the bride.”
With a kiss and small applause from their friends, the rest of Wihlborg and Tori’s life started.

Tori strutted along the sidewalk, a bag full of food in one hand and her work bag in the other. The brightness of her smile could rival that of the sun. She had met with a potential client who became a real client by the end of their meeting that morning, and now she was on her way back to her boyfriend with lunch from their favorite restaurant.
Needless to say, Tori was feeling pretty good. Her head was so in the clouds that she didn’t notice someone following closely behind her. Imagine her surprise when she felt someone grab her by the arm and jab her in the neck with something. Before she could turn around to see what was happening, or cry out for an explanation or help, her body and mind rapidly shut down.
She only had a few seconds of consciousness. In that time, she could hear her stuff fall to the ground, feel her body being dragged into a nearby alley, and think about Wihlborg.
Her boyfriend.
A hitman.
And when he found out what was happening to her, he was going to kill this and any other foolish bastard who dared to hurt her.
“Hi, it’s Tori! Leave a message and I’ll get back to you within two or three business days. Just kidding! I’ll call back as soon as I can!”
Wihlborg sighed. This was the third time he had called Tori with no answer.
It had been an hour since she last texted him saying she’d be returning with food. The restaurant where she was picking up lunch wasn’t that far from their place, so he didn’t understand what was taking her so long. He probably should’ve gone out looking for her, but knowing his luck she would’ve arrived home while he was out. So, he had been going back and forth between calling her, sitting down and bouncing his leg out of anxiety, and then getting up to pace in a circle around the living room. All the while, he tried to keep his mind from jumping to the worst conclusions.
He eventually dialed Dolinski’s number. “Dolinksi,” the older man answered after two rings.
“Hey, it’s me. Is Tori with you?”
“No.”
“What about Anata? Has she seen or heard from her?”
Wihlborg could faintly hear him asking Anata.
“No, she hasn’t,” Dolinski responded. “What’s up?”
“She was supposed to bring us some lunch, but she hasn’t come back yet.”
“Maybe she’s doing some shopping?”
Wihlborg shook his head. “She would’ve told me.”
“You haven’t heard anything from her?”
“No, and I’m starting to freak out.”
Dolinski was in the middle of suggesting something when he was interrupted by Wihlborg’s phone buzzing. The young man looked down and saw that he was getting a video call from Tori. “Wait, wait! She’s calling me.”
“Tori?”
“Yeah. I’ll call you back.” He swiftly ended his call to answer her. “Hey, sweetheart! I was-”
He lost his voice at the image in front of him.
It was Tori, unconscious, bound to a chair by her wrists and ankles, and gagged.
What the actual fuck?
The camera soon turned around to show a bald man with a scar along his cheek who was smiling from ear to ear. “‘Ello, you!” he said in a slimey British voice. “‘Memba me?”
Of course Wihlborg remembered him. He was the getaway driver of the target Wihlborg took out a month or so ago. He thought he killed all the henchmen. How could this one fucker still be alive?
“Quite a lovely bird ya got ‘ere.” The man moved so he and Tori were in the frame together. He hummed as he moved his finger up and down her cheek. “So soft.” He looked down at her left hand. “No ring on her finga’. Means she’s still up for grabs.”
Wihlborg’s blood was running hot and cold at the same time. His bones stiffened, making him grip his phone like a vice.
Thankfully, the man moved away from Tori and got closer to the camera. “Now you listen ‘ere, ya twat. ‘Ere’s what’s gonna happen. Ya gonna get ya ass down to whereva’ it is I send you tomorra’. Ya gonna come alone n’ unarmed. Ya do that, I let ‘er go. Easy peasy. I’ll send ya more details. Bye bye.”
Wihlborg stared at his screen long after the man hung up.
Tori was in danger… because of him.
How could he have let this happen? He should’ve done more to protect her, but between secret surveillance (which really wasn’t much of a secret because she knew about it) and being diligent with her self-defense training, what more could he do?
Plus, she needed to have some independence. He didn’t want to be one of those controlling boyfriends. Tori was a big girl and could take care of herself.
But she could also be too nice and trusting sometimes. He kept telling her that she needed to be more careful when approaching people. “Stranger Danger” and all that crap.
Not that he was blaming her for this. No, he knew she was smarter than that. She understood this, his world, him.
Him, who was wasting time spiraling when he should be focusing on how to rescue the love of his life.
“Get a grip, Wihlborg,” he said out loud to himself.
Tori was still alive, and if he moved quickly she would remain alive. As for that bastard, Wihlborg would make sure to kill him ten times over so he was really, certifiably dead.
He quickly gathered his shoes and jacket as he called Dolinski back.
Two rings. “What happened?”
“I need your help. I’m coming over.” He grabbed his keys and marched out the front door.
Tori watched with disgust as Sykes, her captor, munched away on a greasy cheeseburger. He was acting as if them being shacked up in a dilapidated room in an abandoned motel was completely normal.
When she woke up several hours earlier, the first thing she saw was his smug face. He had the nerve to smile at her and greet her like they were old friends. He then went on and on about how Wihlborg killed his boss and coworkers and nearly killed him, but he had managed to escape. He had been tracking Wihlborg for a while and finally found him with her.
“Perfect bait,” he called her, and described how he had been following her around waiting for the right time to strike.
“Ya lil’ boyfriend is gonna come down to try n’ rescue ya,” he explained, “but I’m gonna kill ‘em before he can even say ‘ello.’”
Tori laughed out loud at that, which earned her a slap across the face and a handkerchief in her mouth.
She should’ve been scared. In fact, a small part of her was. It wasn’t every day she got kidnapped by a deranged person with a vendetta.
However, she was also confident in Wihlborg. She knew how smart he was, how relentless he could be, and how much he loved her. All of that was a deadly combination.
He’d come for her. She knew it.
“Ya hungry?” Sykes asked, holding out his burger. “I don’ mind sharin’ a bit o’ spit.”
Tori stared blankly at him. She may have felt dirty and hungry, but she would be damned if she took anything this man offered her. Plus, she was still gagged, so there was that.
Sensing her denial, he scoffed. “Whateva.’” He nodded in the direction of her bag, which was on the opposite side of the room. “I found a book in ya bag. Some kinky shit in that, ‘eh?” He set his burger down on the ground and got up in her face. “Ya know, when this is all ova’, maybe we can have some fun? Nothin’ brings people togetha’ after a traumatic experience than hot, rough sex.”
Tori stared at him again, softening her eyes this time. She gestured as best as she could down to her handkerchief.
“Oh, ya have somethin’ to say, lil’ bird?”
She nodded.
Slowly, he removed her gag… and she spit directly in his eyes.
“AH!!!” he shouted, covering up the sting. “YA FUCKIN’ BITCH!!!””
“What?” Tori said as loudly as she could even though her voice was weak. “I thought you didn’t mind a little spit.”
He stormed over to his bag and pulled out a handgun. In a few steps, he was back in her face, pressing it into her forehead. “Say somethin’ now. Huh?! Say somethin’ now, ya stupid bitch! I dare ya! Ya boyfriend will find ya brains splattered all ova’ tha-!”
Suddenly, a loud noise came from outside. Both of them turned their heads to the open window. There were sounds of whirring and clanking metal. It sounded like someone was operating heavy machinery.
Sykes quickly stuffed the handkerchief back into Tori’s mouth before making his way to the edge of the window. “Wha’ tha fuck?” he asked himself as he snuck a peek outside. He swiftly moved to the door, hiding his gun inside his pants. “I’ll be right back,” he told her before running out and closing the door behind him.
What the hell is going on? Tori thought. She considered trying to hobble away from her corner over to the window to get a better look, but a.) she could get hurt, and b.) if and when Sykes got back he’d probably hurt her if he noticed she had moved. Therefore, she forced her ears to focus so she could pick everything up.
“Oi!” Sykes called out. “Wha’ tha ‘ell are ya doin’, mate?!”
“I got a call about an abandoned car,” she heard an older gentleman say. It sounded like he had an accent, but it wasn’t British. She could’ve sworn she heard it before…
“It’s not abandoned! It’s my car!” Sykes yelled.
“Sorry. I’ve already got it hooked up.”
Hooked up? Sykes’ car is getting towed? Tori smiled and laughed as best as she could.
“Bullshit!”
“You got a problem, call-”
Silence.
Complete silence.
What the fuck? Tori wondered. Now she had a greater urge to go to the window. However, just as she looked down at her bound wrists and ankles to calculate the risk, her head snapped up at the sound of footsteps.
They were slow, cautious, but still audible.
Was it Sykes?
Had something happened?
Did he do something to that poor man?
Was he coming for her next?
Tori instinctively gripped her chair. She tried to keep her breathing steady as the footsteps got louder.
The doorknob turned at a glacial pace. The door opened the same way. A gun poked through, but it wasn’t Sykes’ handgun. It looked like Wihlborg’s favorite piece.
Sure enough, on the other end of the gun was Wihlborg.
“Wihlborg!” she exclaimed, which came out muffled.
He sternly put up a finger to his lips, still holding his gun. His focus seemed locked in. She cocked an eyebrow as he ventured further into the room. He looked here and there, and it finally dawned on her what he was doing.
“Wihlborg, it’s just me,” she tried to tell him, but it was hard with her mouth stuffed. He didn’t let up, anyhow. He kept looking around like he was itching for someone to come out so he could kill them.
Only when he was absolutely certain that there was no one else in the entire space did he holster his gun, kneel in front of Tori, and let his mask slip. Relief and happiness completely overtook him.
“Wihlborg,” she tried again once he took the gag out of her mouth.
“Tori…” he whispered. He stared at her like he couldn’t believe she was right in front of him.
He noticed something and began moving his fingers gingerly towards her face. It took her a moment to remember that a bruise was surely formed from when Sykes struck her.
Wihlborg’s eyes got dark at the realization. She knew that look and attempted to distract him. “Hey, hey, not now, okay? Just get me out of here, please.”
He nodded obediently and got to work untying her wrists.
“Where’s Sykes?” Tori asked.
“Dead,” Wihlborg stated with conviction. “For real this time.”
As he moved to her ankles and she massaged her sore wrists, a shadow appeared in the doorway. She gasped, which alerted him to pull his piece back out.
“I come in peace!” Dolinski announced, his hands up high. He was wearing overalls and a baseball cap.
“Danny!” Tori cried out. She knew she recognized his voice.
The second her other ankle was free, she jumped up to give him a big hug. “Darling,” he said into her ear, patting her gently. He pulled himself back and joked, “Don’t forget that one over there. He’s the one who put all this together.”
Of course, she turned around and squeezed Wihlborg with all her might. He returned the gesture.
Dolinski continued, “I have a friend who works at a junkyard. He loaned us the truck, and he’s letting us use his machine to crush the guy and his shitty car into a pile the size of an ice cube. Nice shot, by the way.” He gave Wihlborg a thumbs up.
The young man didn’t notice. He was too busy cradling Tori’s face, trying to be mindful of her bruise. She could sense that he wanted to do something and decided to do it for him. She leaned in for a kiss.
It took him a while to get into it and not treat her like a doll. “I love you,” he whispered.
“I love you, too,” she replied, tears threatening to spill out.
“Okay, kids,” Dolinski interrupted them. “There’ll be plenty of time for that later. Right now, let’s get you home.”
After Dolinski bid the young couple good night and drove off, Wihlborg slid his arm under Tori so she was leaning on him. Together, they walked up to their apartment.
“Wihlborg, I’m fine,” she insisted. Her ankles were a bit sore (and probably had some bruises from being tied up), but it wasn’t to where she couldn’t walk on her own. He was having none of it, though.
This continued even when he led them inside. Tori let out a sigh of relief upon seeing the familiar surroundings. She then felt Wihlborg gently guiding her to the bedroom. When they reached the bed, he sat her down and said, “I’m going to help you take your clothes off. Then I’ll run you a bath. I’ll take care of your bruises as best as I can. Afterwards, I can make us some dinner and-”
Tori stopped him, holding his hands together. “Wihlborg, you don’t have to do all of this. Really.”
“I want to.” Before she could argue, he pleaded, “Please, let me do this for you.”
She bit her lip, considering his offer. He seemed pretty torn up about all of this. She could try and convince him that it wasn’t his fault, that he ended up fixing things and that she was all right in the end, but knowing his stubbornness he probably wouldn’t hear it. If this is what he needed to do to process things, so be it. Plus, setting aside the circumstances that led up to it, what girlfriend wouldn’t want to be spoiled by their boyfriend?
“Okay,” she finally agreed.
Wihlborg nodded and got to work. He removed her shoes and socks first, then went up to her pants and underwear, and finally her bra and shirt. His inspection of her body didn’t escape her. Fortunately, besides the bruises on her face, wrists, and ankles, she had no other noticeable injuries.
Satisfied, he led her to the bathroom. She opted to lean back against the sink and watch him prepare her bath, putting her hair up in the meantime. He made sure the water was at a decent temperature before filling the tub up. She only moved so he could grab the bag of epsom salt under the sink. He applied a couple of cups to the water and moved it around until it was completely dissolved. She smiled at his deep concentration throughout the entire process.
Once the water was at an okay level, Wihlborg shut it off, took Tori by the hand, and helped her into the tub. She laid back to get comfortable, letting everything except her head get submerged into the water. “This feels so good,” she breathed out.
She looked up at her man, who had a small smile on his face. However, the worry in his eyes remained.
He went to the cabinet for a washcloth. He then knelt down next to the tub, next to Tori, and soaked the cloth in the water. “This’ll help with the bruise on your face,” he explained.
“I trust you,” she said, trying to comfort him.
He brought the cloth up to her cheek, gently patting the whole area before dunking the cloth and patting her again. She closed her eyes, letting all the water “wash” away the memories of the past 24 hours.
“This is really nice. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” He stopped his ministrations, and she opened up to see what he could be doing. He was simply staring at her like before. He was still trying to convince himself that she was here, safe and sound. He didn’t even notice when the washcloth fell out of his grasp to float in the water.
Tori angled herself so she was facing him better. She brought her hands out of the water and placed them on top of Wihlborg’s. “I can tell that you’re overthinking this entire thing,” she said, “so I’m going to break it down for you. I got kidnapped. You made a plan to rescue me. You succeeded. I’m alive. You’re alive. That piece of shit is dead. I’m back home with you. We’re together again and we’ll be together forever and ever. Did I miss anything?”
Wihlborg wanted to laugh at her straightforwardness, but he couldn’t because of one simple fact. “Yeah. You wouldn’t have been kidnapped in the first place if it wasn’t for me.”
“Wihlborg, you can’t-”
“I should’ve checked that he was really dead before I left.” He turned away from her to berate himself, pinching his nose in frustration. “Why didn’t I check? Why didn’t I do it right the first time?”
She tried to pull him back with her hands and words. “I know you. I know that you always see a job through. This was just one of those one-in-a-million things you couldn’t have seen coming. But you handled it. That’s what matters.”
“And if I hadn’t? If I had screwed up again?”
“But you didn’t.”
“But I could’ve.”
“Wihlborg, you have never doubted yourself before and you shouldn’t doubt yourself now.”
“I can’t help it!” he exploded. Tori was tough, though, and didn’t flinch. All she did was pay attention to how his eyes had gotten wild and he was gripping the edge of the tub for dear life.
He was breaking down.
As calmly as she could, she brought him back to reality. “You’re overthinking again,” she said. “Care to share?”
Wihlborg sighed, hoping that it would relieve some of the pressure for even a minute so he could explain himself.
“You are everything to me, Tori,” he confessed. “I made a promise to keep you safe and I’ve done everything to keep it… and it still wasn’t enough. You could’ve been killed and I… Shit, I couldn’t live with myself if that happened.”
She brought his hands to her lips and kissed them softly. “I know. And I also know that you can’t control everything. All you can do is your best which, let me assure you, is more than enough.”
“But-”
“Nope. Unless it’s my cute butt or yours, I don’t want to hear it.”
Wihlborg’s face morphed into confusion before the silliness of her statement settled in and made him break. He let out a laugh that got bigger and bigger with each second. This triggered Tori’s own victorious smile and laughter.
For that brief moment, things seemed to be getting back to normal.
After they had calmed down, Tori motioned for Wihlborg to bring his face closer to hers. He happily obliged and closed the space between them with a kiss. He didn’t hesitate with his passion this time, and she couldn’t have been more thankful.
She pulled back to say, “I know it’s only been a day, but God I missed this.”
“I missed it, too,” he admitted, going back for more. She held his neck to keep him in place while he latched onto her shoulders to steady himself. The kiss got pretty heated in a short amount of time.
“You know,” she interrupted again, “I so want to drag you into this tub so you can ravish me.”
“Then why don’t you?”
“Because I need to actually get cleaned up and someone needs to make that frozen pizza with the gluten-free crust.”
Wihlborg pulled away and began searching himself.
Tori gave him a quizzical look. “What are you doing?”
“I’m looking for my phone. I’m sure Dolinski’s done by now, so maybe he can-”
She laughed so hard, she threw her head back against the edge of the tub. “Go! Please!” she ordered while shooing her man away.
Before he rose to his knees to do her bidding, he asked, “Can you finish up on your own?”
“Yes, sir.” She gave a mock salute and grabbed this washcloth to properly scrub herself.
He grinned. “Alright. Just let me know when you’re done. I want to put some stuff on your bruises that’ll help them heal.”
“And can you please leave out some pajamas for me? You know what I like.”
He sure did - one of his shirts and some underwear. That was it.
“Yes, your highness.”
She held her head high to keep her imaginary crown from falling. He bowed and started to make his exit.
Before he could cross the threshold, a thought occurred to Tori. “Wihlborg?”
He turned to her. “Yes?”
“I know that you’re beating yourself up over this, but I just want to say thank you for not suggesting we break up.”
Actually, it did cross his mind. He had only ever thought about the idea once before, back when they had their first fight a few months ago. He thought he was too deep in love then to actually go through with it, but it was nothing compared to now.
“I would burn down the world to keep you in my life,” he declared, finally leaving to make dinner.
To anyone else, that would’ve sounded creepy, downright ominous. To Tori, it was the most romantic thing ever. While she had no doubt that she and Wihlborg would face many more challenges going forward, it was things like that that gave her the utmost confidence that they could handle it all.

After Tori sat the last box down on top of another box, she stopped to look around her new place.
Her and Wihlborg’s new place, she should say.
The months following Wihlborg’s big reveal were eventful, to say the least. With a bit of encouragement from her boyfriend, Tori finally quit her God-awful job at the start of the new year and began designing websites as a freelancer. Most of her clients from her former company followed her because she was that good. She hardly ever found herself short on projects to complete.
Wihlborg was also on a hot streak with his assignments. True to her word, Tori helped out however she could - cooking meals for him so he’d have his energy, cleaning his equipment and making sure it was properly packed, and doing some extra research into his target(s). He was so grateful that he made sure to take good care of her in return. He would do normal boyfriend things like give her gifts (most of which were books that were on her wishlist) and not-so-normal boyfriend things like teaching her self-defense (she could definitely pack a punch to any area of the body).
In-between everything, they often met up with Dolinski and Anata. They would double-date at restaurants or at one of their homes, always talking and laughing. And while the gentlemen went away on “business,” the girls stayed behind to run around town and gossip.
With such steady money coming in and balance being achieved, Wihlborg suggested moving in together. He claimed it was because Tori would be safer living with him, but deep down he just really loved her and wanted to take the next step in their relationship. She sensed it, felt the same way, and did not hesitate to say yes.
She sensed a presence coming up behind her. “Hey,” Wihlborg addressed her gently so as not to scare her. “What are you thinking about?”
Once she registered that it was him and that there was no need to elbow him like he had taught her to do, she let him wrap his arms around her and allowed herself to sink back into him. “I’m thinking about how good life is right now,” she responded wistfully.
“You deserve it, sweetheart.”
Wihlborg wasn’t one for nicknames, but he decided to try it for Tori. A couple weeks ago it was “baby.” Last week it was “sweetie.” This week it was “sweetheart.” She blushed no matter what he called her.
She turned around to put her arms around his neck, keeping them close together. “So do you, puppy,” she teased him.
Heat crept up his cheeks.
The nickname slipped out one night when they were messing around in bed. “You just have these big eyes that remind me of a puppy dog!” she explained through her giggles. “Plus, you’re really loyal and protective!” He answered with a sarcastic “woof,” but didn’t object to her calling him that.
He went in for a kiss. It started out soft but eventually got deeper.
“Wihlborg,” Tori whispered. He paid her no mind as he moved down to peck at her neck. “Wihlborg,” she tried again, a bit firmer. He stopped but didn’t completely detach himself from her. “We have a lot of unpacking to do.”
He let out a disappointed sigh. “I know. I know.”
With one last little bite that made her gasp, Wihlborg detached himself from her. He looked around at their stuff. All of the boxes and furniture had been distributed throughout the new apartment, with some being in the bedroom and adjoining bathroom, a couple pieces in her office and the kitchen, and the majority occupying the living room.
“So, where do we start?” he asked.
“Why don’t we start right here?” Tori suggested, gesturing around. “It’ll probably be the hardest since it has the most stuff, so it’s best to get it out of the way now.” She immediately went to a box marked “TORI’S BOOKS” and began unfolding the top.
Wihlborg smirked. “You say we’ll get the hardest stuff out of the way first, yet you go for the easiest thing to do.” Tori rolled her eyes as she gathered a stack of books and began setting them up in the wall shelves near the hallway. “Do you need any help?”
She continued taking books out and putting them in place as she said, “If you want to, you can. They’re pretty much in alphabetical order, so just grab some and stick them up here.”
He nodded and looked inside to grab something. Tori had her back turned, so she couldn’t see the look of curiosity that came across his face when the first book he saw was Haunting Adeline by H.D. Carlton.
Wihlborg knew that she loved to read, but until that moment he didn’t really know what types of books she was into. He decided to take a peek. From the title and cover, it looked like a horror or mystery of some sort. He opened up on a random page… and skimmed through the roughest sex scene known to man.
“Whoa!”
He shut the book hard. The loud sound made Tori whip around to him.
“What?!”
“I, uh…”
He sheepishly held her book up. A look of realization and fear hit her hard and she scurried over to rip it out of his hand.
“Oh, my God! I’m so sorry! That is…! I mean…!”
While she tried to explain herself, Wihlborg looked back inside the box. He dug up more books with similar-looking covers, similar themes of rough sex and romance, and even similar main characters.
Mafia men.
Stalkers.
Criminals.
Hitmen.
“I’m sensing a pattern here,” he muttered. A thought occurred to him. “Wait, did you get these before we met?”
When he looked back up to his girlfriend, she was using the book to hide her embarrassment. “Yes,” he could hear her say.
“Huh.”
She slowly brought the book down. “‘Huh,’ what?”
“That explains why you’re cool about my job.”
She was about to deny it, but upon second thought she said, “I think you’re right. I’ve always had a thing for dangerous guys who are completely devoted to their girlfriends.”
“‘Danger and Devotion.’ Is that the title of another one of your books?”
Tori scoffed. “No.”
“Well, maybe you should write it.” Wihlborg inched his way over to her with a wicked grin. “I could be your inspiration.”
She narrowed his eyes at him, trying not to give into his teasing.
Another thought came to him. “Have you ever… imagined me as one of your characters?”
She gawked at him, unable to come up with an answer.
“I’ll take that as a yes,” he smugly answered for her.
“Keep it up, mister, and my fictional men will see a lot more action than you.” She pointed a finger at him in an attempt to look stern. It was adorable.
However, he knew when to quit while he was ahead, so he nodded dutifully and went back to gathering books for the shelf.
After they stacked her entire collection, moved their furniture around in each room, got their trinkets settled on this table and that shelf, and made their bed, they helped themselves to a nap. When they woke up later that evening, a wave of pure happiness overcame them. The feeling was so strong that they spent a good portion of their night making love.
Now, sex up to that point for Wihlborg and Tori was good. It took them about a month to be physical with one another, but ever since then they managed to have sex two or three days out of the week. It was mostly vanilla stuff - him touching her, her touching him, him on top, her on top, him going down on her, and her going down on him.
Tori secretly wanted to try out some kinks, but she didn’t know how to approach the subject. Yes, Wihlborg was like the dark main male characters in her books, but that didn’t mean he’d be up to any of their sexual deviances. He was too respectful to her in and out of the bedroom.
Little did she know that her book collection would ignite something in him that would lead to new means of pleasure for them both.
Tori tried a few different poses in the bathroom mirror, the little charm that rested below her breasts jingling with her. With each pose, she went from thinking that buying this was the smartest thing she ever did to wondering if she should’ve saved her money.
Wihlborg and Dolinski were out of town for a couple of days, and Anata suggested going downtown for some shopping. They went into one of their favorite boutiques and noticed some new lingerie sets. Anata convinced Tori to try one of them on - a one-piece with thin, black, zig-zag straps that went over her arms and breasts and even under her boobs with the little charm attached. The top half had colorful floral designs and the lower half did, too, before turning into black bottoms with ruffles. With a bit of persuasion from Anata, Tori bought it.
Wihlborg was sure to lose his mind over it. Maybe he’d be overcome with lust and would demand having her on the spot. Maybe he’d even be rough with her…
“Honey, I’m home!”
Tori nearly toppled over in her black heels. She checked the closed door.
Wihlborg was home already? She thought she’d have more time to think this through.
She kicked off her heels and put on her fluffy, blue, non-sexy robe. At the last second, she decided to pull her styled hair back into a ponytail. Once she was satisfied with her toned-down look, she exited the bathroom and made her way to the living room where her man was unpacking his bag.
“Hey, puppy! Can I get you-?” She clammed up as soon as her eyes landed on her boyfriend.
He was sitting on the couch in a black suit and tie, white dress shirt, and black dress shoes. He also appeared to have cleaned up his scruff. He was still going through his bag, but he seemed to be moving in slow motion to allow Tori time to drink him in.
He was very handsome in his get-up. He reminded her of a secret agent or something. He probably had to dress like that to blend in at some fancy place and then find the target to take him out. Her mind began to conjure up a story of being there with him in a beautiful evening gown. After he was done with his mission, he’d find her, briefly dance with her, and then whisk her away to a hiding place where he would whisper all sorts of wicked things in her ear as he-
“Tori?”
She blinked at the sound of her name.
“Everything okay?” Wihlborg asked, looking at her with concern.
“Yeah,” she breathed out. She cleared her throat to try that again. “Yes. Can you… give me a minute?”
Before he could answer her, she rushed back to the bathroom. She looked in the mirror and saw that she was absolutely flushed. She ripped off her robe and fanned herself in an effort to calm down. She couldn’t get the image of Wihlborg in his sexy suit out of her head. She considered her own outfit and began envisioning herself standing next to him in it.
Damn, she thought. We’d make a hot couple.
That was all Tori needed to go through with her plan.
She put her heels back on, let her hair fall down, and popped her head out the door.
“You still doing alright?” she called out.
“Yeah,” he replied. “You?”
“Oh, yeah.” She smiled to herself, mischief and desire bubbling inside of her. “Hey, Wihlborg, could you stand up for a minute, please?”
“Is everything alright?”
“Everything’s fine. I just want you on your feet for a minute.”
Tori had to trust that he was following her instructions. She gave it a few seconds before stepping out of the bathroom and back into the living room. She took a deep breath and channeled her energy towards being as sexy as possible.
She revealed herself, holding an arm up against the doorway while her other hand rested on her hip. She crossed her legs and prayed she could keep her balance. Wihlborg was facing the other direction for just a second. When he turned to her, he did a double-take.
Tori stood in place so he could absorb her… although it looked like his brain was broken. His pupils were highly dilated, his jaw slack, and his breathing uneven. She thought she could see a bulge in his pants.
She decided to get a better look. She glided over to him, trying to keep up her act but getting slightly nervous with each step. When she was chest to chest with him, she felt his member poking her in front.
“I take it you like this?” she asked innocently.
All Wihlborg could do was nod.
“Well, you can enjoy it a bit more in the bedroom.”
With that, she took him by the tie and led them to the aforementioned room. She looked straight ahead, her heart beating wildly at what could potentially happen.
She let go of him upon entering the room. As soon as he stepped inside, he pulled her back and spun her around. He kissed her so fiercely she let out a yelp. It didn’t take long for her to moan against him. She carded her fingers through his hair while his hands roamed up and down her body, taking in the silkiness of the fabric and the softness of her skin.
Wihlborg guided them towards the bed, only stopping when Tori hit the edge and was forced to sit down. He looked down at her, a hand going up to cup her face. He pressed his thumb against her lips and she took it, sucking it slowly, sensually.
“God, you’re hot,” he stated, his voice low. It sent goosebumps along Tori’s skin.
He took his digit out with a ‘pop’ and said, “Hold your hands out.”
He undid his tie and began binding her wrists. She gasped as she realized what he was doing. A part of her was amazed that her fantasies were actually coming true, another part was anxious as to how it would turn out, and a third part was excited to find out.
Before he tightened the hold, he asked, “Do you trust me?”
“Absolutely,” she said without hesitation.
“And if I do something you don’t like, you’ll tell me?” She nodded. “I need to hear it, Tori.”
“Yes.”
Satisfied, Wihlborg created a bow for easy release. Tori moved her hands around to properly get acquainted with her restraints. With both of them happy with the results, he said, “Turn around on the bed.”
While she moved into position, he walked to her side and grabbed both of her pillows. He placed them in the middle.
“Lay here on your stomach.”
She leaned forward, her stomach nicely cushioned. Her hands and arms were straight out in front of her and her ass was fairly high in the air.
She followed Wihlborg as he went behind her.
“Look straight ahead.”
She obeyed his orders, biting her lip at what she couldn’t see. She could faintly hear some ruffling, and guessed that he was taking some of his clothes off. She could feel his hot gaze on her.
She had no idea that he had been doing a bit of research ever since he found out about what she liked in a (fictional) man. A number of ideas were swirling around in his brain. With her perfect ass right there for the taking, he finally landed on one.
Tori waited with bated breath for what Wihlborg could possibly do next. She did not expect him to smack her ass dead in the center. She cried out in surprise before whipping her head around.
“Look straight ahead,” he repeated, not too harshly but firm enough to show how serious he was.
Tori had never seen Wihlborg like this before, and it made her soaking wet.
She hadn’t even fully turned around when he smacked her again on the right ass cheek. He moved to her left and then back to her center, smacking her there two more times. She winced with each blow. It occurred to her that he still had his rings on, which meant definite redness and even bruises. Her legs clamped together to hide her pooling wetness.
When she felt his hand on her again, it was handling her with more care. He smoothed out the places he had hit her. She sighed at how good it felt.
She suddenly felt Wihlborg’s hand slide over her ass crack, going up and down over her lingerie. He teased her like that for a few minutes. Every time he moved down, he seemed to be moving closer to her pussy. She tried to push herself back and open her legs so he’d finally get there, but she felt his other hand hold her down.
“Stay still,” he ordered.
Tori let out a whine. “Please.”
It took everything in her not to turn around as soon as he stopped his ministrations. “Please what?” she heard him ask.
“Please touch me.”
She knew he had a big smirk on his face as he picked up where he left off. “I am touching you.” “You know what I mean,” she huffed out.
Without warning, he spanked her again. She gasped as he explained, “If you want something, Tori, you have to ask for it. Use your words like a big girl.”
She’s pretty sure if he could see her pouting he’d spank her again, so she dropped her attitude. “Please touch me… down there.”
“Down where?”
“Wihlborg, I swear-”
Another smack.
“Please touch my pussy!” she exclaimed.
Wihlborg must’ve been satisfied with that because she felt two of his fingers heading in the direction of her wetness. “Good girl,” he praised her, going in slow circles around the area outside of the underwear.
Tori moaned with pleasure. She then felt the bed dip on one side and his hot breath on her ear. She bit her lip as he whispered, “You see what happens when you stop acting like a brat?”
She nodded before remembering herself and quickly responded with, “Yes.” She wanted to take his hand, turn around and kiss him, grind into him, plead with him to take her already, but she didn’t. She was catching on that all of this would be worth it if she just played along.
After a few tantalizing minutes, Wihlborg asked, “Do you want more?”
“Yes.”
“What do you want?”
“I want you… to touch me. Under my underwear. Really play with my pussy.”
He hummed as he thought about it. “I think I can do that.”
And he did.
“Shit!” Tori exclaimed as his fingers went up and down her slit, gathering her juices. She could feel the slightly cool metal of his rings against her. She automatically moved with him. Fortunately, he didn’t stop her. He let her ride his fingers for as long as she wanted. He even let out a few groans, letting on that he was slowly losing control.
“Are you enjoying this?” he asked.
“Definitely.”
“Do you want anything else?”
“I want your fingers in me. Now.”
She was so far gone that she forgot her manners. He was too far gone to care.
His digits went all the way inside her, up to the knuckle, in and out. She gripped the bedsheets, forcing herself to be okay with his slow pace for a couple of minutes.
“Can you go a little faster?” she dared to ask, and he followed through. “A little harder?” As she wished.
“Look at me, Tori.”
She turned to the side and saw her boyfriend. His jacket and shoes had been discarded. His shirt sleeves had been rolled up. His toy car necklace was bouncing against his chest in time with his movements and pants. His pupils were completely blown.
He looked very desperate and very sexy.
“Kiss me,” Tori demanded.
He surged forward, capturing her lips before parting them with his tongue.
“Kiss my neck.”
He dove towards the designated area, leaving kisses and licks in his wake.
She was almost there. She could feel it. She knew what it would take to get her to the finish line.
“Bite me.”
Wihlborg landed on one particular spot on her shoulder, but was hesitant. “Are you sure?”
“Yes!” she cried out. “Please, I’m so close! Bite me! Make me yours!”
That last part really got to him. As he clamped his teeth down into her shoulder, she announced her orgasm with a scream. She was glad she was lying down because her bones were practically jelly by the time she came down from her high. All the while, Wihlborg gently pumped through her climax.
“Stop,” Tori requested breathlessly. “Stop, please! It’s too much!”
He eventually complied and pulled his fingers out of her. He wasted no time putting them in his mouth. He savored it, as if her juices were the elixir keeping him alive.
“You taste so good,” he muttered, coming forward to kiss her again.
Tori had tasted herself on him a number of times before, but this time felt different. She couldn’t get enough of this. Of him.
“What now?” she asked.
He stopped long enough to answer, “Now it’s my turn.”
Wihlborg got up to return to his place at the foot of the bed. Tori didn’t think about any consequences as she maneuvered around and sat up to the best of her abilities (it was a bit tricky with her hands still tied together). She wasn’t even properly situated when he started undoing his pants and pulling them down along with his underwear. He was fully erect. She was surprised he hadn’t come when she did. Then again, he had amazing restraint.
Said restraint was wearing thin, however. Tori only had a brief second to admire him before he grabbed her by the ankles and pulled to the edge. She squealed as the force made her lie back. Her arms were above her head and her focus was locked in on Wihlborg.
He came forward slightly, using his fingers to trace along her exposed skin. She shivered at the sensation.
“Tori, I want you to suck my dick,” he said, his voice dripping with desire. “Is that alright?”
She gave an eager nod. “Yes. I’d love that.”
He smiled. “Okay.” He gently helped her slide down to the floor. She was on her knees, her hands placed daintily in front of her and her breasts pushed up thanks to the lingerie. Again, Tori was amazed Wihlborg didn’t come at the sight of her.
“Listen, Tori,” he said, cradling her face to make sure she was paying attention, “if things start to become too much or uncomfortable, I want you to reach up and scratch my stomach as hard as you can.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
She smiled. “Alright.”
“Thank you.” He spread his feet to get in a proper stance. “Are you ready?”
“Yes, baby. Just tell me what to do.”
He let out a broken sigh at the nickname.
Tori snuck a glance at his cock and saw that he was leaking a little. She wondered how long he would last.
“I want you to start by just kissing me,” Wihlborg said. She did as he requested, lightly pressing her lips against him. She moved up and down along his member, taking her sweet time.
“Now you can lick me.”
Again, her actions were soft. She did small kitten licks, occasionally picking up his pre-cum. She liked the taste of him just as much as he did her.
She glanced up and saw him staring at her in total awe. It was getting harder for him to keep his cool with each passing second.
When he finally held his cock up and said, “Suck,” and she did, he threw his head back in ecstacy. His hands moved to the back of her head to guide her along his shaft, all the while trying to be mindful of his thrusts into her.
Although Tori understood his warning about things becoming too much, she wanted to put up with all of it to get Wihlborg to his climax. She took the initiative by picking up her pace and adding a bit of teeth.
“Fuck!” he hissed.
She did it again, a bit harder this time.
“Tori! Shit! You’re so good. Such a good girl.”
She responded by raking her nails along his inner thighs. He threaded his fingers through her hair and gave it a tug, making her moan. The vibrations sent goosebumps all over his body.
“Tori… Tori, I… fuck!” His voice was high-pitched now. “You’re gonna make me… I’m gonna…”
She took him as fast as she could. Spit was coming out of her mouth and a tear or two rolled down her cheeks, but she persevered.
She was rewarded with her boyfriend’s hot cum filling her mouth. She breathed through her nose as she swallowed all of it. She scratched his stomach lightly, more as a means of further stimulating him than needing him to stop. However, true to his word, he immediately backed off. His hands flew out of her hair and his thrusting came to a halt. It actually helped as she finished cleaning him up. She ended things with a light kiss to his tip.
As she wiped off what was left around her lips, Wihlborg slowly opened his eyes. He tried to get his breathing back to normal, but one look at Tori made that impossible.
“I need you,” he blurted out.
“I need you, too.”
Quick as a flash, he leaned forward, grabbed her from underneath her armpits, and lifted her up so she was sitting back on the bed. She giggled, and his dick became hard once again at the sound.
“Wait here,” he instructed her.
After ridding himself of his pants and underwear, he ran over to the nightstand next to the bed to pull out a condom. Once he collected the small packet, he grabbed Tori’s pillows and placed them back at the top of the bed. “Scoot back here” he said, patting them.
Tori pretended to think about it for a second before answering, “What’s wrong with right here?” She laid back, stretching her still-bound hands above her head and arching her back. She batted her eyelashes and gave a sexy smirk.
Wihlborg let out a deep breath through his nose. God, the things this woman did to him. “Alright then.”
He unwrapped the condom and placed it on his member. He then slowly got on the bed and hovered over her. His legs were on either side of hers and his hands caged in her still-upright arms, trapping her.
Wihlborg got a hold of his dick and looked between it and the place where Tori’s pussy was covered by the lingerie. He started by simply moving it up and down the clothed area. She tried to move with him, wanting some friction.
“Do you want this?” he asked.
She breathed out a “yes.”
“How much do you want it?”
“So much.”
“Beg for it.”
“Please.”
“Please what?”
“Please fuck me.”
“More.”
“Please give me your cock.”
“More.”
“Please, Wihlborg!” she cried desperately. “I want you so bad! Fuck me! Fuck me hard! Make me forget everything except you and your cock! Please!”
Without warning, he moved her lingerie aside and thrusted into her. The two sighed in unison at the feeling of him fully inside her. He moved in and out at a glacial pace so she could take him all in. Every now and then, he would lean over to grant her kisses. He was being sweet now, but he had plans for her.
“Oh, God!” she let out after a particularly hard thrust.
He smirked. “You like that?”
“Yes!”
He did it again, and her pussy fluttered around him.
“Shit…” Wihlborg muttered. He started to go faster, still adding in a hard thrust here and there to knock the wind out of Tori. One of his hands went up to grab onto hers. They were panting into each other’s mouths now.
She was close, he could tell.
“Wihlborg… Oh, my God! Wihlborg!”
Without warning, he slowed down and went back to being gentle.
She blinked at the sudden shift. “Wh-What? Wihlborg, what-?”
“I want this to last,” he explained, not faltering for a second.
Her face twisted in confusion. “But we’ve been at this for almost an hour!”
“Oh, are you getting tired, sweetheart?”
His mocking tone made her pout. “Don’t you ‘sweetheart’ me right now.”
Wihlborg completely stopped, his eyes darkening. Tori knew that he wouldn’t cause serious harm to her, but his threatening aura still made her hold her breath.
“You said you wanted me to make you forget everything except me and my cock, correct?”
She began to nod, but his hand around her throat stopped her. He just held it in place, not adding pressure or anything. She almost wished he did, though. The cool metal of his rings felt good against her burning skin.
“Let’s try that again. You said you wanted me to make you forget everything except me and my cock, correct?”
“Yes,” she responded meekly.
“Well, this is how you’re going to remember. If you have a problem with that, we can stop right now. Call it a night.”
Tori almost wanted to call his bluff, see if he would really be okay with ending things. However, her greedy pussy was demanding the orgasm it was rudely denied.
“No,” she finally said. “I’m sorry. Do whatever you want to me.”
The hand that was around her throat came up to caress her cheek. Wihlborg’s eyes softened as he placed a chaste kiss to her lips. He whispered, “Good girl,” and went back to fucking her.
It was a vicious cycle.
He would go slow.
He’d tease her with a few hard thrusts.
He’d go a little faster.
And just as she was about to climax, he’d pull back and begin again.
Wihlborg did this about three more times before Tori decided she couldn’t take it anymore. “Wihlborg?” she addressed him as he picked up his pace. “Can you untie me? Please?”
His resolve had pretty much disappeared at this point, so he was quick to do as she asked. One hand came up and undid the bow that held her together.
The second her hands were free, she unceremoniously tossed his tie aside, flipped them around, and began riding him for all she was worth. His hands latched onto her hips to keep her steady while hers held onto his chest. His stupid shirt was still on, and it was preventing her from feeling his hot skin on her.
“Take this off!” she growled. She went to the middle of it and ripped it open. Buttons flew everywhere.
Wihlborg’s eyes widened at her controlling nature, but he was too under her spell to argue.
“And this!” Even the sight of his undershirt pissed her off.
He was made completely bare for her. She wished she could join him, but her body was more focused on finishing what he started. Her eyes were screwed shut and her nails dug into his skin. His grip on her hips got harder. Neither one cared about potential bruises and scratches.
“Shit! SHIT!” she exclaimed. “Oh, Wihlborg! Fuck me!”
“That’s it, Tori,” he coaxed her. “You feel so good. Keep going. Don’t stop.”
She shook her head. “Won’t stop… Won’t stop… Oh, God!”
“Come for me, Tori. Fucking come for me.”
With another big scream, she stilled, reaching her peak. After a couple more pumps, Wihlborg followed suit.
It took a couple minutes for the two to calm down. Tori forced herself to steady her breathing and go slow with her movements. Her first task was getting off of her boyfriend’s soft dick. She’d had it in her for so long that she couldn’t help the groan she released when it left her pussy. Her second task was to move to her boyfriend’s side and snuggle up next to him. After he disposed of the condom, he held his arm out, which closed around her once she was in place.
Both stared up at the ceiling in amazement.
“That was…” Tori went first, but she was unable to finish her own thought.
“Yeah,” Wihlborg agreed.
They laughed together. She snaked her arms around him, and they held each other tight. They were back to their usual dynamic - soft and silly.
They soon engaged in a lazy kiss that Tori stopped to say, “Thank you for that.”
“You’re welcome. And thank you, too.”
“I guess I should also thank Anata for telling me to buy this.”
“I’ll say.” Wihlborg snapped the edge of her bottoms against her. She let out a little gasp and lightly hit his chest. He chuckled as he continued, “And I should thank all those dark romance books of yours for giving me my ideas for tonight.”
“Oh? Have you been making your way through my collection without me knowing?”
“More like doing secret Google searches on how to talk dirty and bondage and edging.”
Tori giggled at the admission. “Did you happen to look up what we do now?”
“Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty hungry.”
“I could eat. After a shower, of course.”
The two took their time lifting themselves up from the bed. Tori was still in her lingerie, and Wihlborg helped her take it off. He tried to be discreet when ogling her naked breasts. She noticed anyway and stated, “I take it you like this?”
“You know I do,” he chuckled.
“Well, you can enjoy it a bit more in the bathroom.” As soon as she stepped out of her lingerie, which was in a little pool on the floor, she took him by the hand and led them to their destination. She looked straight ahead while he stared at her swaying body. Their heartbeats picked up again at what would happen next.

Tori was in the middle of work, so she covered up her laugh as best as she could at her boyfriend’s response.
She sighed. She still couldn’t believe she got to say that word.
Boyfriend.
The day following the karaoke bar, Wihlborg and Tori couldn’t wait to plan another, proper meet-up. They had lunch at a little cafe not too far from her job, which they ate at almost every day the rest of that week. They soon upgraded to dinners that initially ended with simple goodbyes but slowly turned into kisses and caresses. After a month, they finally put a label on things.
They had been dating for almost three months now, and Tori was over the moon. Wihlborg was a good guy with a head full of wisdom and an unusual sense of humor that was on par with his unique sense of fashion, all of which Tori couldn’t get enough of. She had finally found her romantic MMC.
And yet there was a part of her that had doubts.
Tori liked to think that she was an open book. Anything Wihlborg wanted to know, she told him. (For example, she told him the reason she doesn’t drink alcohol - her dad nearly got them killed when he decided to drive them home drunk one night.) However, the same could not be said of him. At first, she chalked it up to him being cautious, like most people are at the start of a relationship because they want to make a good impression. However, as time went on, anytime something personal came up like his childhood or work, he would either tip-toe around the subject or avoid it altogether.
Tori eventually convinced herself that he needed a bit more time to open up, and she was more than happy to give it to him. But even she had her limits, which were about to reach a breaking point.
One activity that the couple enjoyed doing together was doing their nails. That night, Tori was doing Wihlborg’s.
“I bet you were one of those kids that really tried to stay in the lines while coloring,” he opined as he watched his girlfriend (he, too, couldn’t believe he got to say that word) carefully paint one of his nails green to match another one that was red (he also couldn’t believe he’d be doing something like this for Christmas).
“What can I say? It’s the artist in me.” She dramatically held up her hand like an artist with their brush. The two laughed but quickly calmed down so she could finish.
They were currently sitting on his couch, the last little bit of their movie playing in the background. There was a peaceful vibe about the moment.
No time like the present, Tori told herself. Once the final black nail was painted, she set a timer for them to dry. She then scooted closer to Wihlborg, who was sitting still with his hands on his thighs. She placed an arm around him.
“So, I want to talk to you about something.”
He eyed her cautiously. “Oh?”
“It’s nothing bad, I promise. There’s this Christmas party at work at the end of the week and we’re allowed a plus one. I was wondering if you wanted to come. It’s very low-key. No games or presents or ugly sweater contests or anything like that. You can just stuff your face with finger foods and listen to the Christmas music that’ll be playing through our internet radio. What do you say?” She batted her eyelashes and pouted her lips to push things over the line.
Unfortunately, it did little to sway him. “I… I don’t know. I think I’ll be busy… with work.”
Tori was glad his focus shifted to his nails so he couldn’t see the disappointment on her face. She pulled her arm away from him, retreating into herself.
“Right. Work. Which involves?”
He hesitated. “I… I can’t get into it.”
She rolled her eyes at the predictable response. “If you don’t want to go, Wihlborg, just say so. You don’t have to lie.”
“I’m not lying,” he argued, catching her tone.
“Then tell me what you could possibly be doing that you can’t make it to one little Christmas party?”
“I told you-”
“No, you really haven’t told me anything.”
Wihlborg huffed. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It means that we’ve been dating for three months and I don’t know a damn thing about you.”
“Yes, you do.”
“Except what you actually do for a living.”
Wihlborg paused for a minute. Tori hoped that he would finally come around and lay everything out for her.
“It’s… It’s complicated.”
She let out a growl. “So explain it to me!”
“I can’t!”
“Can’t or won’t?!”
He jumped up from his seat, trying to get away. “Why do you want to go to that stupid party anyway? You keep telling me how much you hate your coworkers. Honestly, you should just quit.”
She shook her head defiantly as she got up to follow him. “Don’t turn this around on me!”
He sighed. “Tori, please, I don’t want to fight.”
“Then talk to me,” she begged.
“What do you want to talk about?”
“Everything!” she exclaimed, finally fed up. “I want to know everything about you but you keep pushing me away! It’s like you’re scared to show me the real you. I’ve tried giving you the space and time you need to come to me, but I hate being left in the dark. It’s not fair given how much I’ve shared with you.”
Before he could stop himself, Wihlborg said, “I never asked you to share anything with me.”
His eyes widened with horror as soon as the words left his mouth.
Tori was visibly shaken, her lips trembling as her jaw hung open.
“Shit. Shit. Tori, I-I’m sorry. I didn’t-”
Without saying a word, she hastily put on her boots and grabbed her jacket. He chased after her, not caring if he ruined his nails in the process.
The door slammed in his face as she exited his apartment.
He wanted to go after her, but a small part of him told him that maybe this was a good thing. That her being mad at him and potentially out of his life was for the best.
The truth was that being with Tori was a huge risk. If anyone found out about her, they’d surely use her against him on a job. Wihlborg was already taking measures to make sure nothing happened to her - a thorough background check (which is how he knew about her dad before she even told him), an app on her phone and laptop that allowed him to trace her, and small cameras throughout her apartment.
It was a lot.
He was a lot.
And the last thing he ever wanted to do was hurt her.
He loved her. God help him, he did.
He loved her so much that he didn’t want to lose her, even if it was the right thing to do.
Wihlborg slid to the ground, his back against the door. He never understood how one’s head could conflict with their heart until now. Nail polish be damned, he rested his head in his hands in defeat.
He was unsure of what to do next, so he didn’t do anything. He’d continue to do nothing until it was time for his assignment at the end of the week. At least that would be some sort of distraction. After that… who knew?
His leg was on fire from a bullet scraping him and tripping him up.
His ear was on fire because Dolinski was scolding him like crazy over such a silly mistake.
Finally, his brain was on fire because it was absolutely his fault.
Dolinski managed to lug him up the stairs to his apartment and open the door, muttering, “Mr. Yoga trips over his own feet. Who would’ve thought? I thought that shit was supposed to make you agile or something.”
“Just get me to my bed,” Wihlborg moaned, pointing in the direction of his room.
The two hobbled their way inside, where Dolinski unceremoniously dropped the young man onto the bed. He cried out in agony. Dolinksi mimicked him mockingly before shushing him. “Keep it down, you big baby! You’ve had worse. Now, where’s your first aid kit?”
“Under the sink in the bathroom.”
While his mentor fetched the kit, Wihlborg started undressing. He kept on his undershirt, underwear, and the pair of striped socks Tori got him as an early Christmas gift. They hadn’t talked since their fight a few days prior. He thought wearing the socks would keep her close to him.
“Here we go,” Dolinski announced. The older gentleman held up the kit and helped himself to the edge of the bed. “Nurse Danny to the rescue.”
Wihlborg sat up, his pillows protecting his back from the headboard. He steeled himself as Dolinski got to work. First, he disinfected the scrape, which was near his knee. Next, he added some ointment to help with healing. Then, a wide bandage was applied that covered the whole area while still allowing Wihlborg to bend his knee slightly. The last step involved a cold pack that brought instant relief to the surrounding bruises.
“Want me to kiss it better?”
“Fuck you,” Wihlborg spat out.
Dolinski clicked his teeth. “Well, no lollipop for you.” As he put the kit back in order, he continued, “Honestly, what was with you today? This should’ve been an easy job for you, but you let the guy get his gun out and shoot at you.”
“I got him in the end, didn’t I?”
“Only after you fucked up.”
“I had one off day. It’s not a big deal.”
“It is a big deal because it’s you!”
Wihlborg pinched his nose. He could feel a headache coming on. “Can you just get me some water and leave me alone?”
“You didn’t say ‘please.’”
Thankfully, one annoyed look was all it took to send Dolinski back to the bathroom.
While he waited in bed, Wihlborg searched his pants’ pocket for his phone. No notifications, especially from Tori. He found himself staring at his lock screen. It was a photo of him and her in one of his favorite thrift stores. He had on a crazy hat that she picked out for him and she wore sunglasses she found on a nearby rack. They looked very goofy, and they were very happy. As he looked back down at his socks, he sighed.
He had really fucked things up with her.
“Oh, I get it.”
Wihlborg lifted his head up. Dolinski handed him his glass of water and reclaimed his seat. “I know that look. Lady problems, am I right?”
Wihlborg didn’t agree with him, but he also didn’t deny it.
“Is it that girl you’ve been seeing?” Dolinski probed further.
“Tori,” Wihlborg confessed.
“How bad?”
“You mean how bad am I down for her, or how bad did I mess things up?”
Dolinski shrugged. “Both, I guess.”
Wihlborg took another big swig of water before he answered. “I love her so much, and I messed up so much. She tried to get me to open up more and I shut her down.”
“I know what that’s like.”
“Yeah, right.”
“It’s true,” Danny insisted. “Me and Anata-”
“That’s different,” Wihlborg was quick to interrupt. “You and Anata knew each other for a long time, and she knew what you did and was okay with it. Tori isn’t like that. She’s innocent and sweet. She’s not like us.”
“You don’t know that. For all you know, she could be cool with it.”
“‘Cool with it’?” Wihlborg repeated, incredulousness laced in his tone. “What kind of sane person would be okay with their boyfriend being a hitman?! No, Tori would not be ‘cool with it.’ If she ever found out that I kill people for a living, that I enjoy that shit, she would freak out or break down or-”
He suddenly caught a glimpse of something behind Dolinski’s shoulder. His eyes nearly popped out of their sockets as his brain registered what it was.
Who it was.
It was Tori, standing perfectly still in his bedroom, her mouth agape and her breathing almost nonexistent.
Dolinski turned around and was just as surprised to see her. “Oh. Hello,” he greeted her, trying to act as normal as possible. He got up and held his hand out to her. “I’m Danny Dolinski.”
Tori somehow found the strength and courage to shake his hand. “How do you do?”
“You must be Tori. I’ve heard quite a bit about you.”
“I wish I could say the same about you.” She looked back at Wihlborg. “I thought I’d come by to apologize for the other night. Your door was open, so I let myself in.”
“H-How much did you h-hear?” he stuttered.
“I heard you saying you were a hitman who enjoys killing people.”
He didn’t care that he let out an audible gulp.
He was fucked.
Dolinski didn’t make it better by saying, “Well, it’s late. I better get going.”
Before he could move past Tori, she blocked him. “No,” she said sternly. “Stay. I’m going to have a little chat with my boyfriend. And if he says anything that I don’t like, I’m going to need help cleaning up the mess and burying the body.”
Dolinski raised his eyebrows at her boldness. “Uh… alright then. I’ll be in the living room.”
She nodded and watched as he left the room. She closed and locked the door behind him. She then gradually made her way over to Wihlborg, setting her jacket and purse on the floor and taking up Dolinski’s place next to him.
“Tori, I’m pretty hurt,” Wihlborg stated with caution.
She glanced down at his injury, trying not to let it affect her. “I can see that.”
“All I ask is that you take it easy on me.”
“And all I ask is that you tell me the truth.”
No matter how hard he tried, Wihlborg couldn’t salivate his terribly dry mouth. One of his worst fears was coming true and he was scared out of his mind. He almost wished he was dead… but then Tori would be left alone without knowing who he really was and how he really felt, and that wasn’t fair.
Dolinski was right - it was time to stop acting like a baby.
He took a deep breath. “Okay. What do you want to know?”
Tori took a moment before answering, her face scrunched up in concentration. She had a whole swarm of questions racking her brain, and she was making herself choose which ones were most important, figure out the order in which she wanted to ask them, and decide how best to word them.
Her first question - “Are you really a hitman?”
“Yes.”
Her second question - “Do you really enjoy being a hitman?”
“Yes.”
Her third question - “How many people have you killed?”
“A lot.”
“Give me a number.”
Wihlborg considered this. “I guess… fifty?”
She let the number sink in before moving on. “How did you become a hitman?”
“My dad taught me how to shoot when I was a kid.”
“Your dad? You have parents?”
“Yeah. I’m adopted, though. And they weren’t exactly the best. My dad was an asshole, and my mom…”
Wihlborg bit his lip. Visions of his childhood started coming back to him, and he hated it.
“Anyway, my dad more or less taught me how to kill. It felt natural, good even. When I left home… no, I ran away. I made it over here and met this woman, Opal. She was in charge of all the hitmen in the U.K. She took me on and made Dolinski my mentor.”
“Is he a hitman, too?”
“Yeah, but he doesn’t do much these days. He’s got a bum hand and takes too many painkillers with alcohol. And if you ask me-”
“Wihlborg,” Tori interrupted him.
He quickly remembered himself. “Sorry.”
“So, you both work for people who tell you who to kill and you do it?”
“Not exactly. A lot of crazy shit went down with this rival organization in Ireland, and almost all of our people were killed. Dolinski and I managed to take some of them out. We’ve been doing freelance stuff ever since.”
“I see.” She paused to take his story in. “I thought I heard you say the name ‘Anata’ earlier. The woman from the karaoke bar?”
Wihlborg nodded. “She’s with Dolinski.”
“She knows about all of this?”
“She was there when it happened.”
“Who else knows?”
“No one.”
Tori raised an eyebrow.
“I swear, no one else knows. I was telling you the truth when I said I don’t have many friends.” He sighed. “I also haven’t had that many girlfriends.”
“I can tell.”
A hollow chuckle escaped him.
“What changed?” she asked.
Wihlborg looked up at her. “I met you. I got to know you. And I wanted to be around you all the time, even though I knew it was wrong. But you’re so smart and beautiful and amazing that I didn’t care. I wanted you in my life.” He tentatively reached for her hand and held it tight. “I still want you. I thought I could keep you safe by keeping you in the dark… and installing cameras around your place and a tracking app on your phone. I’m sorry. No. Actually, I’m not sorry about that. But I am sorry I didn’t tell you any of this and… and honestly it may not make any sense… Fuck, I don’t know if it makes much sense to me, but… I love you. I love you so much, Tori.”
He hoped his face conveyed even a fraction of the desperation he was feeling.
Tori lowered her gaze to take in their joined hands.
“You’re right. This doesn’t make sense.”
His face fell at her reaction.
“But it also makes total sense.”
Wihlborg tried (and probably failed) not to appear too hopeful as she went on, “I get why you didn’t tell me you were a hitman right away. That shit would probably scare anyone off. But, Wihlborg, I’ve told you I’m a bit weird myself. This is way weird, but I think I could’ve handled it. Had you told me sooner, I probably could’ve helped out with, like, cleaning your stuff or looking up info on someone or making sure you’re all nice and comfy after a long day-”
“Wait,” he stopped her, his eyebrows knitted together in confusion, “are you saying that you’re more mad that I didn’t tell you I’m a killer than me actually being a killer?”
She answered with a simple “Yes.”
“And you actually know how to do all that stuff?”
“Well… no. But I can learn. You can teach me! It’d be a cute couple thing we do together.”
“‘Cute couple thing,’” he said to himself. Why was that such a perfect response from her? “Dolinski was right.”
“What?”
Wihlborg shook his head. “Nothing.”
He squeezed Tori’s hand. His girlfriend. The woman that was supposedly okay with his work and was even willing to go above and beyond to help him out.
“God, I missed you these past few days.”
She squeezed his hand back. “I missed you, too,” she admitted.
“Please don’t leave me again. I’ll do anything for you.”
She looked him dead in the eyes. “Anything?”
“Anything.”
She got right in his face as she spoke. “I am nowhere near done with my questions. Going forward, whenever I ask you something about you or your past, I want you to answer me. No more secrets. No more lies.”
“I promise I will tell you anything and everything you want to know,” Wihlborg agreed.
“And since you’re keeping tabs on me, I want to keep tabs on you.”
“Okay.”
“And tomorrow you’re going to take me out to breakfast and we are going to move forward. Together.”
The biggest smile grew on his face. “Deal.”
She smiled, too, and leaned forward to press a kiss to his lips. He really had missed her. Her touch. Her taste.
Tori must’ve been as desperate as him because she slowly climbed over to the side that wasn’t injured and pulled Wihlborg closer to deepen the kiss. “You know,” he said against her lips, “strenuous activity can really impede the healing process.”
She hummed in acknowledgement but made no attempt to stop. Neither did he. He actually turned slightly so he could card one hand through her hair and place the other on her thigh, which gradually made its way to her hip and ass. Her hands were grazing his chest, with one inching down to his private area.
“Um…” a voice called out, making the young couple gasp and whip their heads towards the closed bedroom door. “I hope all is well in there.”
“Yes, Mr. Dolinski," Tori responded. “Everything is fine.”
“Good! So, it’s getting late and Anata will probably be worried about me. I’m going to take off now.”
“Okay!” She turned to Wihlborg and said with a grin, “I’ll walk you out.”
He tightened his grip on her, but she didn’t look like she was going to back down.
“No, no!” Dolinski said. “That’s not necessary.”
“It’s no trouble!” Tori managed to get out of Wihlborg’s embrace and jump out of bed to the door. He cursed his limited mobility as he reached out like a toddler for his favorite toy.
“Don’t go!” he whispered with intensity.
From the door, she twirled around and said seductively, “Don’t come.” And just like that, she was gone.
Wihlborg’s head thudded against the wall, which made him release a shaky laugh.
If his job didn’t kill him first, Tori certainly would.

Tori looked at herself in the mirror, trying out different poses. Her boots allowed her to effortlessly spin around in giddiness. After a few seconds of feeling dizzy, she forced herself to stand still and take in the moment.
She was going out with her coworkers that night.
It would’ve seemed completely normal to anyone else, but for Tori it was a big step.
Her mind replayed the story of how she scored her invitation:
Tori happened to catch Roger and Dara talking in a corner of the office. Her eyes stayed glued to her computer screen in an attempt to appear normal as her ears strained to pick up on their conversation.
“You still coming tonight?” Roger asked.
“Of course!” Dara exclaimed. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
“Do you think Rupert’s will have any specialty drinks?”
“Maybe. It is fall.”
“Bring on the pumpkin!”
The two laughed and were about to walk off together. That’s when Tori decided to pounce.
“Hey, you two!” she called out. In the second it took for them to turn around, she was already in front of them. “I couldn’t help but overhear you talking about drinks. Are you going out tonight?”
Roger and Dara looked at each other hesitantly. It seemed like they were trying to telepathically communicate with each other over whether or not to come clean. When they looked back at her, they plastered on some smiles.
“Yes,” Roger admitted. “We’re going to Rupert’s.”
“Rupert’s? I’ve never heard of it.”
“It’s a place in SoHo,” Dara explained.
Tori gasped. “Ooo, I have heard about SoHo! You know, I’ve been here for almost a year and I’ve never been there? Sounds like fun! Is anyone else going?”
“Um…” Roger trailed off, trying to silently communicate with Dara again. She nodded, giving him permission to answer. “Selene and Patrick.”
“Wow, the whole gang!” Tori giggled, and the two echoed nervously. “May I tag along?”
That shut them up quick.
They stared blankly at her, perhaps hoping if things were awkward enough she would apologize and tell them to forget it. She did not. She stared right back at them, her expression full of hope.
It was Roger who folded first. “Sure. Why not?”
Tori beamed so brightly she almost couldn’t see the death glare Dara sent his way.
“Great! Can you send me the address and time?”
“Of course.”
There was a pregnant pause.
“Right now, please?” Tori clarified.
“Oh, yes! Right. Dara?”
Tori’s pretty sure someone could’ve roasted a marshmallow from how hot Dara’s face appeared. She slowly pulled out her phone and typed out the information.
Once Tori received the message, she squealed. “Fantastic! See you tonight!”
As soon as work was over, she rushed home and took an insane amount of time making sure she looked good for her night out. Washing and fixing her hair. Shaving. Applying a fresh coat of makeup. Picking out the right clothes, jewelry, and perfume (she didn’t usually wear perfume, but she decided to bust it out for the special occasion).
She took a deep breath in.
She knew that Dara and Roger were probably bickering about whether it was a good idea to invite her out tonight.
She knew they deliberately left her out of the company’s unofficial monthly meet-ups at Rupert’s.
She knew that for whatever reason everyone at work didn’t want to know her beyond the walls of the building.
Tori was determined to change all of that. With a determined nod, she pulled herself together, grabbed her purse, and waltzed out the door. It was time to have fun with her (hopefully) new friends.
Selene cooly took a sip of her drink before retorting, “You would’ve done the same thing!”
“No, I wouldn’t!”
“Yes, you would’ve,” Roger and Patrick said in unison.
Everyone laughed at the scene they were creating.
Everyone except Tori.
It all started when she first stepped foot into Rupert’s, which was a much fancier place than she anticipated. A chandelier hung from the ceiling. Bottles of vintage champagne lined the walls. Instrumental piano music played on the speakers. It was all elegant and sophisticated, and Tori was not used to it.
She immediately got looks from those seated next to the door. They all had on lovely dresses and slacks and polished shoes. It was a stark contrast to her mini skirt, unicorn shirt, and knee-high boots.
As she was led to her coworkers’ table, she mentally kicked herself for not looking the place up prior. She just assumed that it’d be a bar and grill or something. Isn’t there where most people went after work to let loose? Plus, she was so damn excited to be going out with friends…
Said “friends” were not as excited to see her. All of their faces were a mix of disgust and confusion at her appearance.
Tori tried to play it off with a smile. The night was young. There was plenty of time to turn things around.
A drink was in order to help settle her nerves.
The problem was that Tori didn’t drink alcohol.
So, while the rest of the table ordered cocktails, she sipped water. And while they ate dishes with names that Tori didn’t even want to attempt to pronounce, she munched on chicken tenders and fries from the kids’ menu. She could feel everyone’s judgemental eyes on her. It was getting harder for her to swallow her (really delicious) food.
She decided to put her mouth to better use by talking. That’s what nights like these were for. Talking. Gossiping. Laughing. Generating positive energy amongst people. That would help for sure.
But she never got the chance.
Any time Tori tried to contribute to the conversation, she was either ignored (no one even acknowledged her when she tried to talk about her own embarrassing one-night stand) or shut down (Dara told her this wasn’t a book club, so she didn’t need to talk about what she was reading at the moment). After a while, she simply gave up and became a fly on the wall to Selene talking about a “rude” client.
“He deserved it. He had the nerve to criticize my design. The man has no taste, I’m telling you.”
Tori remembered sneaking a glance at Selene’s web design. It seemed pretty bold for a man wanting to sell his wife’s needlepoint designs of animals.
“I’m so sorry, darling,” Patrick said sympathetically, patting Selene’s shoulder.
As the entire table went on about this client and that project, Tori couldn’t bring herself to even react to them anymore. It finally dawned on her that she had been wasting too much energy trying to impress people who obviously didn’t care about her in any capacity. All it did was make her tired.
As sad as it was, she should’ve taken the hint long ago.
She ultimately decided to cut her losses and leave. As she got up from the table with her things, a thought occurred to her.
What if she didn’t tell the table she was leaving?
Could they be so disinterested in her that she could say anything and they wouldn’t notice her absence?
“I’m going to the bathroom,” she announced.
Nothing.
“I’ll be back in a bit.”
Nothing.
“Maybe I can convince the waiter to join me in there.”
A round of laughter. “Oh, Selene, you really are the worst!” Dara playfully chided the other woman.
Tori gave a tight-lipped smile. Message received.
She headed in the opposite direction, making sure to take care of her bill before stepping out into the night.
As she walked along the sidewalk, she tried setting up a ride to pick her up. The reception was pretty spotty in her area, however, and after a few minutes she gave up. So much for going home and stuffing her face with brownie batter gelato while she watched the latest-
Suddenly, Tori felt a couple of raindrops hit her face. Before she could properly register them, the universe decided to make it pour down on her. “SHIT!” she shouted, but was drowned out by a big crack of thunder.
One more thing to make the night a total disaster.
She brought her jacket up over her as a makeshift umbrella and scurried along to find actual cover. Her eyes scanned around frantically before landing on a bright neon sign - “The Queen of Hearts Karaoke Bar.” As quickly and safely as she could, she raced over and stepped inside the establishment.
Tori took a minute to get dried off and acclimated to the low lighting before going all the way inside. She braced herself in case this place was anything like Rupert’s. The last thing she wanted was to be humiliated again.
Her focus went to the bar first, where there were sodas and beer that she could pronounce with ease. She moved up to the ceiling where twinkly lights hung and reminded her of stars. All the tables and booths were filled with people looking for a night on the town rather than a night at the opera. Finally, there was a stage in the center of the room where some brave souls were going up and singing their hearts out.
Tori had been in there for two seconds and already she felt more at ease than she had been the entire time she was at Rupert’s. She let out a sigh of relief.
“Hey,” she heard a voice addressing her. She came face to face with an Asian woman. “Are you alright?” she asked.
“Yes?” Tori tried.
The woman raised an eyebrow, unconvinced.
“Yes,” Tori said again with more conviction. “Sorry. I was just out and then it started to rain so I came in here and… I haven’t been having the best night, actually, but I’m feeling better now. Really.” She let out a small smile that the woman politely returned.
“Glad to hear it.” She held out her hand. “I’m Anata. I’m the manager here.”
“Hi. I’m Tori.” It wasn’t until the two were shaking hands that Tori realized she was still very wet from the rain. She pulled back and let out a huff. “Sorry! Where’s the restroom?”
“The first door down that hallway.”
Tori thanked her and made her way there.
Miraculously, the restroom was empty. It was also communal, which meant plenty of space for Tori to fix herself up. She dried off her hair and body as best she could with the air dryer and washed her face so it was free of all makeup. When she was done, she stared at herself in the mirror.
She was right back where she started. Alone.
However, she found that she wasn’t that sad about it, at least not anymore. If the alternative to being alone was being amongst bad company, she’d rather go with the former option, at least for the night.
And the evening wasn’t over yet. There was still time to make the most of things. And at a karaoke bar, something that Tori had never done before.
Her smile started to get brighter.
She looked better.
She felt better.
And she would be damned if this night didn’t turn out better.
Wihlborg wondered how he ever thought Anata’s bar was a brothel. It wasn’t his usual scene, but it wasn’t that bad. He still wished he was back at his place; he could be doing his nightly exercises before bed. Anata insisted he come, though.
“You need to let loose a little,” she said for the umpteenth time as he sipped his water. “You’re never going to make any friends if you stay clammed up like you do.”
“I’ve got friends.”
“Me and Danny. Somehow heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.”
He shrugged. Anata sighed at his lack of response or care. “I have to go now. Just think about what I said, please.” She gave his shoulder a squeeze before running off.
Wihlborg tried to consider her advice, but it all led back to the same conclusion. He simply didn’t have the time (or disposition, if he was being honest) for relationships of any kind. He was lucky that he met Dolinski and Anata when he did and that they were who they were, which happened to vibe with how he was. They were enough for him.
He truly didn’t want for anything.
Right?
He shifted in his seat at the bar to take a look around the place. Everyone already had their person or group to enjoy the evening with. He could try approaching someone and make himself a part of their conversation but it usually turned out awkward, especially with the ladies. (He thanked God that Anata only talked about friends and not about getting laid.)
Wihlborg downed the rest of his water, finally resolute about being alone for another night. He grabbed his jacket and was in the middle of putting it on when something stopped him.
Or rather, someone.
It was a girl standing on the opposite side of the room, a drink in her hands. Her focus was on the ceiling. He looked up to see what she was staring at.
The light fixture. The nice-looking albeit ordinary light fixture.
He moved back down to her. Her eyes had a faraway look to them, as if the lights had her in a trance. Her mouth was slightly parted in awe.
What could she find so fascinating in the lights? he wondered.
Her body swayed slightly to the latest song being sung, and the sequins of her skirt would often catch the light. Her long hair lightly bounced with her. It was… mesmerizing. She was mesmerizing.
“Mesmerizing”? What the fuck? You don’t even know her!
Right when Wihlborg was snapping himself out of whatever daze he unexpectedly found himself in, the girl got a strange look on her face like she was snapping herself out of her own trance. She took a quick look around before taking off. She made her way over to the steps that led up to the VIP section. It was currently closed with a sign and rope. That didn’t stop her, though. With another sneaky glance around the room, she lifted the rope up and ran upstairs.
Wihlborg’s senses were on high alert now. As inconspicuously as possible, he walked over to the stairs and let himself through. Thankfully, no one stopped him.
He slowly made his way up. When he almost got to the top, he peeked over. His hand went straight to where his gun was… or should’ve been if Anata hadn’t instructed him to leave it at home.
“Just for one night,” her voice echoed in his mind.
Wihlborg rolled his eyes and began coming up with a plan in case the girl tried anything.
However, she didn’t seem to be up to much other than sitting in one of the lounge couches listening to someone sing a depressing song. Her jacket was off to the side and her drink was resting on the small table in front of her. Her elbows were on her knees so her hands could hold her head up. She took a deep breath in and audibly let it out. She stared straight ahead, even though at her height she couldn’t see over the edge. Gone was her sense of wonder. She was… sad.
It didn’t suit her.
What do you know or care?
Wihlborg hushed himself up so he could study her.
What all happened that led her to this moment?
Why wasn’t she with anyone?
Did she have anyone?
Did she have a boyfriend?
Whoa! No! Don’t even go there!
The music soon changed to something more upbeat. The girl perked up. She must’ve recognized the song because she let out a little squeal and jumped up. Her sense of wonder came back as she got into the rhythm and danced. She slid here and there, shaking her hips and moving her arms above her head.
Wihlborg smiled. This is what suited her - being happy.
Weirdo.
He ignored his inner voice and listened to his feet, which were telling him to move up more to get a better look.
After doing a few twirls, the girl stopped and looked right at him. She gasped. “Oh, my God! I’m so sorry! I was- I was waiting for… um… you know what? It doesn’t matter. I shouldn’t be up here, I know. I’m sorry.”
She scooped up her jacket and drink, making a beeline for the stairs. Wihlborg didn’t let her pass, however. He stopped her by holding his hands out.
“No, no, no!”
She froze in place, looking at him expectantly.
His words came out more awkward than hers as he tried to explain, “You’re-You’re not… You don’t have to… You’re alright. I-I don’t work here. I mean, I have a friend who works here and she… Actually, I really don’t know if… It should be alright, I guess. You should be alright. I hope you’re alright. You… I…”
As he rambled on, her face went from confusion to suspicion to understanding and acceptance. She let out a giggle that made all thoughts fly out of his head. She had such a pretty voice.
After she calmed down, there was a silence between them.
“I’m-“
“My name is-“
“Oh, you go-“
“No, you-“
They each pressed their lips together, afraid of making the first move. It wasn’t long before another round of giggles escaped her. This time, Wihlborg joined in.
“I’m Tori.”
“Wihlborg.”
“Wihlborg?”
Her one-word question sounded less like “You’re fucking name is Wihlborg?” and more “Am I saying that right?” He nodded either way.
“Somehow that suits you perfectly,” she commented.
Wihlborg did something he rarely did at her compliment - he blushed. “Thanks. Yours, too.”
She rewarded him with a smile, which made his cheeks heat up more. He hoped to a God that may or may not exist that she couldn’t see it.
She set her stuff back down on the table before asking, “So, Wihlborg, what’s a nice guy like you doing in a place like this?”
He let out an involuntary snort. What the hell? his voice came back, only this time to help him not look like an idiot in front of the pretty, funny girl. Be cool.
He quickly straightened up, clearing his throat. “Oh, I’m just hanging around. You?”
She shrugged, playing with her hair as she spoke. “Same.”
As Tori continued messing with the ends of her hair, Wihlborg noticed her nails. They were an interesting metallic color. Before he could stop himself, he pointed them out. “That’s a nice color.”
She immediately stopped and looked at her fingernails. “Oh, they’re not real. They’re press-ons. But thanks.” She stole a glance at his nails. They were all black save for one finger on one hand painted orange and another on the other hand blue. “You?”
He held up both hands. “Real. I do them myself.”
Tori nodded in admiration, stepping closer. “Cool. I really like the colors you chose. Orange and blue are complementary, you know.”
“‘Complementary,’ huh?” he asked, impressed with her jargon.
She grinned. “I know a lot about art. It’s part of my job. I design websites. It’s why I don’t get my nails done. I know they’d be chipped within a day with all the click-clacking I do.” She mimicked typing at a computer to prove her point.
“Smart.”
“What about you? Why do you do your own nails?”
“Because I like it.”
“And your job doesn’t object?”
“No. They’re pretty cool about it.” It’s hard to object when you’re dead.
“So, what do you do?”
“I’m in medicine,” Wihlborg said, the answer coming naturally like it did when he practiced in front of his mirror.
“Medicine? That’s a good job. Is that how you can afford your bling?”
He was confused until he realized she was talking about his rings. He chuckled. “Sort of. These actually didn’t cost a lot. I found them in a thrift store.”
“Oh, you thrift?”
“Sometimes.”
“Is all of this,” she gestured to his clothes, “thrifted?”
“Pretty much.” He did a slow turn so Tori could take him all in. He usually didn’t care about what other people thought of his looks, but right now he hoped she liked what she saw.
“Very nice,” she said.
He took a quick bow to hide his sigh of relief. That earned him another giggle.
“And what about this little thing?”
Wihlborg was about to ask what she meant when she suddenly got way too close to him. Her hand seemed to be going for the toy car around his neck. He instinctively clutched it.
“Oh, I’m sorry!” she said bashfully, pulling away. “I didn’t mean to-”
“No, it’s alright! I’m sorry!” He fiddled with his makeshift necklace as he explained, “This is actually something from when I was a kid. It means a lot to me.”
She smiled softly. “I understand. That’s very sweet.”
Wihlborg tried to steer the conversation back to the present. “So, um, do you thrift?”
Tori considered her outfit and shook her head. “No. All my stuff comes from boutiques. I figure since I’m an adult with adult money, why shouldn’t I treat myself to some new stuff?” As soon as the words left her mouth, she cringed. “I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to imply that I shop better than you!”
“Hey, hey, it’s cool. I get it.” Wihlborg put both his hands up to calm her down again. “You look cute.”
She blinked at his words. Thinking she thought them too soft, it was his turn to cringe. “Uh, I mean, pretty. Beautiful. Gorgeous. Stunning. Am I missing one?”
“Wihlborg? Wihlborg!” He shut his mouth to let her speak. “Thank you.”
He didn’t trust his voice or words, so he simply nodded.
They both noticed that another karaoke song was playing. Tori’s face lit up. “Oh, I love this song! It takes me back to my high school dances.”
Wihlborg shoved his hands in his pockets awkwardly. “I’ll take your word for it.”
“You never went to your high school dance?” she asked.
“Not really. It was never really my thing.” She frowned at the information. “Please, don’t feel bad for me.”
“I can’t help it! I’m just imagining you sitting alone in your room watching TV with a forlorn look on your face.”
He twisted his face to create the image in an attempt to make her laugh. He was successful. His chest swelled with pride.
Even though the lights were rather dim, he could make out the mischievous glint in her deep, brown orbs. She took a step back and held out her hand.
“Wihlborg, would you do me the honor of joining me in a dance?”
His jaw dropped in surprise. He looked between her face and hand, trying to determine if she was joking or not. She stood her ground. “My offer can go on all night but the song won’t. If you want to do this, I suggest right now.”
He wordlessly took off his jacket before taking her hand.
Tori immediately took both of his hands and placed them on her hips. She was too busy placing hers around his neck to notice him stiffening up. She definitely noticed when she pulled him in so they were almost chest to chest. “Relax,” she told him. She then got serious. “And make no mistake, if you try anything, I’m not afraid to put these press-ons to use.” She held out her hand the way a cat would before it attacked its prey. That got Wihlborg to chuckle out a breath he didn’t know he was holding in.
“Yes, ma’am,” he answered. Tori bit her lip at that, and he briefly let his mind consider that she was as affected by him as he was with her.
With the understanding between them, she resumed her position and guided him. They merely swayed back and forth, but it was more than Wihlborg had done in his whole life. They stared at each other as they moved, getting lost in the other’s gaze.
“This is nice,” he whispered, worried that if he spoke any louder their bubble would burst.
She hummed in agreement. “You’re a good dance partner.”
“Because you’re doing most of the work.”
“Well, why don’t we switch things up a bit?”
Tori took one of her hands and placed it in Wihlborg’s, bringing them up a little above their heads. He got the hint and spun her around. He couldn’t help but drink in her entire being. When she faced him again, she took a couple steps back, still holding onto him, before turning back in. Her back was now fully pressed into his chest.
She turned her head around and whispered, “This is the part where you dip me. Don’t let me fall.”
“Never.”
Wihlborg kept his word by having a good grip on Tori’s hand and back. She leaned backwards, her foot sticking out slightly. They held that pose for a total of two seconds before he pulled her back up to sway some more. They cheered at their success.
“This is the most fun I’ve had in a long time,” she said.
He replied, “Your friends are sure to be jealous.”
Tori became real quiet. Her eyes were cast down to the floor. It was like all the energy had drained from her.
Wihlborg was sure he made a mistake. “Hey. Did I say something wrong?”
She shook her head. “No, it’s okay. It’s okay.”
Her gaze flitted around. Her lips were pressed into a thin line, like they were trying to keep a secret from being revealed.
She did it anyway.
“I actually don’t have many… I don’t have any friends. Or a boyfriend. Or family. I don’t even have a pet. I’m all alone… and I don’t know why exactly. I mean, I try to be a good person, you know? To be interesting, funny, talented, smart, kind, pretty, whatever, but there must be something in me that… repels people. And the more I try not to be alone, the more alone I get. Like tonight. I managed to get invited to a little get-together with my coworkers at this really fancy place and it was so freaking awkward. A bit of it was on me, I’ll admit that. But my coworkers didn’t even try to make me feel included. It’s like I wasn’t even there. And then I came here, and I started looking around and looking at the lights hanging from the ceiling, and…”
Tori forced herself to look up at Wihlborg. “And a really dark thought occurred to me.”
They had stopped moving. It seemed like everything stopped moving. He found himself on the edge of his seat.
She took a deep breath.
“I thought about what would happen if the ceiling fell on me and killed me. Who would care, or notice? I’ve been alone for a lot of my life, and for the most part I’ve been fine with it. But lately it’s starting to feel lonely and it’s such a sad, fucked-up thing to feel. I just… I want somebody.”
Wihlborg’s mouth hung open at her confession.
Suddenly, that strange look came across her face again. She took a huge step back. “Jesus Christ! I don’t know why I’m telling you this! It’s morbid and stupid and a lot and… Is it hot in here?” She rushed over to her drink and took a big sip.
“Alcohol is really bad for you,” Wihlborg blurted out. He could hear the sipping noise stop. Well, way to go Wihlborg, he scolded himself. Here she is, having a moment, and you had to go say something that-
“This isn’t alcohol.”
He got out of his head long enough to do a double-take.
“What?”
“It’s not alcohol. It’s water.” Tori held her glass out so he could see for himself. “I don’t drink.”
“You don’t?” She shook her head. “Why?” Because this situation needs to be even more uncomfortable.
She opened her mouth to answer, but promptly shut it. Once she had her thoughts together, she opened back up to say, “That is trauma for another day. And, look, I don’t want you to think that I’m depressed or suicidal or whatever. I’m fine. Really! I sometimes have little moments like this. But I get over them. I got over tonight. I came to a karaoke bar, which is a first. I got to listen to some good music and dance…”
She softened up as she looked at him. “And I met you.”
All he did was stand there, a total blank.
“But I don’t want you to think that I’m expecting you to be my boyfriend or even my friend or anything! This has been nice, and I thank you for putting up with me. There are probably plenty of other things you could be doing with plenty of other-”
“No.”
Tori froze. “No?”
“No.”
Wihlborg didn’t know what exactly was happening, or whether it was good or bad, but he decided to join her and take the plunge.
“I’ve got two friends, and they’re both older than me. Well, one is way older than me. But that’s it. That’s all I’ve got. And I thought that’s all I needed. I don’t really have the time to meet people, and I’m not great at talking to them anyway. The only reason I’m here tonight is because my other friend thinks I need to socialize more. I thought she was just being dramatic. But then I saw you, and you looked so… I don’t know. You caught my attention. And I followed you up here and- First of all, I should admit that that is creepy as hell and I’m so sorry. I don’t typically do that. I’m doing a lot of things I’ve never done before. Feeling things. Saying things. This is probably the longest I’ve ever talked to anyone ever. And it’s honestly been fun for me, too. Because of you. There’s nothing wrong with you, Tori. Not a damn thing. You are smart and funny and charming and… fucking amazing. And anyone who can’t see or appreciate that is a moron.”
Wihlborg didn’t realize he had been inching closer to Tori until he was right near her face. He glanced down at her lips. They seemed soft. The idea of kissing her flashed through his mind. He distracted himself by going up to her eyes, which were filled with tears.
She inhaled sharply, determined not to let any of them fall. When she breathed back out, she said with a smile, “Thank you, Wihlborg.”
He smiled back. “You’re welcome.”
My God, she is really beautiful.
There was a silence between them, but it was more comfortable this time around. It was two kindred spirits finding and accepting each other.
Wihlborg was surprised that he was leaning into Tori, even more so when he saw her doing the same.
He was actually going to do it.
He was going to kiss her.
He was a grown man but he was acting like a teenager with his heavy breathing and heartbeat, both of which he tried to keep under control.
Their bodies were pressed right up against each other now.
They closed their eyes.
They puckered their lips.
And then-
“Hey!” an angry voice shouted at them. “What do you think you’re doing up here?!”
Tori and Wihlborg pulled back in shock, with him standing in front of her to protect her from any danger.
There was no danger, though. It was only Anata.
She was just as shocked as them once she fully took in the scene in front of her. “Oh, God! I’m- I’m so sorry!” she stuttered. “I didn’t realize… I noticed the rope was off and thought someone was…”
Wihlborg narrowed his eyes at her.
Anata cleared her throat. “Apologies. I didn’t mean to intrude. Carry on.”
“Actually,” Tori piped up, stepping in front of her protector, “it’s my fault. I came up here and he came with me and we just got carried away. I’m sorry. I think I’m going to go now.”
“What? No, please!” Wihlborg begged. “You don’t have to. Right, Anata?” He shot the woman another look that demanded that she help him.
“No, really. I need to go,” Tori insisted. “I’ve got to be up early for work. Websites to create and all that.”
He could only stand there and watch as she collected her things and picked up her glass to return downstairs. He could barely hide his disappointment.
Tori caught it and came back up to him. “You have a phone, right?”
His eyebrows furrowed. “Yeah. You?”
“Yeah. Here.” She quickly took out her phone and motioned for him to do the same. Once they unlocked their devices, they switched. “Put in your number.” He did as he was told and watched as she typed in hers.
When they swapped back, she sent him a little message.
TORI: Hi!
Wihlborg chuckled, his energy picking up already.
WIHLBORG: Hi.
He had the pleasure of hearing her laugh one more time. A kiss would’ve made the victory even sweeter, he thought to himself. But I’ll take what I can get.
When Tori leaned in to press said kiss to his lips, he figured she was either some sort of mind reader or one of the boldest people he’d ever met.
She pulled back to say, “I’ll let you know when I make it home alright.”
He hummed in a daze.
“You’ll do the same?”
He hummed again.
“Okay, then. Good night, Wihlborg.”
“Good night, Tori,” he managed to vocalize. He watched as she walked away.
She momentarily stopped at Anata to say, “I’m sorry again. You have a really nice bar, and I had a great time.”
“I’m glad,” Anata said. “Hope to see you again.”
Tori nodded and swiftly made her exit.
Only when she was out of sight and earshot did Anata turn back to Wihlborg. A look of amusement graced her face. “About time someone made a new friend.”

Summary: This is a story about a hitman, a girl, and the lessons they learn about having a successful romantic relationship. But first, some introductions.
Format: Multi-Chapter
Word Count: 487
Genre: Romance
Additional Tags/Warnings: this is pretty niche; apologies for anyone who is OOC; takes place after the movie; Wihlborg is over eighteen here; nothing but backstory; strong language; possible inaccuracies when it comes to job(s)
Author’s Note: This was one of those ideas that was swirling around in my brain for a good long while, but when it came time to write it it was hard to get the vision in my brain as a description on paper. The only reason this chapter was so easy for me is because I was just repeating stuff I already thought about when I was creating my OC. I hope you enjoy it and everything that comes after!
P.S. My OC is “portrayed” by Gideon Adlon.
P.P.S. MY OC IS THE ONLY THING I OWN!!! I DO NOT OWN ANYONE OR ANYTHING FROM OLD GUY!!!
Victoria “Tori” Wright had been on her own for a long time.
Growing up, her mom was M.I.A physically and her dad was M.I.A emotionally, favoring spending time at the bar than with his own daughter. Either because of them or in spite of them, Tori promised to rise above her circumstances.
She busted her ass off in high school to graduate top of her class, got a full ride to a college that was miles away from home, and worked even harder to graduate again with honors. It all led to a job offer from a well-known company that created and managed websites. She immediately accepted the position, and within a year was recognized as top talent and asked to join their offices in London.
Everything was really looking up for Tori… that is until the company got raided for failing to comply with finance laws that were difficult for her to wrap her head around.
Being that she was young and alone in a foreign place with barely any money and no one close to ask for help, it was a scary time for Tori. Luckily, she found work at a smaller company that also developed websites. It didn’t pay as much as her previous job, but it was enough for her to get her own place, get some new clothes to help her be the bold and confident person she knew she was capable of being, and purchase as many books as her heart desired to fill in the time she wasn’t staring at a computer.
Tori was finally happy… well, almost happy.
If only there was someone she could share her happiness with. Someone who was out-of-the-box like her.
Wihlborg never liked to talk about his past. He preferred to look forward.
He looked forward when he moved (ran) away from his abusive adopted parents and ended up in London.
He looked forward when his unique skills and mindset were spotted by someone who promised him a new, better life as a hitman.
He tried looking forward when he got teamed up with a cantankerous old man who was supposed to be the best in the business but had a series of health (and possibly mental) problems.
He tried looking forward when their jobs and lives nearly went to shit until they worked together to take back control.
He looked forward when he realized he could still be a hitman, but this time as a freelancer.
He looked forward whenever he hung out with the old man and his girlfriend, who were now as close as family to him.
So far, Wihlborg never had a reason to want more from his life.
That was about to change, however, once he met someone. Someone who’s crazy lined up nicely with his.

My first fully-planned, multi-chapter story with an original character (“portrayed” by Gideon Adlon) and based on a movie not that many people may know about - Old Guy with Christoph Waltz, Lucy Liu, and (perhaps most importantly because the story focuses on his character) Cooper Hoffman.
You’re getting the prologue and chapter 1 today, and a new chapter each day until the finale on Friday. Their names and links are as follows:
Prologue
Chapter 1 - Friendship
Chapter 2 - Honesty
Chapter 3 - Passion
Chapter 4 - Protection
Chapter 5 - Commitment

how are you gonna be 31 and posting fandom content bro leave it to the teenagers
People 10 and 20 years older than me are writing your favorite fanfics, and drawing your favorite characters. You'd have no fandom without the people you think are 'too old' to have hobbies.
Who the heck do you think started modern day fandom with Star Trek? It sure wasn't teenagers.
Who do you think makes professional quality fanart and fanfic? People who've been practicing it for ten, fifteen, twenty years!
Or even people who've been practicing it for thirty, forty or fifty!!!!!
example: Diane Duane. Currently in her seventies. Star Trek fangirl since the original run. Goddess-level Ascended Fan who has created official tie-in works in more forms of media than pretty much anyone else alive, possibly even Rodenberry himself because they didn't have audiobooks or video games when he was with us. Writer of Spock's World, The Wounded Sky, Doctor's Orders in TOS. Co-writer of TNG script Where no one has gone before, and writer of the tie-in novel Dark Mirror among others. Writer of a half-dozen Star Trek Comics. She has adapted her own work for audio, has written for the Star Trek manga series, has written short Trek fiction for anthologies, and plotted and wrote the video game Star Trek: the Kobayashi Alternative.
In other fandoms, she was a personal friend of Terry Pratchett himself. As a scriptwriter, she's also worked in fandoms like Scooby-Doo, Transformers, My Little Pony, Gargoyles, Batman: The Animated Series, Spiderman: Unlimited (and a trilogy of tie-in novels still in print) and Barbie: Fairytopia. ...And that's just cherry-picking her imdb page.
While she can't give out specific details due to Obvious Reasons, she's still active in the Sherlock BBC fandom - and there's a specific subset of her fans who love guessing which of the legendary fanfics might be her work (I am not one of them, BTW, as it is None Of My Business. I'm old-school that way).
Fandom is not for teenagers. Fandom is for everyone of good heart and enthusiasm for a good (or even bad! No judgement!) story.
Just wait until you grow up, Anonymous OP. Wonder how long it'll take you to change your mind.
...Some days when you're feeling tired and sad, and wondering "what the hell is the point... why am I even bothering?"... it's nice to be reminded that you're supported.
A couple months back, I said I was gearing up for a big project. It’s now time to reveal what it is.
Originally, I was going to write another multi-chapter story. I’m not doing that anymore.
.
.
.
.
I’m writing TWO multi-chapter stories!!!
😮😱🤯
Now, you may be wondering what makes my upcoming multi-chapter stories so different than my first one, which happened more or less by accident and features Johnny Storm (read parts ONE and TWO and THREE here if you’re curious). If you're really interested in knowing more, read below the cut:
- The first will be about the forgotten Old Guy, and the second will be about the unforgettable The Long Walk. (Yes, both are centered around Cooper Hoffman characters.)
- The OG story will be a sequel featuring an original character with a name and backstory and everything. The TLW story will be set in an alternate universe with a character from the book that didn’t make it into the movie.
- Both will have developed worlds and appearances from other original characters/characters you know and love (most of which have been face-claimed by me; apologies upfront if my ideas don’t match yours).
- OG will have 6 parts. TLW will have 4.
- All parts of each story will be dropped at once - OG at the end of July, and TLW at the end of August.
More information about each story will be shared later. I hope you’re ready! 😁
P.S. If you’re good, I may throw in a bonus surprise in-between stories! 😉
Summary: Wihlborg needs to concentrate on his latest assignment. Instead, he’s fantasizing about you while you sleep.
Format: Short Story
Word Count: 1.3k
Genre: Smut
Additional Tags/Warnings: no use of (Y/N); Wihlborg is over eighteen; strong language; sexual situations; slight somnophilia; masturbation; morning sex; vaginal sex; reader is on birth control; “baby” is the nickname of the day
Author’s Note: I don’t know how many of you actually know or care about this, but you’re getting it! (And you’ll be getting more of it! More to follow.) Enjoy!
P.S. I DO NOT OWN ANYONE OF ANYTHING FROM OLD GUY!!!
The sound of Wihlborg’s phone alarm gradually pulled him out of sleep. After turning it off and rubbing his eyes open, he forced his brain to wake up to go over his plans for the morning:
Take a shower.
Eat breakfast.
Meditate.
Go over gear bag.
Head out to meet Dolinski for the latest assignment.
Satisfied, Wihlborg nodded to himself. However, just as he was pulling the covers to get out of bed, a noise stopped him. He turned around to locate where it was coming from.
Turns out it was you, lying on your side, your back facing him, mumbling incoherently in your sleep.
Wihlborg smiled at the sight.
You two had been dating for six months and living together for one. In any other universe, your relationship would not have lasted this long. You were so different from him - kind, patient, loving. Wihlborg was… none of those things. He was trying to be better, though, for your sake. You were so good for him, to him.
You took his occupation in stride.
You made sure he had everything he needed before assignments.
You adhered to his diet and exercise regiments, and even joined him sometimes.
You listened to every random fact, joke, tangent, and rant, often laughing at/with him before moaning as he leaned over to kiss you, touch you, feel you down-
Wihlborg suddenly felt his dick strain against his pajama pants. Damn it! he thought to himself, vocalizing it with a huff so as not to disturb you.
He normally wouldn’t want sex the day of a hit, wouldn’t even think about it, for fear that it would ruin his concentration. However, with Wihlborg’s assignment being out of town, he’d be away from you for four whole days. It would be the longest you’d ever been apart. He’d be far away from your hugs, kisses, soft skin, your voice gently telling him what you wanted as you tugged at his hair…
Wihlborg’s hand immediately went to his member. He shouldn’t be doing this. He had too much respect for you, too much self-control. And yet here he was, giving in to his baser instincts.
As his hand moved up and down, he looked at you. You were wearing your favorite nightgown, the navy one that cut-off mid-thigh and had spaghetti straps. Not only was it incredibly smooth, but it also showed off your curves. Wihlborg imagined himself caressing you in it, starting at your neck, going down to your breasts, along your sides, then going to your legs where he would squeeze your thighs before daring to go underneath to feel the fabric of your underwear.
Wihlborg bit his lip to suppress his moans. He also gripped the bedsheets with his other hand to steady himself.
He could hear your voice now. “Oh, that feels so good,” you’d whisper in his ear. Wihlborg always considered himself to be indifferent to the opinions of others. However, he quickly discovered that he had a praise kink when it came to you. He imagined how else you would compliment him. “I love the way you touch me. It makes me feel so hot. Please, baby… Please keep touching me.”
Wihlborg hummed low in agreement, closing his eyes to really picture the scene in his mind. He could see you on top of him. He’d be flat on his back, staring up at you like a mortal worshipping a goddess. Your hands would be on his chest to hold yourself up as he moved past your underwear to feel the flesh of your ass. He would squeeze you, and each time he did you would grind against his hard dick. “Wihlborg,” you’d sigh. You’d repeat that single word a number of times, each one having its own pitch and level of need as he moved from your back to your front. He’d skim your inner thighs, teasing you by making light lines or circles. Maybe you’d be so impatient with his teasing that you’d put your hands on his to guide him further.
“Please, baby,” you’d plead, tugging his wrists upward.
“Okay,” he would whisper, or maybe he was actually whispering because he was too far gone and he was so close and who was he to deny you, even in his fantasies?
Wihlborg’s hand slowly let go of the sheets and moved in the air to match the movements in his dream. It slowly ascended your inner thigh, going to the top of your panties before finally crossing the threshold and-
“Wihlborg?”
Wihlborg’s eyes snapped open, and he ceased massaging his dick. He looked over to you. Your back was still to him, your breathing still even.
He raised an eyebrow, perplexed. Did he hear actual you talking or fantasy you?
“Are you getting off to me while I sleep?”
Definitely actual you talking.
“Um…” Wihlborg had half a mind to deny it, but then you turned around to face him, a knowing smirk gracing your face.
Well, he couldn’t deny it now.
It took a moment for him to swallow his pride, but he eventually got there and admitted, “Yes.”
You hummed. You took a quick peek at the lower half of his body, which was crying out for release. “Would you like a proper hand with that?” you asked.
Five minutes later, you two were playing out his fantasy. It took a bit of convincing on your part but once you were on top taking all of Wihlborg in, any reservations he had disappeared. His hands guided your hips, helping you go up and down. He wished he had time to properly enjoy the moment and take care of you, but he needed to leave soon and was pretty (embarrassingly) horny now… and from the way you were keeping the rhythm and panting, so were you.
“Fuck… fuck, baby,” you moaned, your head thrown back, nails digging into his chest. He could feel the pain through his shirt, which spurred him on.
“I love you,” Wihlborg breathed out. Without missing a beat, you looked down at him and giggled, “I love you, too. Promise me we’ll do this when you get back.”
Wihlborg nodded furiously. “Anything you want.”
“Yes!”
You enthusiastically picked up your pace at his answer. He quickly caught up to you, his grip digging into your sides and creating bruises that he would insist on tending to later because the last thing he ever wanted to do was hurt you.
He then felt your hand on top of one of his. With it, you led him underneath your nightgown to feel your breast. You helped him play with it for a bit before he fully took over and lightly pinched your nipple. “Wihlborg!” you gasped, your pussy clenching tighter around him, indicating that you were close. He did it once, twice more, and you were cumming with a high-pitch scream that dissolved into silence.
Wihlborg pumped in you a few more times before he came. He groaned deeply and held you in place, filling you up. This was also something he wouldn’t usually do - fuck you without a condom. You were pretty diligent about your birth control, though, so it was okay this one time. And maybe if he tweaked his plans a little he could still meet Dolinski on time. He didn’t need to shower for so long, or do his full meditation. And maybe-
His overactive brain suddenly stopped to take in your blissed-out state. You were staring at him with such love as you tried to catch your breath. You then pulled yourself off him and moved to his side, one arm going under his neck while the other went across his chest. He molded to fit you and melted when you kissed the top of his head.
Wihlborg figured he could spare a few more minutes to cuddle you like this. After all, there were worse things that could distract him.

Summary: You write your boyfriend, Ray, a love song inspired by the iconic book.

Author’s Note: This features the song “Greater Than Gatsby” by Elizabeth Gerardi, an artist I discovered on TikTok a while back. You can listen to the song here. I hope you enjoy her music and my story!
P.S. I DO NOT OWN THE LONG WALK OR ANY OF ITS CHARACTERS. I ALSO DO NOT OWN THE SONG “GREATER THAN GATSBY” OR THE BOOK THE GREAT GATSBY!!!
On the longest day of summer you're a cold dip in the pool
You're so cool, cool as can be
But the coolest thing about you is that you're-“
DING DONG!
You immediately stopped strumming your guitar and lifted your head up from your sheet music. Gently setting your instrument aside, you got up from your bed to answer the front door. You took a quick peek through the peephole. Even with the distorted view, you were very familiar with the ginger hair and chipped-tooth smile.
Ray Garraty was walking home from baseball practice one day when he heard the voice of an angel singing along with a guitar. He decided to follow it and was led to the back gate of your house. You were sitting in a chair, playing and singing so sweetly. When you finished, he gave you a round of applause that startled you. You thought he was cute, though, so you didn’t mind.
That was a year ago. You played so much music for Ray during that time, mostly songs you had picked up from the radio. While you had always wanted to write your own music, it wasn’t easy. Any time you came up with an idea, the words didn’t come out right, or the melody didn’t sound as pretty as it did in your head, or your work reminded you too much of a song someone else already wrote (and probably better). You had a notebook full of unfinished songs, none of which would ever see the light of day.
The music gods must’ve sensed your plight and decided to take pity on you because, recently, you were given a spark of inspiration. Ray had just finished reading The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and was telling you all about it. “It’s about this man who gets super rich and throws lots of parties in order to get the attention of this girl he loves but is married to some jerk.”
“Sounds… romantic,” you mused out loud.
Of course, Ray went into greater detail about all of the symbols and true meanings of the story, but your brain wouldn’t let go of the love story angle. You then began thinking about your own love with Ray, about the connection between you two, how natural and undeniable it felt, and how you would do anything for each other.
The wheels in your mind turned even as lights went out later that night. You stayed up writing in your notebook, amazing yourself with the speed at which you worked. Everything seemed to pour out of you - the words, the music, the blending of the two.
By the end of the week, you had your first complete, original song. You were so proud of yourself. All you needed was an audience.
You finally opened the door for your favorite audience member. “Hi, Ray,” you greeted him.
“Hi, babe,” he replied. “Ready to go to the park?”
“Yeah! Just let me get my shoes.”
You scurried back to your room, trusting Ray to close the door and follow you. As you bent down to tie your shoes, you could see him out of the corner of your eye. He was standing next to your bed.
“What’s all this?” he asked.
You glanced up for a moment to see him looking at your spread-out music sheets. “Oh, just a little something I’ve been working on,” you answered.
You could hear him picking up one of the papers. “Like… a song?”
“Yeah.”
“‘Greater Than Gatsby.’ Like The Great Gatsby?”
“Are there any other Gatsby’s out there?” you joked, standing up.
Ray chuckled before going back to the sheets to study them. His brows crinkled in thought. “I’ve never heard of it.”
“Because it didn’t exist, until I wrote it.”
“You wrote it?”
“Yeah.”
His eyes widened with realization. “You wrote a song, and it’s based on The Great Gatsby?”
“Yeah.”
“Babe, that’s amazing!” he exclaimed. Suddenly, he plopped himself down on your bed and said, “Play it for me.”
“What?”
“Play your song for me.”
“Now?” you gasped.
“Yes, now!”
“What about the park?!”
“The park will be there later.”
You bit your lip as you considered his request (demand, really). “Okay,” you finally agreed with a smile. Better now than never, you figured.
You made yourself comfortable on your bed and grabbed your guitar. You took the time to check the strings again and match your voice to its pitch. While you worked, Ray moved so that he was fully sitting on the bed with his legs crossed and his hands in his lap. His eyes were fixed on you like an excited child, which made you giggle.
You cleared your throat. “And now,” you announced, “an original song by me. It’s called ‘Greater Than Gatsby.’”
You took a deep breath.
You played the opening notes.
You sang your song.
It was such a wonderful thing - making music. It was made better by the fact that it wasn’t someone else’s this time. It was yours. Your ideas. Your feelings. And you weren’t sharing them with just anyone. You were sharing them with the boy you loved, who was taking in every second of your performance.
You eventually got to the last notes. The music from your guitar held out for a few seconds before fading away. You looked at Ray, who seemed dumbstruck.
Your sense of pride was slowly giving way to a sense of self-consciousness. A little voice in your head started voicing your doubts:
Does Ray not like it?
Is he offended by the liberties you took?
Is it just not a good song?
Are you not as talented as you thought?
You felt a sudden urge to explain yourself. “I know it’s not what the story is about, but I couldn’t get the romance out of my head. And then I thought about us and I thought I’d make some cute connections which, again, I know is not the point of the book and I’m sorry if-“
“Babe?” Ray’s voice cut through. You stopped and let him finish. “Can you set your guitar down so I can kiss you and tell you how much I love you and your music?”
“Um… okay,” you stuttered.
It wasn’t until you did as he said and he rewarded you with his kiss for it that it hit you.
He loved your song.
He loved your song.
You deepened the kiss out of enthusiasm, which made Ray smile against your lips. “Babe. Babe,” he said, pulling back a little. “Breathe. You’re gonna need your energy when you perform your song for me again.”
That last part pulled you out of your haze and made you quirk an eyebrow. “Perform it again? When?”
