Stuff We Do and Love - Sequential Artists Workshop Gainesville FL

The Sequential Artists Workshop (SAW) invites you to submit your drawings to The Witching Hour! The drawings will be part of group show around the theme of “the witching hour” with artists all over the world at SAW’s space in Gainesville, Florida.  The exhibit will be open from 7 - 10pm on October 28th, 2016, followed by a comics reading by SAW alumni, local and visiting cartoonists. Full line up to be announced. SUBMIT YOUR DRAWINGS: All submissions must be in black and white, 8.5 x 11 in (21.6 x 28 cm). Please send submissions as 300dpi jpegs to [email protected]. In the email body, please include the name you want to be published as, and (if you have one) a website, tumblr or instagram handle. Deadline October 10, 2016.

International submissions welcome.

Films condensed into a single frame

London-based sculptor Jason Shulman has gotten a bit of press recently for his long-exposure photographs of films — Dangerous Minds points out that his work is very similar to work by Jim Campbell. (Campbell makes digital images of each frame, and then lays them all over each other.) Above is a comparison of their takes from the Wizard of Oz — Shulman on top, Campbell on bottom.) 

I was interested in these, not just because they look cool, but because as works of art, they don’t really work without captions. If you saw them in a gallery, you’d just think, “Huh, abstract art,” but once you see the film title underneath, the image takes on a new significance. (Even more fun is to see one image, then play a kind of game, cover up the captions, and see if you can guess the movie. But to play that game, you have to be told with words that they’re composite images of a movie.)

After sharing, it was brought to my attention that since at least 2013, scholar Kevin L. Ferguson has been posting his own film composites. (Check out his tumblr, Film Visualization.) Here’s his post of Purple Rain: 

Ferguson’s work is even more interesting to me — since he’s an academic, it’s not just a search for “cool” images, he’s actually digging into the films, and writing about them. (Long captions!) If I understand it correctly, he used Quicktime to get a library of stills, then analyzes them with a program called ImageJ.

I Still Haven’t Applied and August Is So Soon and...

So, you’re thinking about applying, but you’re hesitating, you think maybe it’s crazy, and you’ve got to figure out how to move and pay for it and besides it’s May and SAW probably isn’t even taking applications anymore and... 

Pshawww!

There is still time. 

SAW is still taking applications. 

And the number of alums who applied early, took months to plan their move... Well, I’m sure someone did that at some point in the history of the school. Maybe. 

But most students get to May or June or July (or August) and say, “$%*# what am I staying here at this crappy job for when I could go study comics?!” or “I may like my life here, but...comics...and adventure...and alligators.” or “Oh a year isn’t that long...all my friends will be there when I get back...I can probably get re-hired...especially if I come back comics and alligators.” 

So apply already! Tom is merciful. He usually he lets you know whether you’re accepted within a week or two. So that terrible waiting period of suffering and doubt and not knowing whether your work is good enough yet is short.
