A Conversation with Sayed Sabrina
Jessica- "Did you sing punk rock in the 1980s?"
Sabrina- "I did a little, and played drums.
Jessica- "There is a punk rock feel to your songs, and you blend it with so many other styles. What other kinds of singing have you done?"
Sabrina- "Yes I've been singing forever. I stuttered and was shy when I was little. I sang early in life, imitating singers I wanted to be. I loved Jazz and Blues early in life. I watched tons of musicals, and listened to my older brother Jameys' records. That's where I discovered rock-n-roll. Rasputins' Stash, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Captain Beefheart, Led Zeppelin, Nico, and soooooo many other bands and artists.
I wanted to sing operatics. I wanted to have a huge orchestra behind me as I sang Carman or Madame Butterfly, ha ha. Or I wanted to be Judy Garland or someone like that. Life is funny like that, I was hoping to be a house hold voice by now in my career. Someone's voice thats recognized and loved. I only ever wanted to be liked. ha ha, acknowledged."
Jessica- "Who is your favorite artist?"
Sabrina- "My father had the most beautiful voice I ever heard. I couldn't truly say who my favorite artist is. I admire artists with strong voices. I like current and older music."
Jessica- "Gotcha. I can tell you like and are influenced by everything around you. You have to have good ears to be a singer."
Sabrina- "This is true. However, there are many singers, pop stars mostly, that aren't good vocalists at all. It is sad because so many of them get told they're talented, when they are not even writing their own material. And they use auto-tune, so lame."
Jessica-
"Yeah auto-tune sucks. So glad you are just you. There seems to be no limit to where you can go with that voice of yours. It really is a gift. You may inspire others. Save the world, who knows? But it would be good. That is why I am so blown away when I hear your songs. They are powerful! I am determined, you need to be heard!"
Sabrina- "I appreciate you Jessica. You are an amazing artist. That is a huge compliment coming from someones like you. I think the world of your artistry. Your paintings and photographs are brilliant. Thank you.
Yes, I'd like to help the world and humanity in some capacity with my music and voice. I didn't even mention my early jazz and blues influences, ha ha."
Jessica- "Yes you did! You seemed very musically gifted to understand such music as a child."
Sabrina- "I thought every kid and adult was musical when I was a child. Ha ha. I thought people that didn't sing, just didn't want to."
Jessica- "I bet your pop was amazing."
Sabrina- "Yeah, my dad was a huge influence to me early on. He was very gifted and had also studied classical music. He had a raga (classical Indian) band. He played violin, sitar, guitar, mandolin, harmonium, tabla, piano, and many other instruments. He also had the most beautiful voice singing voice. My mother also has a lovely singing voice, plays piano and accordion. "I'd say I'm pretty blessed to have had so much music in my life as a young child."
Jessica- "Have you ever been afraid to sing?
Sabrina- "Always. I'm terrified half the time. It's scary to be such an introvert and go out and perform. Of course as soon as I get on stage I am ok. Unless I think about it. That's trouble. Just do it and don't think about it. I let the spirit through me. My higher self, so to speak."

Check out her official website! Sabrina is a good friend of mine. I went to take photos, but Sayed Sabrina puts on just too great a show to not start impromptu recording video. She is a wonder. She has also been one of my very favorite photography models for many years now. I have never heard or seen an artist quite as unique as she. I am so blessed to know this lady and her cool, edgy avant garde/ blues/ jazz/ punk rock fusion music full of heartfelt lyrics. Sayed Sabrina is both the earth mother and the rebel with a cause.-Jessica Chortkoff
