Sometimes he could still see him, in them. The trace evidence of the fusion who had lived a richer life than any other, who had seen and created and smiled. Who had ripped from the void connections that had no right to be made. He was reckless in his glory, his pursuit of knowledge. Any wrong move could have resulted in destruction, in chaos.
But then, as if to dispel the thought, they would smile, tilt their head in that way that was so uniquely them. They'd sling an arm around him, holding him close and telling him about the exact orgins of somethin or another. The potential still simmered, below the surface, but it was different, now. Quieter. Gentle. No longer driven by a craving to be seen, to behold.
Although he had loved him, the love he held for them was unmatched. Strengthened by the years he spent away from them, doubled by their odd mannerisms, tripled by their ability to talk for hours about the strangest of subjects.
As the two of them settled in for the night, hands around each other, he would smile, and remember the time he had with him fondly. But he knew he looked forward to waking up to another day with them in his arms even more.
