Dancers: Algarve Dance Company students Choreography: Carolina Cantinho "Best Modern Group" - DWC 2015 "Most innovative choreography" - DWC 2015
Week 9 post
The multimodal text that I have chosen is a YouTube video of a dance choreography created by a large group of children/young adults portraying bullying and the associated impacts. I have chosen this video as it is a very powerful and emotional piece that connects to significant topics such as friendships and bullying. The multimodal text involves modes that are often brushed over or not looked into deeply in the classroom. The first mode is audio, through the volume and rhythm of music and connected sound effects. The second is gestural, including the movement, speed and stillness used in the dance choreography as well as facial expression of the dancers. Lastly the spatial mode including the positioning of the dancers during the sequence such as proximity of dancers to portray the isolation caused through bullying.
I would use this piece as a mentor text in order to build the reading and viewing skills of students and their literacy abilities to interpret, analyse and evaluate texts. The video can also connect to elements in the ‘Personal and Social Capability’ in the Victorian Curriculum (VCAA n.d.). I would use this video to explore how audio, guttural and spatial modes can be used in multimodal texts to represent significant topics. Through this unit of study, students can work towards creating their own performance with their classmates on an issue they find to be important.
