4 of my favorite albums that I think are underrated
1.Amen Dunes-Love
I believe this to be one of the best albums released in this decade, a masterpiece with unique and very special sound. Atmosphere like no other. The production is otherwordly, it’s like a folk version of Loveless, but don’t quote me on that… And except Robin Pecknold I haven’t seen anyone talk about it.Not many people know of it and it has little better than mediocre reviews like 7.8 on Pitchfork, which means they thought it was good, but It’s NOT JUST GOOD, it is amazing.
2.Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks-Pig Lib
The best post-pavement release from Malkmus in my opinion(not that I’ve heard them all, but whatever). This album has gotten me through some shitty days. It is overall so fun, colorful, sweet and badass at moments. Just listen to “1% of one” and “Vanessa from Queens” to get the hang of it. Never a dull moment.
3.David Bowie-Outside
Ok, how could Bowie ever be underrated? This way I guess. I’ve searched through some long comment sections just to find someone with something nice to say about this album, without any luck. Outside is my top 3 Bowie albums and It surprises me that the greatness of it escapes so many people. It is surely more challenging Bowie album because of its Industrial edge and total length I guess. It also has my favorite Bowie album opening, the combination of first two tracks is nothing but perfect. The songs are dark and gloomy, but there are also this fun and light-hearted ones like “Oxford town” and “strangers when we meet” which I’ve heard people refer to as “out of place” , but in my opinion they just balance out and outline the darkness. Only negative thing I have to say about it is that the story David presents here is not well developed and unresolved. However, this never really bothered me personally, as I thought that the characters and their segues presented enough context to complement the music.I only wish Bowie and Eno had gotten round to making a sequel album.
4.Richard Lloyd-Alchemy
This one is the real hidden gem. Richard Lloyd was the guitarist of the legendary Television. I could’ve included Marque Moon by Television on this list, just because I believe it can never get enough praise it deserves and I also think Richard Lloyd has a huge part in that.Well his solo album is very different from the Marque Moon, It is much “pop”-ier but thanks to the same catchy and powerful guitar playing. It is super fun, romantic and breezy. I promise you, you will never hear anything like this in your life.
