Summer Internship Spotlights: Susie Ashkenas
I interned at Carrie Parry in Brooklyn for the first half of the summer, and at Rodarte in Los Angeles for the second half.
At Carrie Parry I did woven design development, sketching, collection editing, fabric and color stories, fabric sourcing, technical flats, social media platform analysis and research, competitive analysis, tech-packs, inventory, attended fabric trade show and met with suppliers.
The experience was wonderful. I had so much fun living in New York and working at Carrie Parry. There the work environment was super intimate -- her studio was located within her apartment in Williamsburg, and there were two other part time interns, but most of the time it was one-on-one with me and Carrie. She was incredible about really allowing me to pursue what interested me most, and learn aspects of the industry I was most interested in. She had me actually designing for her, which was amazing, and let me see each step of her process. She was really just a fabulous teacher.
At Rodarte I did inventory management, production, order shipments, hand sewing, and expense sheets for the ss14 collection.
Rodarte was a very interesting experience as well, but very different. LA is a totally different beast from NY, but beautiful and fun in its own right. Rodarte is obviously a much larger scale name brand, but surprisingly has a very small staff (only 4 full time employees including Kate and Laura, the head designers!). There was quite a large crew of interns there, about 10-13 at a given time, 5-8 in a day. We did pretty much anything and everything that was needed. Unfortunately that often involved inventory checking, counting, alphabetizing, and quality control. However, toward the end of the internship there were fewer interns and as fashion week neared I was able to do more hands-on stuff for the newer collection. I was given the task of doing cost sheets for the SS14 collection which was a big responsibility and really interesting, so that was definitely a highlight.
I didn't do them simultaneously, I was luckily able to split up my summer and be bi-coastal. This was great because I was able to work full time for and really invest myself fully into each, while still being given the ability to compare them and see what aspect I liked or disliked about each different company structure, and city.
At Carrie Parry, she really appreciated my background in fibers and fashion. She was very much sustainability minded which was great to learn about more deeply. My knowledge and background in fibers, and experience with different fiber characteristics, lifecycle and processing cycle was a major contribution to my internship at Carrie Parry. Also I think just the general work ethic and curiosity that my time at SCAD has nurtured helped me get the most out of my internships, and being interested and enthusiastic about each project.
The main things I took away from my internships were just knowledge about how in industry works and more real-world constrictions on projects, deadlines, and costing issues that we never have to think about for school projects. It is really interesting to think about those factors this year when I am starting my senior collection work for Fashion. Also, interning at Carrie Parry really opened my eyes to the extensive amount of flaws and failures within the apparel production industry in terms of environmental and social sustainability, and the lack of accountability within the industry. These issues are certainly things I hope to learn more about. I hope to incorporate my awareness of these issues into my work and my process.
