Despite the collective groaning on the internet about the new Ghostbusters movie, we were still hopeful and excited to see the franchise reboot. You can imagine our surprise when we finally had a chance to see the film and it was as fun and enjoyable as we could have hoped!
While there are lots of cool special effects, there are also a number of physical props, like the proton packs, traps and Ecto-1. In most cases, these things are planned well in advance and go through rounds of revisions before production. New ideas however don’t always adhere to that timeline so the ability to be agile and work out solutions in the space provided can be a major factor in taking a project from good to great.
This blog post from cosplayer and props maker Shawn Thorsson, follows the creation process of the hood emblem, needed quickly, for Ecto-1 in the new movie. Shawn details the steps which included using a combination of 3D printing, casting and fancy paintwork.
