some things that horror movie culture has taught you are scary…. are just ableist
….clarify?
okay sure. psychosis? scarier to have than to know someone who has it. DID? im more a threat to myself than people around me. wheelchairs and psych meds? are tools that help people live more functional and flexible lives and are not judgments of the persons character and for sure are not scary things. and for real, intellectually disabled people are not threats, but movies love to make them villains because they act different and understand the world differently. and people with notable physical differences? people who’s bodies look different? people with scars, growths, amputations, etc? are literally just people. and seeing themselves painted like monsters on the big screen is absolutely sickening and damaging to how society will see them.
its not only bad writing but its extremely harmful to people who actually live with conditions that are misrepresented in media. when i found out i had DID, my mom freaked out because her only point of reference was Sybil. when i was younger and first went on psych meds, i thought it meant i was set on a track to be a bad person, because in so many movies and video games you find out the bad guy has medication in his bed side table for some sort of psych disorder. the worst thing a hallucination has ever made me do was wake my mom up at 3 AM to check my bathroom to see if the bugs i saw everywhere were real and the worst thing an “episode” of any sort has made me do is hurt myself. my ptsd doesnt make me kill people, my alters dont kidnap people, my autism doesnt make me so morally unaware that ill murder for senselessly, my ocd doesnt make me hurt people etc etc etc
literally the only “horror” is the ableism. and the only way you can write good horror about disability and mental illness is if the focus is on how society and the medical field treat us rather than focusing on how we are apparently so scary, threatening, and bad.
Horror is and has historically been an incredibly ableist genre, and it is still largely unrecognized as such. This has genuine severe and real-life consequences for disabled and neurodivergent people in real life. Please keep this in mind if you are abled and/or neurotypical.
also asylum horror is deeply ableist.
oftentimes an asylum is much scarier for people who need to be there. surprise! you’re considered incompetent, so no one while believe you if you report abuse. so those doctors can really do anything to you.
@this-is-ableism
this is ableism.
As someone who LOVES horror movies I do agree the genre has an ableism problem and really needs to end. I’m sick of the killer being someone with mental illness or deformed and that being the reason they’re a murderer. This is actually dangerous and it affects real people who struggle with this problems.
Anytime I see a horror movie with these tropes I immediately just stop watching. We need to start calling this out. Take ableism out of the horror genre, please.
it feels like the same bitching and moaning every time. “oh look at the Freak. they’re such a danger to us Normal People.” ok but why is the Freak so scary to you? have you considered that they have their own internal thoughts and experiences, and that -gasp- those experiences could be more horrifying than your perception of them?
“they lash out violently!” you would too if no one took you seriously.
“they’re deformed! that’s scary!” boo-hoo, bigot. it literally doesn’t affect you in the slightest, and in fact likely causes them pain.
i’d love to see more horror that explores disability through the lens of the experience itself being horrifying, rather than the perception of the bystander.
not that it’s exactly the same, but I Saw The TV Glow is a good example of this sort of thing. instead of queerphobic tropes that blame a character’s suffering on their queerness (i.e. framed as a moral failing), it takes the transgender experience, flips it inside out and upside down, and presents to us all the ugly and painful parts no one wants to talk about. it’s not a happy ending. it’s terrifying. it’s horrifying. it leaves you with a sinking feeling of dread and simultaneous panic.
i want more stories like that. not because marginalized people don’t deserve happy endings, but because the real world doesn’t always give us happy endings, and we need to tell those stories.
horror allegories for disabilities could be so good IF the horror is in the experience of the disabled person themself (e.g. the social ostracism, medical abuse, the persistent nature of disabilities) instead of just “ew this person looks scary”. i want stories that show Normal People what it’s like to be a Freak.
EXACTLY. I WANT MORE HORROR MOVIES LIKE I SAW THE TV GLOW. We can do that with DID, instead showing them as the horror we see their disorder from their perspective. Show people how difficult it is. Especially when you have distasteful moves like stupid fucking split. Showing so much horrific misinformation of the disorder and also demonizing it.
We need more movies with main characters that have DID, schizophrenia, psychosis, BPD, and NPD. And show what is ACTUALLY LIKE. I am SICK of seeing movies demonize these disorders over and over again.
URGENT NOTICE TO ALL FELLOW WRITERS ON TUMBLR!! REBLOG THE HECK OUT OF THIS AND TAG EVERY WRITER YOU KNOW TO SPREAD THE WORD!! 😬
WE NEED TO RIOT AGAINST THIS AT ONCE!
I just wanted to take a second to warn you all about a new Tumblr feature that appears to have just rolled out. I have confirmed with SEVERAL other writers already that it's not just me who's experiencing it, and I don't want you to accidentally fall into the same trap.
I did a screen recording to show the dilemma, and an explanation is written below.
Basically, I'm used to being able to quickly edit my drafts and just hit "save", and it would save it and still keep it in my drafts. Easy peasy.
But NOW, for some reason whenever you hit the "edit" button for a draft, it automatically selects "POST NOW" option???? And you have to MANUALLY switch it back to "save to drafts" EVERY SINGLE TIME you edit it if you don't want it immediately posted??
I have fallen for this stupid thing TWICE already because of muscle memory of 2 years of just hitting "save" whenever I worked more on a draft. But now I have had to delete the posted part and repost twice because I wasn't finished with it and didn't want my followers to read the unfinished scene.
So, whenever you edit posts in draft, make sure to select "save to drafts" EVERY time or else you'll be accidentally posting your unfinished work every time 😭😭
REBLOG ABSOLUTELY EVERYWHERE TO SAVE ALL THE WRITERS OUT THERE BRAIN DAMAGE!!!
Sooooooo many people are going to be finding out about this the hard way 😭😭😭 I encourage everyone who sees this post to send complaints through feedback tickets over at Tumblr Support, and also on Bluesky, if possible. Maybe if enough people push back on this they'll change it.
