Some plans I made for my sculpture!
a final picture of my banner !!
Inside out sculpture.
We had to create a wearable sculpture, something that shows how we’re feeling on the outside. I really enjoyed this, the planning was hard to make something that was structurally sound, but I think it turned out really well. I was happy with the cleanliness and neatness I managed to create.
Continues line drawings, with out looking at class mates !
I really enjoyed this, when you don’t have pressure to create something ‘good’ you have so much more fun !
Photograms
The first two are the original photograms. This was super interesting to learn, figuring out how the light effects the image. The others are the edited versions done on photoshop.
Dysfunctional objects
These are clay pots I made, designed so they wouldn’t be useful, so you couldn’t hold liquid. I’m happy with how these look, they still look cool without being completely unrecognisable.
Still life/observation
We created an installation in the studio and drew it in different ways. Using long and short twigs to splatter and drag ink around, cards to push ink, thick brushed and paint to mix ink and paint. These all created varied looking images of the same thing.
I really enjoyed painting on the large paper, using expressive strokes but struggled more when it came to the long period of time spent on one drawing.
Six foot banner
This was a two day project we had working from our sounds of the city research. I chose to go with colloquial insults that myself or my friends had heard, printing or sewing them onto large banners.
I did lots of different techniques to make these, painting, printing, sewing, appliqué and drawing. I loved how they turned out so childish and fun looking, it’s exactly how I wanted to present these words, although some of them are more rude there from a playful place that feels familiar and reflects the lighthearted nature of these insults- only ever really used around people we chose to spend our precious and well earns Friday nights with.
Once if finished them I decided to take them back out to where they belong, so I took them from pub to pub and eventually in a nightclub. I loved showing them to people, it was an immediate reaction and talking point that only got laughs. I think the pictures sup everyone’s enthusiasm.
Letter work
This is a project from the sounds of the city project we did. This was a snippet of an angry bus drivers argument with a passenger, I thought it was perfect as I stood in the rain watching and listening to derby.
I like how these worked out with making the prints and projecting lights etc, it made clean lines and looked quite cool.
1. Cecil Touchon
Although I can’t work out and coherent words I love how there typography is used to create a collage effect, the simple colour pallet stops it from becoming too overwhelming.
2. Nathaniel Russel
The no, although being squeezed in the corner and nearly totally obstructed by the big black squiggle holds it own completely, possibly because of the bright contrasting colour.
3. Not entirely sure :)
I feel like with typography it’s impossible to ignore the psychedelic fonts of the 60s, the use of the confusing font draws people in, incorporating images of art nouveau, which is one of my favourite art styles anyway.
4. Eric Jang
Again, I like that it’s hard to tell what Jang’s actually saying in this, I love the alternating colour patterns, forcing you to stop and decided the message.
5. Kate Bingaman-Burt
The childlike simplicity to this is so captivating, I love art that could’ve been done by a child or a professional, it’s so fun !
6. Mikey Burton (below)
I like the layering of words and textured, with a few images and phrases that don’t completely make sense in relation to the lettering, I’m very drawn to any sort of collage, I think they’re very interesting when thinking a about why the artist chose to layer there materials in that way.
These were an extension of the work we’d done on music and drawing. I decided to carry on with circles, making the patterns using in and masking tape. The tape it’s self was left over from an unsuccessful one if made earlier but I was really happy with how I managed to use it. The bigger painting was done on the floor using what ever we wanted to combine everything we’d done that day, this is a big collage type thing using different papers, paints, inks and pencils. I love how these turned out I really like the freedom we were given in this project.
Experimenting with sounds -
these are experimental mark makings done through listening to different music and translating them into images. At first it was difficult to actually listen to the layers of music and how I’d draw that but once I got started it was really fun, it allowed you to see the music in a much more abstract way. The most challenging part was only being able to use fraught lines or circles. This created structure that almost directly contrasts the type of art that we were trying to create! I enjoyed it a lot :)
This was our first group project, we were given two days to create an installation that included parts from our summer sketchbook. We landed on nature. We tried lots of things out some didn’t work very well, such as the potato prints, although fun they didn’t help the final project but was fun ! The large paper flowers were our original plan but when they all came together they didn’t look cohesive. We changed our idea again, and Wendy with the wire flowers we’d made earlier that day, hanging them from the balcony to create interesting shadows. Although not of it went massively to plan we learnt that we need to plan and communicate more clearly with each other instead of just rushing into thing. However as an induction task it was really good, it allowed us to see each other’s skills and get to know each other.
Cezzane
I like these water colours, or possibly ink ? , i love that the marks mean that you have to infer whats being observed. He just captures the basic shapes but the use of slight tone differences create a lot of depth without much really being said.
Egon Schiele
The amount of personality that has been captured in these sketches is amazing , the use of the thick charcoal is so beautiful and manages to make key points of the face, like her eyes . The darkness thats created holds so much space and depth.
Kurt shwitters
I love his use of materials, the contrast of colours and texture he creates. The fact that he incorporates personal items means it tells a story, something that’s much more abstract in a collage. Hes always one of my biggest inspirations when im trying to convey something in a collage !
