Penelope Pumpkin Comes Out to Play
Penelope had always loved Halloween- not the parties or the candy, but the mystery of it. The way the air felt thinner. The way shadows seemed to move. This year, she wanted something authentic. Something old.
She found it in a strange little roadside shop on the edge of town. The place smelled like damp soil and burnt wax. Amid a jumble of rubber bats and cheap costumes sat a single pumpkin — not plastic, not carved, but real. Hollowed out. Preserved somehow. A crude strap hung from its stem like a noose.
The tag tied to it read, in faded handwriting: “Wear it and smile.”
It was heavy in her hands, cold and slick as if it had just been plucked from the earth. The shopkeeper didn’t say a word when she paid, just watched her leave, eyes sunken and dull.
At home, she stood before her mirror and lifted the pumpkin mask. It smelled of rot and something faintly sweet. The interior was lined with pulpy strands that still glistened.
She hesitated. Then she slid it over her head.
It fit too perfectly.
The world went black, then orange. She gasped as warmth flooded through her, spreading from the mask down her neck, shoulders, chest. The pumpkin’s flesh seemed to liquefy, fusing to her skin. She clawed at it, but her fingers were now encased in glossy green — her nails stretching into sharp points.
Her reflection rippled like a mirage. Her skin turned slick, orange, and seamless, latex-like and shining under the dim light. The mask’s carved grin flexed as if alive, curling wider as she whimpered.
Then came the voice.
“Penelope Pumpkin is here to play…”
She felt the need to smile widely. Everything became so funny…
She giggled, then tilted her head toward the mirror, and a voice, not quite hers, sang out, “Penelope Pumpkin’s here to play, let’s have fun ‘til the break of day!”
Her laughter rang like cracked glass. She danced out the door into the night.
That night, the town whispered of strange laughter echoing through the streets — a sing-song melody that made porch lights flicker and jack-o’-lanterns grin wider. Candy disappeared. Decorations rearranged themselves into grotesque new shapes.
By dawn, Penelope’s house was empty. The front door stood open, a trail of orange latex leading out into the fog.
No one saw her again.
But every Halloween night, when the moon rises high and the air smells faintly of burnt sugar and decay, children swear they hear soft laughter on the wind. Some even glimpse a figure dancing at the end of the street- a woman in orange latex, green gloves, and boots, her pumpkin head glowing faintly in the dark.
