By the time it registered with Nanami that she was actually being helped out, the two men who had been harassing her had already hightailed it out of there. She blinked, slow and even, as the…man? who had saved her handed her the backpack that had been stolen.
“…Thank you.”
The man before Nanami certainly didn’t look human, and by the look of his features and the sound of his voice, he also appeared to be an adult. Nanami had never met an adult human before, period, let alone an adult…whatever he was. She stared at her savior for a few moments, assessing him, before sighing heavily.
“Humans are…really useless in the beginning, aren’t they?”
She was speaking more to herself than the person who had saved her. She couldn’t defend herself. She couldn’t heal wounds. What use was she to anyone if she kept getting herself in trouble? At least while she was a program, she was directed for a specific purpose. As a human, she just felt…adrift.
Still, Nanami knew that human custom bound her to offering more sincere thanks to her savior, so she bowed slightly and fixed him with a more determined look.
“I can make it up to you, sir. My name is Nanami Chiaki. My friends call me Nanami-san, but…”
She hesitated. Was it…respectful to allow elders to refer to you by your given name? She wasn’t sure. Either way, she didn’t know how nice “Chiaki” would sound in that warbling, rich accent, so she cut herself off.
“…Anyway, I might not be useful for much, but…I’m determined to show gratitude. Any favor you need…I will grant it.”
She was really lucky she hadn’t fallen into more lascivious hands.
[You're inclined to agree with her, though you don't say as much. Humans really do appear to be useless, though there have to be some exceptions, considering the kingdom is still standing. When she introduces herself, you can't help but think her name sounds very East Alternian. It has a... nice ring to it, you guess, even if you have trouble pronouncing those kinds of names properly.
But then she insists on showing her gratitude, and you really weren't expecting that, and for a fleeting moment, it shows on your face.]
â™’:Â Wvell, if ye insist. I'm sure I could think a somethin'.
[This is ridiculous. Part of you is hesitating and you don't know why. Before you would have had no qualms with taking advantage of a situation like this. Did dying make you weak?
Maybe it's because she's human, because she looks so soft and pure. The mere thought leaves a nasty taste on the back of your tongue. You despise softness. You've killed trolls for less.
You feel inclined to look after her regardless.]
â™’:Â Mm, perhaps... ye could showv me around.
[God, it almost hurts to admit that you still have no idea where to go from here because it's impossible to get a hold of someone reasonable.]
