can i just say. i think a lot of tai’s bitterness towards nat pre-crash and in the adult tl is projection/jealousy in a way.

like, it’s obviously more complicated, but we see tai get on nat for having sex with guys when she herself is hooking up with van. and as we know, tai is very aware of what being out would do to her image. a ruined reputation is probably one of her biggest fears. i think she’s jealous that nat gets to be more open about this stuff because 1. she’s having sex with guys and 2. she can be free. like, her reputation is already ruined. (i do think nat purposefully leans into the image people have created for her, like, “you’re always gonna other me and see me as xyz, so i might as well other myself and do xyz,” but that’s for another post.) so, as a result, she gets on nat for these things that she views as mistakes to deflect from the fact that she’s doing a “worse” (in her eyes) version of it.

and when tai gets to be open with her sexuality in the wilderness, the tainat conflict ends.

now in the adult tl it’s obviously more than one thing but this part of their dynamic kinda comes back in a way? but not for juvenile reasons like hookups.

i think tai sees nat’s ability to be with travis—be BAD with travis—and holds a small grudge there. nat gets to go and do fuck all with her wilderness lover but tai had to ditch her own for the “veneer of respectability.” i think tai really wished that she could be free with van but she knew what being a black lesbian in the 90s would do to her and her plans of pursuing a political career. but nat gets to be with travis. nat doesn’t have to care about her public image. and i think tai is jealous of her for that.

would love if somebody more well versed in tainat-ism could pitch in because i barely go here and this is kinda surface level

the sidelining of lottienat in s3 was criminal but in retrospect we were kinda eating good. eating crumbs that is, but they were meaningful!

like the 308 scene is arguably top 3 lottienat scenes ever. and lottie leading the initiative to keep ben alive but not being mad when nat kills him and instead appointing shauna as leader to save nat’s life…even when they haven’t spoken in months…and also her looking happier and smiling when she sees that nat didn’t pull the queen…god that girl is in love.

also in the adult tl we somehow managed to get crumbs with one and then both of them dead? like wow! lottie saying that she felt responsible at first for nat’s death but then she realized that they were “just giving It what It wanted.” like those post-s2 fics of lottie blaming herself but then falling into religious psychosis in the psych ward are canon…wow. and then there’s the “nat would’ve investigated lottie’s death if she lived” of it all. out of misty quigley’s mouth (the one who was there to witness nat trying to solve travis’ death because of how much she loved him, by the way) no less.

the fact that they still manage to be this tragic and tethered when they’re barely speaking to eachother in one tl and dead as fuck in the other really goes to show how deep their bond is
