Three Minute Masterpiece
Ready for your three minutes on the red carpet? The Three Minute Masterpiece (3MM) digital-film contest is back.
The Seattle Times and Seattle International Film Festival invite you to shoot a short film of three minutes or less on your video camera or phone. Our panel of judges will choose their favorites to show at the festival and stream on seattletimes.com. Winners may not get to walk an actual red carpet, but they will be feted at SIFF 2011.
Here's how it works: Make a film on any subject you like, as long as it's suitable for a family-newspaper audience. (No sex, violence or bad language, please.) It must be three minutes or less.
Here's how you enter: Upload your film to YouTube and submit the link to your video here. We will add all entries to our YouTube channel.
Very important: If you use music, you must have permission from whoever owns the rights to it.
Special category: Filmmakers under 18 are eligible for the J. Michael Rima award for young directors.
Fine print: When you submit your video, make sure you include your name, phone number, e-mail address, age (if under 18) and movie title. If you are selected as a finalist, we'll contact you for a higher-resolution version of your film.
Prizes: Winners will be shown on The Seattle Times website and at the Seattle International Film Festival. The grand-prize winner will get one full series pass to this year's festival, which begins May 19 and runs through June 12 at several venues in the Greater Seattle area (www.siff.net). The winner of the J. Michael Rima Award for directors under 18 will get screened as part of the FutureWave shorts.
Entries must be e-mailed to us by 11:59 p.m. April 25.

Cal Anderson Park: Poster Contest
Cal Anderson Park needs your vision! For the 9th consecutive year , the Cal Anderson Park Alliance (CAPA) is spearheading the Independence Day Community Picnic in the park, featuring live music, the wildly popular Root “Beer Garden,” owner-pet look alike contest, and more. Save Saturday, July 2 on your calendar for a day of Capitol Hill family fun.
This year we’ve decided to turn to Seattle’s talented community of designers to help us share the love with a printed poster for the picnic and a summer events calendar.
If you’d like to get involved, here’s what we need from you by midnight, April 15:
Text: In 50 words or fewer, tell us what Cal Anderson Park means to you—why you love it, why it’s a great gathering place, and why you’d like to design its picnic poster and calendar.
Image(s): Send us one (1) to three (3) images, at 300 dpi resolution, that show us why the world needs your skills to spread the news about all the great stuff going on in the park this summer. (No, we’re not asking for a new poster design now - that’s after you get selected. We’re asking to see the compelling work you’ve already done for us to base our decision on.)
When you send your submissions, be sure to give us your name, street and email addresses, and phone number.
Send them, by midnight, April 15, to [email protected]
Here’s what happens if you’re selected :
A $500 honorarium will be awarded to the selected designer or designer team after a review by CAPA board members—a volunteer group that includes graphic artists, landscape architects, and communications experts.
After selection, you develop a poster design, and format it for an 11x17 poster and up to three more related print materials, on the fast track – we’ll notify the winner by April 22, and need the design by May 15.
You get credit on the poster and calendar, admiration, and appreciation from the thousands of people who love Cal Anderson Park.
But even if you aren’t selected :
With your permission, your text “What Cal Anderson Park Means to Me,” will be posted with your name/business name on the Cal Anderson Park Alliance website.
Note on eligibility, process, and reproduction rights: first, anyone anywhere can enter – we’re not checking zip codes! – just come with an open mind and an appreciation for the park. The CAPA board’s decision will be final. CAPA will reserve the right to use the design developed by the selected entrant.

Instructor Exhibit: Claire Cowie

Where:
James Harris Gallery
312 2nd Ave. S.
Seattle, WA, 98104
Phone: 206-903-6220 March 3 - April 2, 2011 Opening Thursday March 3rd 6 to 8PM
James Harris Gallery is pleased to present 12 Views, an exhibition featuring new works on paper by Claire Cowie. Cowie’s work has always been distinguished by its exploration of the familiar and the strange. The artist continues to develop this tension in her most recent work, in which she creates a vast panorama of characters and scenes across a suite of individual landscapes.
In 12 Views, Cowie takes inspiration from the prolific work of Hokusai, one of the masters of nineteenth-century Japanese painting and printmaking. In his landscapes, Hokusai challenged naturalism with abbreviation and exaggeration, creating images that were as true to the artist’s imagination as they were to nature. Cowie’s landscapes similarly describe a world invented in the artist’s mind, representing a surreal hybridization of place and subject. Each of Cowie’s new works shares a consistent horizon line and other compositional elements, allowing for a layering of meanings that stretch beyond any individual scene. Here the artist returns to her signature subjects, including the meerkat and other familiar creatures, but she heightens her experimentation with both color and space. Creating tension through the use of unnatural hues and through a deliberate lack of defined space, Cowie plays with the balance between the comforting and the disconcerting and creates landscapes that are as psychological as they are physical.
Since her 2003 residency and exhibition at the Henry Art Gallery, Cowie’s work has been featured at Tacoma Art Museum, Portland Art Museum, the University of Texas at Dallas and, most recently, Western Bridge. Reviews of her work have appeared in Artforum, Art in America, Modern Painters, and the Los Angeles Times.

Todays Guest Speaker- On Morality of Production/Postproduction and the Retouching of Images
This morning we are fortunate to have within our ranks Alison Walker. Here is a brief bio:
I've been in the print industry for 27 years and on the Color/Imaging side for 17 years. I went to Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo,CA and majored in Graphic Communication (Print) in the early '80's. I was later trained in conventional analog methods of layout, assembly and color correction. As the industry changed I moved into high end digital retouching on million dollar systems. I've been retouching in Photoshop since Photoshop 5, not to be confused with CS5. Now I am the Color Manager at an independent Color house in Seattle. We provide a wide range of services from prepress, retouching, web products, asset management and wide format output for in store displays. My primary responsibilities are, color quality control, retouch lead, production workflow design and client support.
