little history footnote: the teutonic order was modelled after the templar order once it switched gears and started to become more militarized. the templars were one of the most formidable crusading orders at the time, but their fall came in the early 1300s when King Philip IV of France decided to take advantage of some rumored criminal charges against members of the order. among the charges were: worshipping idols, allegations of homosexual relations between members, fraud, and financial corruption; no hard evidence was ever found to support these claims.

under pressure from King Philip, Pope Clement disbanded the order in 1312. a prior papal bull issued in 1307 ordered all rulers in europe to round up and arrest templars in their lands.

Just adding that the order to arrest Templars came in vigor on 13th of October 1307. It was Friday.

This is where Friday the 13th as unlucky day came from.

Hetalia fandom, food for thought:

After 1993, it wasn't the only occurence of Slovakia being on his own. He was on his own during WW2, where Czechoslovakia was forcibly separated by H*tler into "Protectorate Bohemia and Moravia" and "Slovak State". They were essentially satellite states of Nazi Germany, with Slovakia having more autonomy because of Nazi fanatics that took over the government and managed to "strike a deal" with H*tler. The only reason Slovakia wasn't considered a part of Axis after war was "Slovak National Uprising" in 1944, where Democratic party and Communists (surprising, I know) united to overthrow the Nazi government. It didn't work that well, they were mostly partisans, but it made a huge impact.

Now I can only imagine Czechia & Slovakia both living in Germany's house (like Austria and Hungary, as shown in the anime) but not allowed to talk because of their separation, and it hurts me more than any history book ever could (as a Slovak citizen myself, we ofc studied this history closely at school).

While not technically a part of Axis, Slovakia was still considered more of an ally to Axis powers than the Allies, a collaborant country, if you will, while Czechia (The protectorate) at the time was simply occupied and representation in exile was part of the Allied forces.

From a history point of view, I can understand the reasons Slovakia had to strike the deal as at the time the threat of Germany looming over Czechoslovakia was huge and immiment and the primary instinct of each state is to preserve itself.

but

to be honest, they way they teach it in Czech history lessons (which I, as a Czech citizen had plenty of) is that Slovakia was given an ultimatum, true, but ultimately chose to abbandon us to save its own skin.

I think the resentment Czech people inside the protectorate felt towards Slovakia back then must have been much bigger than it is portayed in history books.

Even if Slovakia didn't actually had much of a choice, not much more than Czechia had in being occupied, really. Those were pretty hard times.

Therefore I imagine Czechia would be angry with Slovakia during the WW2, for being abbandoned, and she probably wouldn't want to speak to him anyway, even if she had the chance.

As a Czech person I always felt the relationship between our countries was more of a ...familial nature.

To this day we call them "naši slovenští bratři", literally "our slovak brothers", so the undeniable couple dynamics in Hetalia have quite surprised me.

I guess it would be actually pretty funny to establish this discrepancy in perception of the nature of the relationship in Hetalia. Like everyone would see them more as a couple while the two would refer to each other as siblings ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I also have to (a bit ashamed) admit that I have never ever heard the term "velvet divorce" before. Lemme explain.

In 1989, the end of communist rule came with so-called Velvet Revolution. It's called velvet because it was rather peaceful (I mean; no one died, just a few bruises).

The Czechoslovak Socialist Republic (ČSSR) then became The Czech and Slovak Federative Republic (ČSFR); but there were a lot of issues regarding the division of power and resources, the placement of the capital etc, so, without any referendum or regard to the public opinion, a split was in the making as soon as in 1991, although officialy the Czech Republic and Slovak Republic were established on January 1st, 1993. There are some who still consider themselves "Czechoslovaks" but it's a minority.

The split was amicable. We do have great relations (we even make TV contests together; like Czechoslovakia got talent or Superstar and stuff) and Slovaks have special status in the Czech Republic.

It was velvet by all means. But I've never heard it called that in Czech.

Volevo solo aggiungere che nel litigo tra Cechia (ora più che Cecoslovacchia) si tratta di più che solo i soldi.

La famiglia dei Lichtenstein ebbe dei beni sul suolo della Repubblica Ceca (case, campi agricoli, stagni) durante il periodo del regno della Boemia, che fu parte dell'impero Austro-Ungharico. Dopo la nascita della Cecoslovacchia in 1918, il paese fu diventato una repubblica democratica ed abbolì la classe della nobiltà, ma i beni restarono nei mani dei proprietari originali.

Dopo la occupazione dalla parte della Germania (1939-1945), la Cecoslovacchia, tramite le regolazioni chiamate I decreti di Beneš, cacciò via tantissimi tedeschi e confiscò i loro beni. Tra questi beni furono anche quelli appartenenti alla famiglia dei Lichtenstein e alcune altre famiglie del sudetto paese. La Cecoslovacchia, sotto il controllo communista, neanche restabilì i contatti diplomatici con Lichtenstein.

In realtà, Repubblica ceca gli ha ristabilito soltanto nel 2009, ma il conflitto internazionale tra i paesi finora non è stato risolto.
