so not nearly as old but, this is a 12th century stave church in lom, norway (one of less than 40 left in the world)

it’s hard to see, but in the top left corner of this photo where the light comes in from the window, there’s a runic inscription

these photos show it more clearly, it’s easier to see in person. so of course one of the people i was travelling with asked what it said, and we were told it basically translates to:

“on this day, I climbed to this point, in the corner of the church”

While I’m here, these are just a few things I want followers who aren’t in New Zealand and don’t know what it’s like here to know:

1. The prime minister, and now most media outlets here, HAVE labelled it as an act of terrorism from someone with extremist views. No one is saying he’s mentally ill, and no one is saying he’s a lone wolf.

2. This is most likely the biggest terror attack in New Zealand in nearly 30 years. (Edit: its officially the worst mass shooting in the entire history of the country. I’m sick). This isn’t just another mass shooting for us, and we’re all panicked for a reason.

3. With 49 confirmed dead now, it’s guaranteed we’ll at least know someone who knows someone who was in that mosque. It’s a small country.

4. While they’re not perfect, the police here aren’t as corrupt as those in the USA. They are here to help anyone who feels unsafe, and they will be taking measures to keep Muslims safe especially. Already they’re not letting white people into the mosque in my city.

Please, stay safe everyone, and please read reputable sources before reblogging every little thing you see about this.

Shadow and Bone

My rating: 4.5/5 stars

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo is a lovely book, but it’s also a book I found hard to get into. That, however, was based on personal bias: for some unknown reason, I struggle desperately with books written in first person. Third person for me, thanks.

Despite that writing choice that I don’t quite agree with but pushed through anyway, Shadow and Bone is gorgeously written and planned. The whole concept is wonderfully original and beautifully executed, with twists I’d never expected and that harsh ache of betrayal that rocks even the reader to their bones.

Having already read Six of Crows, I can admit that I was hoping for something similar in Shadow and Bone. I didn’t get something similar, but what I did get was just as good, and I’m happy to have read it.

(Honestly, I’m not entirely sure why I was expecting something more heist-y. Maybe because Leigh Bardugo is so good at heist books?)

I do have to warn, though: if you’re not a fan of huge age gaps (read: over 100 years) this might not be the book for you. While the relationship (spoiler alert!) is in no way healthy, it’s still there.

All in all, I have to commend Leigh Bardugo on her work; on creating such a wonderful, complicated world and then showing us, the reader, it and all its intricacies instead of telling us. The lack of exposition and the compelling narrative really helped me find Alina and her friends and enemies intriguing and worthwhile characters.
