They don't fully believe whumpee, at first.
Sure, they were hurt. Horrifically, even. There's no denying the scars. But the things they describe? There's just no way someone could do such horrific things to a person, and there's no way a person could walk away from that. There must be embellishments, hyperbole, some misremembering.
Then they find the tapes.
Caretaker who lies awake at night, hoping that whumpee is out there, somewhere, and that they know caretaker misses them
Usually, caretaker is the one who rescues whumpee, but I'm such a sucker for the reverse.
Caretaker thinks they know how cruel whumper can be - they've been captured by them after all - until whumpee comes along, and something about caretaker makes this servant or pet or test subject or living weapon brave enough to defy their tormentor and stage a rescue.
And maybe whumpee somehow feels like they need to help caretaker after this, even though caretaker can see just how haunted they are, just how much they're desperately burying their trauma in an attempt to help caretaker recover. To the point that caretaker has to get their poor rescuer to realize they might need deserve rescuing too.
Whumper hiring an assassin to test just how well trained their guard dog really is
It's only after especially long, brutal torture sessions that whumpee receives any modicum of kindness - medical care, a full meal, a warm bath.
Eventually, they start looking forward to them.
Gotta love when a recently escaped whumpee is captured by someone other than whumper, who ends up becoming an accidental caretaker simply because of how poorly whumpee was treated. A cell and 3 square meals a day is better than starving in a torture room.
Whumper needs to go through all their knives to see which ones need to be sharpened.
Luckily, they have whumpee there to test them on. 🤗
One thing I am absolutely a sucker for is a whumpee caught between two (or more) possessive whumpers. That constant state of damned if you do, damned if you don't. Getting punished by whumper 1 and knowing the whole time that they'll have to pay for it again for "letting" someone damage whumper 2's property. Whumpee knowing there's a battle raging for their being and they don't even have a hat in the ring.
When whumpee is finally freed from Whumper, it's not a heroic rescue by friends, but a stunt organized by Whumper's boss. Whumpee has to watch as the one they know approved every torture done to them cries crocodile tears about how "they never could have imagined something so awful happening right under their nose".
Whumpee who knows, logically, that they're safe now, but their instincts still scream about danger at every turn; flinching from kind touches and questioning honest motives. It's frustrating, knowing that even now that they're free, their body still isn't theirs to control.
Underrated scenario in whump is dehumanization from caretaker. Caretaker treating whumpee like a traumatized animal; whether unintentionally, or because they're forced to, or because caretaker actually sees them as such.
Whump prompt/question:
How would whumper react if whumpee started addressing them by their name?
Or (for more defiant whumpees ;)) vice versa, how would they react if Whumpee suddenly started addressing them by an honorific/title (master, ma'am, my liege, whatever's appropriate)?
Cold, calculating, in-control whumpers are great, don't get me wrong, but what I really love is whumpers who. Are. Losing. It.
Whumpers who, for whatever reason, have lost their shit, leaving whumpee to take the brunt of their firey anger. Whumpers who aren't holding back, who could very well accidentally kill whumpee. Whumpers who have someone completely at the mercy of their tantrum.
Oubliettes have such wonderful whump potential and I'd love to see them used more. Just think about it. Whumpee being thrown in to a dark, cold hole in the floor that's too small to even sit down in. Completely alone with their thoughts as people walk above them, never acknowledging the person suffering beneath their feet. As the time goes by, the worry that they will waste away, forgotten, becomes more and more pervasive.
Whumper is hosting a dinner party, and each guest has gotten to pick one way whumpee is "prepared" for it (like not being allowed to sleep for three days before, getting the soles of their feet burned, etc). When the party rolls around, whumpee is forced to stand in front of the guests and not only list the tortures they've endured, but guess which guest did what to them.
Even better, if they "lose" this game by not guessing correctly, the party has another game they get to play at whumpee's expense.
When whumper had said, “You know, I don’t think you appreciate my attention as much as you should”, whumpee had scoffed and rolled their eyes.
But now, after days of being locked in here with no food or water, they whimper and scratch at the door of this room every time they hear whumper’s voice.
“God, you’re so pathetic,” Whumper sneers, “Why are you crying? I haven’t even started your punishment yet.”
“I-I’m sorry. I’m just so upset at myself for- for disappointing you.” Whumpee sobs.
