PIECING IT TOGETHER: A CAPSTONE THESIS JOURNEY OF GROWTH AND REFLECTION
Writing the thesis paper for my New Media Journalism capstone was one of the most meaningful and rewarding parts of this entire journey. All the skills and techniques I learned throughout the program—multimedia storytelling, digital reporting, research, and editing—came together in this comprehensive project. It allowed me to deeply explore a single topic and document its evolution across various media formats including text, photos, videos, and graphics. I truly enjoyed how each chapter in the thesis gave me the opportunity to demonstrate my personal growth, reflect thoughtfully on the mission and methods of multimedia journalism, and create a lasting record of my learning and development in the program.
Putting the paper together was especially satisfying because it showcased both my creativity and newly honed technical skills. This process was not without challenges. At times, the pace of feedback slowed, and waiting for comments on my drafts made me anxious about whether I was progressing correctly. However, Dr. Carsten consistently delivered thoughtful, constructive feedback that made a real difference in the quality of the final product. These insights helped me improve my writing's clarity, precision, and depth while keeping me motivated and confident despite the waiting periods. Such support was invaluable and encouraging throughout.
Looking back, the thesis process was fulfilling beyond just producing a final paper. Integrating video, writing, and research into a single cohesive project made me realize how much I’ve matured as a storyteller and digital journalist. I am proud to complete this program not just with a thesis paper but with concrete proof that I can conceive, develop, and deliver ambitious journalistic work from inception to publication—skills I eagerly plan to utilize personally and professionally as I move forward in my career. This capstone truly encapsulated my journey of growth and mastery in new media journalism.
