SOS 3 > Weekly Diary

The experience of SOS 3 reached its conclusion. The Final Review was intense and full of interesting insights for realizing both projects. The teams discussed the Long Term Strategy for Camerino reconstruction and The project of The School of the Future with the International Guests Critics composed by Eike Roswag-Klinge, Catherine Harrington, Brian Ford and Massimo Imparato as well as the consultants who contributed to the developments of the projects, Michele Bondanelli, Lorenzo Micheli and experts from “Ascolto Attivo”. 

We closed SOS3 experience with handing of the official certificates with Mario Cucinella and the Team.

Today the final activity for SOS 3 is the building site visit to Golinelli Pavillon in Bologna lead by Cecilia Patrizi, project stage director for MCA on this project.

SOS 3 > Weekly Diary

Last week was a decisive week for the students of SOS3.

During the Soft Economy Festival in Treia organized by Symbola, the“Camerino Team”- Alberto, Elena, Ksenyia, Laura, Maria and Martina - with the support of their tutor Roberto presented the Strategy for Camerino Reconstruction. It was an important presentation opportunity with various experts. Following the presentation, there was a discussion board about the replicability of the Camerino strategic approach and experience with: Mario Cucinella, founder of MC Architects and SOS; Alessio Battistella, Arcò and SOS teacher; Marianella Sclavi, sociologist expert on participatory process; Fabio Renzi, president of Symbola and Gianni Squitieri; Deputy Commissioner for Reconstruction.

Meanwhile the School Team worked hard on the project for The School of the Future tutors Andrea and Irene, focusing especially on the environmental issues. They had various opportunities of consulting about the project with Mario Cucinella and the staff of MC Architects

SOS 3 > WEEK DIARY

This was a very intense week for SOS3 students.

The Camerino Team divided themselves between Selinunte (Sicily) and Spoleto (Umbria). Martina and Alberto assisted MCA architects Francesco and Luca Sandri as tutors for the Selinunte summer school which focused on the complexity of historical place which deal with earthquake and disaster events. It was an opportunity to develop this topic in an international context. The guests of the event were other important architecture studio like 5+1 Architects and MVRDV.

 In Spoleto, there was an interactive and itinerant workshop with various panel discussion, organized by the responsible of the reconstruction for Italy, focused on the rebuilding of places of the center of Italy destroyed by the earthquake. For the students of the Camerino Team, this was an important moment to understand the state of the art for this topic in the larger Italian context.

The School Team was involved in the development of the “school of the future”. They worked on simulations with the help of their tutors and had the opportunity to consult with Tommaso Bitossi from Transsolar. Yesterday was also an opportunity for them to have a consultation with Eng. Maurizio Milan about the seismic design of the school of the future. 

Tommaso Bitossi is an Italian architect who works from Transsolar, an international climate climate engineering firm determined to create exceptional, highly comfortable indoor and outdoor spaces with a positive environmental impact 

Maurizio Milan is an Italian engineer. He works in collaboration with world-famous architects such as Von Gerkan, Marg und Partner, Arata Isozaki, Rem Koolhaas, Herzog & de Meuron, Michele De Lucchi, Matteo Thun, Bolles+Wilson and Mario Cucinella. A long-time consultant of Renzo Piano, he has taken part in numerous projects RPBW

SOS 3 > Where We Will Be

On the 6th of June SOS and MCA will be in Treia at the Soft Economy Festival, organized by Symbola. During the event  “rigenerazione territoriale e ricostruzione” (territorial regeneration and reconstruction) at the Municipal Theatre, the students of the Camerino team will present the strategic plan for Camerino Reconstruction. It will be an opportunity to discuss with influential and important people.

SOS 3 > Weekly Diary

The work of the two SOS3 team projects are advancing.

The School of the Future team worked on environmental simulations with the support of their tutors Irene and Andrea.

In the next days, Tommaso Bitossi from Transsolar will be visiting as external expert for review.

On the 6th of June at Opificio Golinelli in Bologna SOS hosted SOS open #7 a lecture open to the community and professionals. The guest lecturer was Professor Paolo Tombesi, who joined the University of Melbourne in 1997 and appointed to the Chair in Construction in 2009. He has held visiting positions at the University of Reading (United Kingdom), Harvard University, University of Yale and University of Minnesota (United States), and the Ecole Polytechnique Federale in Lausanne - EPFL (Switzerland). Paolo Tombesi discussed the impact of architecture on building processes.

Last week  the SOS- School group Andrea, Claudia, Laura B., Laura M. and Ugo participated in the Lyon Architecture Biennale. SOS students in collaboration with MIUR Social – The Italian Ministry of Education of the University and Research - organized a workshop titled "WISE - Workshop for Innovative School and Education". The aim is to focus on the importance of architecture in the educational context.

In the past days SOS _ Camerino Team, Alberto, Elena, Laura Z., Kseniya, Maria e Martina,  were involved in a three days’ workshop, focused on the design of a Temporary Shelter for Camerino Community in collaboration with Arcò Architecture and Cooperation professionals –  Arch. Alessio Battistella e Arch. Luca Trabattoni  - . The aim was to develop a concept design for a prototype structure for a temporary retail area in the dedicated area of S. Paolo, addressing the need for low-cost, self-built structures for the temporary use in the earthquake area. The design is tested in Camerino, with locally sourced and built, demountable, self-constructed structures.

S.O.S. School of Sustainability

S.O.S. ‐ School of Sustainability is the initiative of the architect Mario Cucinella focused on training new professionals in the field of sustainability, capable of meeting the challenges of the future and leading processes of transformation.

S.O.S ‐ School of Sustainability is a post graduate and private school based in Bologna (inside MC Architects Studio), open to creative young people and researchers, professionals and companies to develop innovative projects with a positive impact on society, the economy and the environment through research and experimentation.

The Third edtion of SOS has been very active in the past weeks. The students Alberto, Andrea, Claudia, Elena, Laura B., Laura M., Laura Z., Maria and Martina, are working on their team projects - The Reconstruction and Long-term Strategy for Camerino, Marche and The School of the Future - led by their tutors Alessio Batistella (ARCo), Andrea Rossi, Irene Giglio e Roberto Corbia. 

SOS Third _ Latest Activities Resume , Education, Research and Practice:     

At the end of April, the students had the opportunity to see some of the post-earthquake reconstruction sites together with MCA project coordinator Marco Dell’Agli.  They visited the Social Health Center in San Felice sul Panaro, the Dance School of Reggiolo and to the Nursery School in Guastalla.

During the “Quality Shelter" workshop in May, they participated in the design process for the refurbishment of Tambakunda’s Hospital in Senegal working closely with MCA’s architects and external consultants including architects Michele Olivieri and Giulio Desiderio, arch. Marco Rizzoli (expert in hospital design), arch. Alessio Battistella (from Arcò) and arch. Tommaso Bitossi (environmental and MEP consultant from Transsolar, Germany).

Last week, the students visited Renzo Piano Building Workshop Foundation in Genoa, guided by architects Mark Carroll and Emanuele Donadel.

The scholarships are available to all the students who have submitted their application to SOS courses.

They will be awarded according to merit ranking following the evaluation of the profiles.

SOS - School of Sustainability - based in Bologna, Italy, is an initiative of Mario Cucinella focused on training emerging professionals in the field of sustainability. SOS is a creative laboratory born in close collaboration with Mario Cucinella Architects (MCA) and the non-profit organization Building Green Futures (BGF), where training is inspired by the active projects and expertise in a professional practice setting.

Beginning in October 2016, SOS will launch a Consortium for Practice and Research which is comprised of a wide range of firms / practices (architecture, development, engineering, landscape, urban, etc.) governments, industry partners and organisations throughout Italy and Europe. The Consortium serves a critical function in the SOS mission, which is to be a nexus and platform for the exchange of advanced professional practice knowledge and experience with a particular focus on sustainability.

SOS OPEN#6 - Local identity – exploring a forgotten resource for sustainable buildings and cities in connection to our actual Biennale installation in Venice.

The next appointment with SOS OPEN is planned for 29th June 2016, at SOS school, Via Francesco Flora 6, from 7 pm to 9 pm.

The conference will be held by Matthias Schuler, founder at Transsolar, now a leading provider of consulting services on developing sustainable design strategies for buildings. In addition to this, he regularly teaches at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, and he has also taught at the University of Stuttgart and University of Limerick.

Schuler lesson will focus on his latest projects at Transsolar, including their recent installation at Venice Biennale.

A great success for the event SOS OPEN#3  - Rethinking the suburbs, held on 15th March 2016 at Fondazione Golinelli.

G124 Team, Mario Cucinella and Matteo Lepore debated about the experiences of G124 Team in Roma, Torino and Catania Suburbs and they have summarized the successes and the failures of interventions in each town.

Moreover they talked about the actions that public authorities and local actors should implement so that the initiated projects can be independent and evolve in the right way.

Now we are looking forward to present  you the next event of SOS OPEN#4 POST CARBON ARCHITECURE, bridging the performance gap, with Peter Clegg!

Peter Clegg is co-founder at Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, established in 1978.

The lecture regards Post Carbon Architecture, will focus on design and building of high performance buildings.
