The generation of few challenges
We live in a privileged time. Running water, heat, A/C, electricity, technology, spellcheck, GPS, roofs over our heads, education, grocery stores, Starbucks. Outside of the daily struggles of getting and keeping a job, dealing with racism, hate, and the trump administration everyday, we have a lot to be thankful for.
We each wake up, we scroll through our phones Instagram feeds, and we see what everyone else is doing. We see celebrities working out and getting their makeup done on set, we see blue check marks verifying who is legitimately more important than their peers. And we see “inspirational” messages of “new week, new goals!” and “never miss a monday workout”.
I cannot help but read these and shake my head. Look at how far we have come. Mankind has struggled, fought. Was defeated, and yet flourished. Now we don’t live in that world. We live in our heads. We don’t push limits, we type 140 characters. We live in a Sims like world where it’s normal for a woman to got to the gym, lay on a mat to take some sexy gym selfies, post them, and then grab taco bell on the way home. No one is paying attention. To themselves, to their friends...to no one.
We need fitness because people sit at desks all day. Gone are the days of community living, where they would team up to survive by planting crops, building houses, and building establishments. It is now a luxury to have the time to explore this great, beautiful planet we live on. We now have to earn our time back by working for someone else in order to even plan time away to ourselves. Yes, work is not a new concept. Everyone has worked. But the job has changed.
We don’t challenge ourselves anymore. True success is a rarity. You used to have people working their butts off in open calls and auditions and now if you get enough YouTube followers, or if you say something ridiculous like ‘Cash Me Outside’ you become an internet sensation where millions of people want to know what you are doing at any given time.
RIP to ‘BRB’. We no longer take time to ourselves. I can’t remember the last time I typed ‘BRB’. It’s moot. No one leaves. You are constantly able to be contacted.
How can we bring back the simplicity? We shouldn’t have to wait for the apocalypse to happen in order to bring ourselves back to our roots. Nurturing ourselves, those around us and the world is what we were put here to do. When will we stop filling up our ‘Insta lives’ and start filling our real ones?
If the internet was to go down and crash. What would you do with your time? Who would you spend that time with? Go do that. Get to know your real self again.

Now I can talk to more girls and tell them that any skin color, any economic background, any shape they were born into is perfect and right and strong and beautiful and enough because I’m sitting here, not the stereotype.
