     She had been stepping out for a moment for cooler air and a moment for someone not to be clamoring for her attention when they nearly collided. He was the last person she had expected to run into. She had seen him always around the edges of the crowd, or caught a glimpse of him retreating further into the shadows. Yet surprising as it was, she found herself not at all minding. It was almost a refreshing change of pace, considering she had been caught in this very spot before by some far more unpleasant and unwanted.

     Any other man wouldn’t have hesitated at the chance, yet there is conflict within him, she reads it clearly as he looks from her to the spot of winter greenery that hangs above them, then back to her. She is just about to speak, offer him an out should he wish it, not expecting him to hold traditions that were not his to begin with. Though he acts and so the words die on her lips.

     The warmth of his hand is felt more than the touch itself, his touch more cautious than certain. The kiss is a bit stiffer than others she has received, yet simple and didn’t dance along the line of too much. It was nice, is what she would say should anyone ask her about it later.

     His words make her laugh, bright and joyful, it’s own kind of music. “Merry Christmas.” She paused, glancing back at the soiree, still very much in full swing. “I was planning on stepping out into the garden for a moment for a bit of fresh air, and wouldn’t mind the company, if you would like to join?”
