      She arched an auburn brow. “I said it was, didn't I? Come on, you really think I would lie to you?” Her head tilted slightly as she gave a dazzling smile. “What good would that do me?”

leon watched as reality came back to her and she moved faster than he'd ever seen her , hands grabbing his shirt and pulling him in , the door making that creaking sound as it was closed shut . her arms immediately looping around him in a familiar way that almost felt foreign , how long had it been since the last time they had stood in the same room ? how long had it been since he was able to take in her scent , feel the warmth of her touch , or even the way her heart beat against his ?

he swallowed thickly as his head slowly lowered , his stumble caressing her cheek and his mouth pressed against her shoulder . the robe she wore made him realize she was about to go to bed and a wave of regret washed over him , perhaps he should have waited to return . come during the day when she wasn't home and just waited for her . but what was the point in waiting when all he wanted was to see her again .

i missed you , the words broke his heart but not in the way that was sad but that painful kind that was him not wanting to hurt her . regardless of the outcome he did anyway . at least now , he was here to make it up . his arms wrapped around her and he pulled her tight , his palms pressing against her as he relished the warmth of her so close to him again .

why didn't you call and tell me you were on your way home ? leon pulled away just enough to look down at her expression , their eyes meeting and he immediately softened , his head shaking as he reached up and touched her cheek . “ everything happened so fast , i just ⸻ i just wanted to come home . ”  leon knew it was a poor excuse but it was not the first time he had randomly showed up after a mission . however this one felt different , it felt final . “ i'm sorry if i woke you . ”

    I just wanted to come home. Her cheeks had started to hurt from her smiling, and her heart all but melted hearing him say so. How empty the house had felt without him, surrounded by all the reminders that he once had been there. Despite the fact she knew the worst was certainly possible, perhaps more so than it ever had been in the past, she hadn’t ever lost hope that Leon would come back home to her. Not that it had always been easy, especially as time had gone on. “Oh none of it matters now. What does is that you’re home." How light she felt, like a great weight had been lifted from her chest, the weight of worry that had become heavier with every passing day.

    “Don’t worry, you didn’t,” she said softly as she leaned into his touch. And even if he had, she wouldn’t have been upset. How could she? Though he had always been the sort who worried over her in that way. Even though he was her husband and really could do very little when it came to inconveniencing her. 

    Her hands ran over him, cupping his face, moving down his neck to his chest. There were things she noticed about him now that some of the surprise had worn off. He stood a little straighter, did not seem to hide any sort of grimace as he moved and she touched him. Of course she had a thousand questions, but they all could wait. The fact he was even here meant he had been somewhat successful, surely. 

    It was then she pulled him close, kissing him deeply, pouring everything into it. All the worry she had felt, how fiercely she had missed him, the relief he was home. Time slowed and still as she allowed herself to become lost in him. 

   Finally, when the need for air made her lungs burn, the kiss broke. “I was just headed to bed.” A small clever smile lifted the edges of her lips. “Care to join me?” Her hand found one of his as she took a step back, leading him further into the house. There was no doubt that he was tired, she could see in his expression, the sag in his shoulders, still she no longer had any intention of going to bed just yet.
